Run FFmpeg as a boot-enabled systemd service, with Restart=on-failure and a short RestartSec= delay. Boot enablement starts the service after a server reboot; the restart policy handles eligible FFmpeg exits. Neither can prevent a playback gap while the server reboots or fix a broken command, stream key, network connection, or YouTube ingest configuration.
What to configure—and what it can recover from
A terminal session is not a reliable way to keep FFmpeg running unattended: it does not arrange for the process to start after a host reboot. Use systemd to supervise FFmpeg and enable the service at boot.
| Mechanism | What it handles | What it does not handle |
|---|---|---|
| Boot enablement | Starts the service when the server boots. | Does not restart FFmpeg merely because the process exits while the host stays up. |
Restart=on-failure |
Asks systemd to restart the service after an eligible unsuccessful exit. | Does not restart a service stopped intentionally with systemctl stop; attempts are subject to systemd start-rate limits. |
If an update causes Ubuntu to reboot, systemd can start the service again afterward. A reboot still terminates the current FFmpeg process, so viewers may see an interruption. Recovery depends on the input being available, the command and credentials being valid, network connectivity, and YouTube accepting the ingest connection. Automatic restarting is recovery, not uninterrupted playback.
Before creating the service
Capture the working command and protect the key
Record the exact FFmpeg invocation that currently works: input, codecs, output settings, and YouTube ingest address. Do not publish or expose the stream key in screenshots, examples, or logs. Store secret configuration with appropriately restricted access rather than putting a real key in a public service file.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use the current YouTube ingest details
Get the ingestion information for the selected YouTube live stream. YouTube’s LiveStreams reference distinguishes primary and backup ingest addresses and includes the stream name. Use the values for your stream and selected protocol; do not copy a sample endpoint or invent a key.
Create and enable a systemd service
- Use an explicit FFmpeg executable path and arguments. Put the command into a systemd unit configured as a long-running service. The unit must pass the same input, codec, output, and current YouTube ingest details as the working command. Keep secret values in restricted configuration.
- Set a restart policy. Configure
Restart=on-failureand a short, measuredRestartSec=delay. systemd recommendson-failurefor long-running services, but its automatic restart attempts are subject to start-rate limits. - Enable the unit for boot and start it. Enabling arranges startup after a host reboot; starting launches it now. These are separate from the restart policy, which responds to qualifying process exits.
- Verify the service and stream. Confirm the service is active, then check the service journal and YouTube’s stream health/status. After a planned reboot, inspect the journal again and verify that YouTube is receiving the stream.
Test the service on the target Linux distribution during a planned maintenance window. A successful start before an update does not establish that every reboot, input failure, or ingest interruption will recover automatically.

Check whether an update is configured to reboot
On Ubuntu, unattended-upgrades can optionally reboot automatically when an update requires it; reboot timing and configuration are adjustable. This behavior depends on the Ubuntu configuration, not just on FFmpeg. If you run Debian, Fedora, or another distribution, consult documentation for that release rather than assuming Ubuntu’s update behavior applies.
Check YouTube ingest settings if reconnecting fails
RTMPS endpoint requirements
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS and says, “RTMPS is a good choice for most ordinary user content, especially if it requires low latency.” An RTMPS connection needs a valid YouTube ingest endpoint and application path, port 443, and the correct hostname for TLS SNI. A wrong hostname, port, or TLS setup can cause connection errors or timeouts. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide and use the current stream-specific values, not an example URL.

Do not change protocols without checking the stream
YouTube’s protocol comparison covers RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH. RTMP and RTMPS support H.264 and are suited to normal, low, or ultra-low latency; RTMPS encrypts the ingest connection. HLS and DASH add codec options such as HEVC or VP9 and are suited to high-resolution use, with higher-latency characteristics in YouTube’s comparison. Confirm the codec and latency needs before switching protocols: a protocol change is not a generic fix for a failed reconnect. See YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison.
Troubleshoot a service that does not recover
- The service does not start after reboot: Check that the unit is enabled for boot and inspect its journal for startup errors.
- FFmpeg exits repeatedly: Read the actual FFmpeg and systemd journal errors. Check input availability, arguments, credentials, network access, and whether YouTube accepts the ingest connection.
- Restart attempts stop: systemd rate-limits repeated starts. Diagnose the underlying failure before clearing failure state or repeatedly restarting the service.
- RTMPS connections time out or fail: Confirm the stream’s current ingest endpoint and application path, port 443, and the correct TLS SNI hostname.
- The stream does not resume after an update reboot: Confirm systemd started the unit, then check the journal and YouTube stream health/status. Boot startup cannot restore a prior process session or make invalid settings valid.
- A manual stop is followed by no restart: That is expected for an intentional
systemctl stop;Restart=on-failureis not meant to reverse an explicit stop.
Or let it run in the cloud
