First find where the picture goes black: in OBS’s preview, in YouTube’s live output, or only in the archived stream. Those are different failure points, and “24/7” by itself does not identify the cause. Compare OBS’s picture with YouTube’s live dashboard and a local recording before changing settings; then follow the branch that matches what you see.
How to fix a black screen on a 24/7 YouTube lofi stream in OBS: locate the failure
Before changing a source or encoder setting, note when the black screen begins and which output shows it. YouTube’s guidance recommends checking the encoder’s picture and sound, dashboard errors and CPU load, and a local archive. If the encoder output is healthy, investigate the connection to YouTube. See YouTube’s live-streaming troubleshooting guidance.
- OBS preview is black: Start with the scene’s source type and whether that source is rendering correctly in OBS.
- OBS looks right, but YouTube’s live output is black: Check OBS’s output, YouTube’s live dashboard and encoder messages, and the outbound connection.
- Live output looked right, but the archive is black: Compare the local recording with the archived stream and note whether the fault began during the live session or appeared only in the archive.
Also record your operating system and version, OBS version, graphics hardware, and whether the stream key or scene changed around the time the problem started. These details determine which capture instructions apply.
If the OBS preview or a source is black
Identify the source before changing capture settings
In the affected scene, check whether the lofi picture comes from Display Capture, Window Capture, Game Capture, Media Source, or Browser Source. The fix depends on that choice. OBS’s Game Capture troubleshooting guide applies to Game Capture, not automatically to a video or animation played through Media Source or Browser Source.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Media Source: Confirm the intended media file is selected and the source is visible in the scene. If the scene uses a looping video, verify that this is the source showing black rather than another layer covering it.
- Browser Source: Check that the intended page or content is loaded and that the source is visible. Do not apply game-hook fixes unless the scene actually uses Game Capture.
- Display Capture or Window Capture: Check that OBS is capturing the intended display or window and that the source remains visible and enabled in the scene.
- Game Capture: Use OBS’s Game Capture guidance. OBS notes that Game Capture targets games, and some games may need Window Capture instead.
If the source appears black only after the stream has run for some time, note the timing and inspect the same source locally. The available guidance does not establish that long duration itself causes a black screen.
Check laptop graphics selection and versions
On laptops with more than one GPU, graphics assignment can affect capture. OBS’s Laptop Troubleshooting page says its newer Display Capture method requires OBS 27 or later and Windows 10 version 1903 or later. It also recommends checking that OBS and Windows are current, using the high-power GPU in the circumstances described there, and trying the Windows 10 capture method manually if automatic selection is not working. The page dates to 2021, so verify the steps for your actual Windows and OBS releases rather than treating its clicks as universal current instructions.

If YouTube is black but OBS looks right
Compare OBS’s own preview and output with YouTube’s live preview. Then check YouTube Live Control Room for encoder errors and CPU load, and review a local archive. YouTube distinguishes encoder picture or sound problems, viewer-reported errors, and outbound connection trouble; a black YouTube view is not by itself proof of a capture-source problem.
- Confirm OBS is sending the expected scene and audio, rather than merely showing it in the preview.
- Inspect YouTube’s live dashboard for an encoder error or other reported issue.
- Compare a local recording with the YouTube output to see whether the fault is already present before delivery.
- If OBS output and the local recording are healthy but delivery is not, test the outbound internet connection; contact your ISP if the test identifies a connection problem.
If YouTube specifically reports that a third-party encoder cannot start, its troubleshooting instructions say to get a new stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. That addresses an encoder-start failure; it is not a general remedy for a stream that is already running with a black scene.

If OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects
Dropped frames and disconnections point to a connection branch, not necessarily a black capture source. OBS Project says, “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” Its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guidance explains that dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain; too many dropped frames can lead to disconnection.
- Check whether your upload connection can sustain the bitrate set in OBS, including during the hours the stream tends to fail.
- Try a lower bitrate and observe whether dropped frames stop. This can reduce image quality, so treat it as a diagnostic and balance it against the quality you need.
- Check firewall or security software, VPNs, network-optimization software, and network drivers for possible interference.
- Use a wired connection when possible to avoid relying on a variable wireless link.
- Consider OBS’s Dynamic Bitrate option as a fallback when congestion occurs. It can reduce dropped frames by lowering bitrate, but it does not fix the underlying network cause and can lower quality.
For the detailed checks and current OBS-specific advice, follow the OBS connection guide rather than assuming every black screen is a network failure.

The built-in cable features 26AWG (2C) + 30AWG (1P) tinned copper conductors, ensuring excellent conductivity and corrosion resistance, enhancing durability, and reducing signal loss
If OBS reports encoding overload or the output is choppy
Encoding overload or choppy output is a performance problem, distinct from a capture-source mismatch and from network dropped frames. OBS identifies GPU load, output resolution and frame rate, scene complexity, and demanding media or browser sources as factors that can affect rendering and encoding performance. See OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting.
- Check GPU use while OBS is streaming and look for competing workloads.
- Simplify the scene by disabling sources that are not needed for the lofi stream.
- If the system cannot keep up, reduce output resolution or frame rate and check whether performance improves.
- Review large or numerous media and browser sources, which can use system resources.
These are performance investigations, not proof that scene complexity causes a particular 24/7 stream’s black screen. Compare the result after each change so you can identify which factor matters on your system.
