YouTube automatically archives eligible 2160p streams, but it does not guarantee that every replay will offer a selectable 2160p60 version. Record a local backup in case the archive is missing or has lower quality.
What determines whether a replay is 4K60?
There are two separate stages: your encoder sends a live feed to YouTube, and YouTube processes that feed into playback formats for the archived video. Setting an encoder to 2160p60 does not create detail or frames absent from the source, nor does it guarantee that the replay will expose a 2160p60 option. YouTube says it transcodes live input into multiple formats; check the archive itself after it is available. YouTube’s encoder settings and transcoding guidance
Automatic archiving has a key duration limit. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and specifically includes 1440p and 2160p (4K) streams. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the archive matters, plan to end the broadcast before reaching 12 hours. YouTube’s live archive guidance
Configure a 2160p60 encoder feed
YouTube’s current English encoder settings page, accessed October 4, 2026, lists the following guidance for 4K / 2160p at 60 fps. The bitrate recommendations differ by codec; they are ingest settings, not guarantees about the replay’s available quality levels. YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

| Codec | YouTube’s 2160p60 bitrate guidance | What to use it for |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 35 Mbps recommended | Use this recommended setting if your encoder sends H.264 and your upload connection can sustain it. |
| AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps minimum; 40 Mbps maximum | Choose a bitrate within the published range that your encoder and sustained upload capacity support. |
For the other relevant settings, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS ingest, and its guidance supports frame rates up to 60 fps. Encoder settings are automatically detected by default. At 2160p input, low-latency optimization is unavailable, so the stream uses normal latency. YouTube’s encoder settings and latency guidance
Check the source and network before the event
- Make sure the actual video source has 4K detail and 60 fps if you expect those characteristics in the stream. An output setting cannot restore detail or motion information that was never in the source.
- Confirm the encoder is sending 2160p at 60 fps, not merely recording or displaying the source at that resolution.
- Ensure your upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate throughout the broadcast. Test ahead of time, then watch the Live Control Room preview and stream-health notices while streaming. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring live streams
- Test with moving video and audio so the preview reflects the kind of content you plan to broadcast.
Before, during, and after the stream
Before going live
- In your encoder, choose an output resolution of 2160p and a frame rate of 60 fps. Select a codec supported by your encoder and use the corresponding bitrate guidance above.
- Set bitrate encoding to CBR and the keyframe interval to 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Connect to YouTube using RTMPS if your encoder offers it, and check the stream preview and health notices in Live Control Room before the event.
- Start a local recording and confirm that the file is being written and growing. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. YouTube’s live-stream tips for local archives
- Schedule the stream to finish in less than 12 hours if you need YouTube’s automatic archive.
After ending the broadcast
- End the stream normally, then look for its archived video under YouTube Studio’s Live content.
- When the video is available, open its playback quality menu and check whether 2160p and 60 fps are offered. YouTube’s cited help pages give no fixed processing-time estimate and do not promise a 4K60 playback option for every archive.
- If no archive appears, check whether the stream exceeded 12 hours and locate your local recording. YouTube warns that streams over that duration may not be captured.
Does DVR affect the replay?
No. DVR controls whether viewers can pause or rewind during the live broadcast; it does not determine the replay’s resolution or whether an archive exists. YouTube says a recording remains viewable once available even if DVR is off. Rewind through DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Troubleshooting a replay that is not 4K60
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The replay has no 2160p option. | Check whether the encoder actually sent 2160p, whether the source was 4K, and whether the stream health and preview showed the expected feed. | Allow the video to become available, then check the quality menu again. The cited YouTube pages do not specify a processing wait or guarantee a 2160p rendition. Keep the local recording as a fallback. |
| The replay is below 60 fps. | Check the encoder’s output frame rate and the source frame rate; an output setting cannot add frames missing from the source. | Correct the feed settings for a future broadcast and verify the live preview before the event. |
| The automatic archive is missing. | Check the stream duration. YouTube says streams over 12 hours may not be captured. | Use the local recording if it was successfully written. Keep future broadcasts under 12 hours when an automatic archive is essential. |
| The stream health is unstable at the selected bitrate. | Check whether the upload connection can sustain the chosen codec’s bitrate continuously. | Test the connection and encoder ahead of the next event, then select a reliable bitrate within YouTube’s published guidance for that codec. |
Do you need a dedicated encoder?
Only consider dedicated hardware if your existing device cannot send a 2160p60 feed. YouTube’s verified encoder list includes the Blackmagic Web Presenter 4K as a hardware streaming solution capable of streaming up to 2160p60 directly to YouTube; it is not required for every creator and cannot control YouTube’s later processing.
