The right alternative depends on which part of Cloudflare’s data platform you need to replace. Cloudflare describes a flow from Pipelines for event ingestion, to R2 storage in Apache Iceberg tables, to R2 SQL or compatible query engines. A warehouse, an Iceberg query engine, a streaming system, and an application database solve different problems, so compare them at the same architectural layer before choosing.
What Cloudflare’s Data Platform includes
Cloudflare presents its Data Platform as a lakehouse-oriented workflow rather than a single database. Its components handle different stages: event delivery and processing, table storage, and querying. That distinction matters when assessing alternatives: replacing one component may leave the rest of the workflow intact, while replacing the whole flow means selecting and operating equivalents for each stage.
| Layer | Cloudflare component | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Ingestion and processing | Pipelines | Accepts and processes events; Cloudflare describes filtering, enriching, and validating data at ingestion. |
| Storage and table format | R2 with Apache Iceberg tables | Stores data in Iceberg tables. R2 Data Catalog exposes tables through an Iceberg REST API. |
| Query | R2 SQL or compatible engines | R2 SQL is Cloudflare’s query option. Cloudflare names Spark, Snowflake, Trino, and DuckDB as engines that can access tables through the catalog API. |
Iceberg compatibility provides an interoperability path; it does not show that compatible engines have equivalent features, performance, or total cost. Cloudflare also states that “R2 never charges for egress.” That claim applies to R2 egress charges, not to query compute, requests, other services, or the cost of operating a complete workload.
Which alternatives fit each part of the workflow?
These candidates occupy different layers, so the useful comparison is about fit rather than a single winner. The table describes roles at a high level; it is not a feature, performance, or price ranking.

| Candidate or category | Best considered as | What to verify for your workload |
|---|---|---|
| Snowflake | A warehouse option; Cloudflare also names it as an engine that can access R2 Data Catalog Iceberg tables. | Whether the integration supports your required workflows, and how its compute, storage, operations, and service terms compare for your workload. |
| Apache Spark, Trino, or DuckDB | Query-engine options Cloudflare names for access to Iceberg tables through R2 Data Catalog. | Whether the engine’s deployment and operating model suit your latency, concurrency, governance, and support needs. Compatibility alone does not settle those questions. |
| BigQuery or ClickHouse | Warehouse or analytics-database candidates to assess when you want an analytical destination or query system. | Ingestion paths, storage and table-format needs, query characteristics, regional availability, pricing, and service terms. Cloudflare’s mentions of these products relate to particular internal analytical roles, not a general recommendation. |
| Kafka | A real-time event-streaming layer, potentially alongside a separate storage and query system. | How events are retained and delivered, what transforms them, and which downstream system serves analytics. A stream layer alone is not a full lakehouse replacement. |
| D1 | A relational database for application data, not a direct substitute for the Data Platform lakehouse. | Whether a small relational database fits the application workload; Cloudflare documents a 10 GB per-database limit and single-threaded execution. |
Cloudflare names these tools in specific contexts, but that is not independent evidence that they are interchangeable or suitable for every external workload. For a fully managed warehouse or analytics database, compare the complete service against the complete service. For an open-table-format design, compare storage, catalog, and query-engine combinations. For event transport, compare streaming layers separately from analytics storage.
Choose by the job you need done
For event collection and analytics as one workflow
Start by mapping the path from event source to usable report: ingestion, validation or enrichment, retention, table management, querying, and any dashboard or downstream consumer. Cloudflare’s documented flow covers ingestion through querying, but a compatible engine is not automatically a finished analytics experience. If you are seeking a ready-made web analytics product, first determine whether you need product dashboards and reporting or a data pipeline for your own analysis; those are different requirements.

For an existing Iceberg lake
If the priority is to query Iceberg data with another engine, investigate the catalog and table integration before considering a full platform migration. Cloudflare names Spark, Snowflake, Trino, and DuckDB for access through R2 Data Catalog’s Iceberg REST API. Confirm that the specific engine and version support the operations, authentication, table maintenance, and workload patterns you require; the compatibility statement alone does not establish those details.
For real-time signals
If the key requirement is moving events continuously between producers and consumers, evaluate an event-streaming layer such as Kafka as one part of the architecture. You will still need to decide where durable analytical tables live, how transformations and retention work, and what system answers analytical queries.

For application records
If the data serves an application’s transactional reads and writes, assess a relational database on those terms. D1 may be relevant to Cloudflare-based application storage, but its documented per-database cap and single-threaded execution make it a poor stand-in for a large analytical lakehouse.
Compare the workload, not just product names
Before shortlisting services, write down the workload the platform must handle. These criteria expose trade-offs that a feature checklist or compatibility label can hide.

- Storage and format: Record retention needs, table format requirements, catalog behavior, and whether existing tools must read the data.
- Queries: Separate operational lookups from exploratory analysis, BI, batch jobs, and low-latency queries. Specify expected concurrency and acceptable latency.
- Operations: Decide who owns pipelines, compaction, catalog configuration, compute, observability, and incident response.
- Economics: Model storage, ingestion, scanned bytes or compute, requests, egress, and minimum charges at expected usage—not just a headline storage rate.
- Portability and constraints: Check required cloud and region, security and governance controls, support expectations, and existing cloud commitments.
No universal alternative follows from the available product descriptions. A workload with occasional exploratory queries can favor different choices from one with strict latency, high concurrency, or substantial continuous ingestion. Geography, service tier, and operating capacity can also change the result.

| Charge area | Cloudflare-published terms | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| R2 SQL data scanned | 10 GB per month included, then $0.0025 per additional GB scanned; 10 MB minimum scan per query. | Cloudflare R2 SQL pricing, last updated August 7, 2026. |
| R2 Data Catalog operations | 1 million catalog operations per month included, then $9 per million. | Cloudflare R2 Data Catalog pricing, last updated August 7, 2026. |
| Compaction data | 10 GB per month included, then $0.005 per GB. | Cloudflare R2 Data Catalog pricing, last updated August 7, 2026. |
| Objects processed | 1 million objects processed per month included, then $2 per million. | Cloudflare R2 Data Catalog pricing, last updated August 7, 2026. |
| R2 storage | $0.015 per GB-month in a Cloudflare pricing example. | This is the example’s rate, not a universal or independently verified current storage quote; verify applicable R2 terms. |
These are distinct usage dimensions. Estimate scanned data and catalog activity from the query pattern, include compaction and object processing where applicable, and add ordinary storage and operations. Do not treat the R2 egress statement as proof that the overall workload has no transfer, compute, or third-party costs.
D1 has separate, plan-specific metrics
D1’s pricing figures apply to its own plans, not to Cloudflare’s Data Platform allowances. Cloudflare’s D1 pricing documentation, last updated April 21, 2026, lists 5 million rows read per day and 100,000 rows written per day on Workers Free. For Workers Paid, it lists 25 billion rows read per month and 50 million rows written per month included before stated overage pricing. These plan-specific row counts do not make D1 an equivalent analytical lakehouse.
A practical evaluation sequence
- Define the target: Decide whether you are replacing event ingestion, Iceberg storage and catalog, the query layer, or the complete workflow.
- Write a workload profile: Specify event rate, data volume, retention, transformations, query mix, concurrency, latency, geography, and support requirements.
- Shortlist at the same layer: Compare warehouse with warehouse, query engine with query engine, and streaming system with streaming system. Document any multi-product architecture explicitly.
- Validate the integration: For Iceberg, check the needed catalog operations and table lifecycle. For ingestion, check required sources and transformations. For queries, check workload and concurrency fit.
- Estimate total usage cost: Apply published billing dimensions to a realistic month of storage, scans or compute, catalog activity, object handling, requests, and transfers.
- Assess operations and guarantees: Assign ownership for maintenance and incidents, then verify service terms, regional support, and security or governance requirements with current vendor documentation.
- Test against representative data: Use your own event shape and query mix to check correctness, latency, operational effort, and actual billing behavior before committing.
This process avoids treating an open format or a vendor’s named integration as a guarantee of equivalent results. The best candidate is the one that meets the stated workload and operational constraints at an acceptable measured cost.
