Short answer: A Linode Nanode is a Shared CPU instance, not a separate alternative to Shared CPU. Its low price can make it worth testing for a single pre-encoded, low-bitrate loop, but the 1 TB transfer allowance may be the bigger constraint than CPU. Consider Dedicated CPU if you need predictable compute or plan to transcode continuously; neither plan label guarantees an uninterrupted stream.
Nanode is a Shared CPU plan
Akamai Cloud, whose service was previously Linode-branded, lists the Nanode 1 GB as a Shared CPU instance. Its listed resources and price are:
| Plan | vCPU | RAM | Storage | Transfer | Listed price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nanode 1 GB | 1 | 1 GB | 25 GB | 1 TB | US$5/month |
Those are Akamai’s listed Nanode specifications and price as accessed in 2026. The broader Shared CPU catalog spans 1–32 vCPUs, 1–192 GB RAM, 25–3,840 GB storage and 1–20 TB transfer; those ranges describe the catalog, not the Nanode specifically. See Akamai’s Shared CPU plans.
So the practical comparison is Nanode (one low-cost Shared CPU configuration) versus other Shared CPU sizes or Dedicated CPU—not Nanode versus Shared CPU as distinct categories.

Which CPU type suits a 24/7 loop?
| Decision factor | Nanode / Shared CPU | Dedicated CPU | What it means for a loop stream |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPU consistency | CPU cores are shared and can face contention. Akamai says short bursts to 100% are fine, while sustained usage should average below 80%. | Dedicated cores are positioned for competition-free, predictable compute. | Favor Dedicated CPU if encoding load is sustained or predictable CPU performance is important. This is guidance, not a guarantee of stream continuity. |
| Workload | May be a reasonable trial for modest, variable compute. | Akamai names media transcoding among Dedicated CPU use cases. | Pushing an already-encoded file without expensive transformations may be a better Shared CPU trial than repeatedly encoding or resizing video. Actual demand depends on the file and settings. |
| Transfer | Nanode lists 1 TB; transfer is pooled across instances, and overage may apply. | Allowance depends on the specific plan and generation. | Calculate outgoing data separately from CPU usage. A high-bitrate stream can exceed the Nanode allowance even if CPU remains comfortable. |
| Price reference | Nanode 1 GB is listed at US$5/month. | Akamai’s pricing page shows a G8 2-vCPU Dedicated Compute plan at US$45/month. | The displayed Dedicated plan is a reference point, not necessarily the minimum suitable plan. Compare transfer and resources as well as sticker price. |
| Region | Choose a data center with viewer geography in mind. | Same consideration. | A Linode staff response recommended selecting a data center based on viewer location, but does not promise a particular network result. |
Akamai’s Shared CPU guidance is to average below 80% sustained CPU use; brief bursts to 100% are acceptable. The same provider positions Dedicated CPU for consistent performance and identifies media transcoding as a use case. These points make a pre-encoded relay a plausible Shared CPU test, not a proven fit for every loop. The sources do not benchmark this exact continuous-stream workload. Current plan details and overage terms are on Akamai’s pricing page.
Check bandwidth before choosing the instance
A 24/7 stream sends data continuously. For a rough monthly estimate, multiply the configured bitrate by hours online, convert bits to bytes, and allow extra for protocol overhead. At 1 Mbps for 30 days, the result is about 324 GB decimal before overhead; at 4 Mbps, it is roughly 1.30 TB before overhead. These are arithmetic planning estimates, not provider benchmarks.

At 4 Mbps, one continuously pushed stream therefore exceeds the Nanode’s listed 1 TB transfer allowance for a 30-day month, unless pooled allowance from other instances covers the difference. Akamai’s current pricing page lists egress overage at US$0.005/GB, says transfer is pooled across instances, and says inbound traffic is free. Verify current billing details for your region and account; older community posts quote a different historical overage rate and should not be treated as current pricing.
Bitrate depends on the resolution, frame rate and codec. YouTube’s guidance accessed in 2026 recommends H.264 at 4 Mbps for 480p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30; do not confuse the 1080p30 recommendation with the 480p30 figure. YouTube’s live table covers other combinations. It also recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and RTMP or RTMPS ingest; RTMPS encrypts delivery to Google. Supported video codecs listed by YouTube include H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, with AAC or MP3 audio. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings for the exact resolution and frame rate you will use.

Test the real stream before committing
Do not infer reliability from a plan name or a short CPU snapshot. Test with the actual file and encoder settings, including audio and motion similar to the intended loop. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health and review messages.
- Validate the content. Confirm that you have the rights needed to stream the video, music and other included material. A technically healthy stream does not establish that content complies with YouTube rules.
- Set the encoder deliberately. Use YouTube’s current codec and bitrate guidance for your target resolution and frame rate; use CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS if your encoder supports it.
- Measure sustained resource use. Observe CPU, memory and outgoing transfer while the real stream runs. For Shared CPU, compare sustained CPU use with Akamai’s under-80% average guidance.
- Watch the platform and host. Monitor YouTube stream health and review messages, along with process failures and transfer consumption. Set alerts where your hosting tools allow them.
- Adjust based on evidence. Reduce unnecessary encoding work or bitrate if the stream and quality goals permit. Resize or move to Dedicated CPU if sustained CPU pressure appears; investigate transfer costs separately.
Policy and operational considerations
Linode’s Acceptable Use Policy prohibits using a shared system in a way that unnecessarily interferes with normal operation or consumes a disproportionate share of system resources. The policy does not establish that an ordinary authorized YouTube loop is prohibited. Keep the workload within provider guidance and review the Linode Acceptable Use Policy and applicable service terms.

Choose a data center with your intended audience in mind, but treat location as a network-path consideration rather than a promise of performance. YouTube stream health and viewer experience still need to be checked under your actual conditions.

Compare total cost, not just the Nanode’s listed US$5/month: account for transfer above the included pool, any other instances sharing that pool, and the plan you would need if transcoding pushes CPU use too high. Akamai’s pricing page lists US$0.005/GB for egress overage, but region and account billing details should be checked before estimating a recurring bill. Dedicated CPU prices vary; the G8 2-vCPU plan shown at US$45/month is one listed reference, not a like-for-like guaranteed replacement.
