If your Raspberry Pi YouTube stream drops frames, first check the Pi model and its encoder path, then compare your resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval with YouTube’s guidance. A Pi 4 Model B is specified for H.264 encoding up to 1080p30—not 1080p60. A Pi 5 uses software video encoders, so performance depends on the encoder software and workload. A dropped-frame warning alone does not identify which part of the chain is failing.
Start with the board and encoding path
Write down the exact Raspberry Pi model and the software doing the encoding. Also record the stream’s codec, resolution, frame rate, target bitrate and keyframe interval. These details let you distinguish an encoding target the board may struggle to sustain from a stream profile or connection problem.
Raspberry Pi 4 Model B
Raspberry Pi’s specification lists H.264 decoding at 1080p60 and H.264 encoding at 1080p30. The 60-fps figure is for decoding, not encoding; it should not be used to assume the Pi 4 can encode a 1080p60 live stream. The specification is a capability reference, not a guarantee that every application will maintain its listed encoding mode continuously under every workload. Raspberry Pi 4 Model B specifications
Raspberry Pi 5
Raspberry Pi’s camera software documentation says Pi 5 uses software video encoders. Encoding speed and latency therefore depend on the software and workload; do not assume it has the same hardware H.264 encoding path as the Pi 4. In the documented camera software, --low-latency reduces encoding latency, with a slight reduction in coding efficiency and a possible slight reduction in maximum frame rate. The documentation says it still easily achieves 1080p30, but this setting is not a universal fix for third-party encoders. Raspberry Pi camera software documentation

Compare your stream settings with YouTube’s guidance
YouTube’s general live encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS recommends H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and no more than 4 seconds between keyframes. For H.264, its published bitrate ranges include these 30-fps profiles:
| Profile | YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3–8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5–14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s platform recommendations, not proof that a particular Pi can encode every bitrate in the range or that your internet connection can upload it reliably. A higher resolution or frame rate generally calls for more encoding and network capacity, so compare the chosen profile with both the board’s documented capability and your available upload bandwidth. If the Pi cannot sustain the encoding workload, try a lower resolution or frame rate. If the connection cannot sustain the stream, YouTube specifically advises lowering the chosen resolution.

Use YouTube’s health messages to narrow down the cause
Open YouTube Live Control Room while the stream is running and check the health messages and their timestamps. YouTube documents errors involving format, bitrate, frame rate, resolution and keyframe cadence. Match a warning to the time the frames dropped and the settings you were using; do not treat the words “dropped frames” as a diagnosis by themselves.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Format or keyframe warning: compare the encoder’s output format and keyframe interval with YouTube’s guidance.
- Bitrate warning: check the configured bitrate and whether the connection can deliver it consistently.
- Frame-rate or resolution warning: confirm the actual output matches the intended profile, then test a lower target if needed.
- Insufficient bandwidth: YouTube advises lowering the selected resolution. A lower encoding workload may also be appropriate if the Pi is the constrained part of the setup.
The messages and timestamps help distinguish an encoder-side problem from an ingest or profile problem, but they do not establish a universal cause for every Raspberry Pi setup. Consult YouTube’s live streaming error messages for the documented errors and remedies.
Run a representative test before relying on a 24/7 stream
- Record the Pi model, encoder software, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval.
- Check that the profile is within YouTube’s guidance and appropriate for the Pi’s encoding path.
- Test with movement and audio similar to the intended stream, rather than assuming a low-motion test represents a more demanding continuous workload.
- Watch Live Control Room health messages during the test and note their timestamps.
- If problems persist, change one setting at a time—such as resolution, frame rate or bitrate—then repeat the test and compare the health messages.
A short successful test is useful, but it cannot establish that every combination of Pi revision, operating system, encoder application, scene and network will remain stable indefinitely. The cited specifications and platform guidance do not provide a universal 24/7 profile or stability guarantee.

Common troubleshooting decisions
- Pi 4 configured for 1080p60 H.264: the published Pi 4 specification lists H.264 encoding at 1080p30; its 1080p60 figure is decoding. Test a lower frame rate consistent with the encode specification.
- Pi 5 using the camera software: encoding is software-based. Consider the documented
--low-latencyoption only if that is the software path you use, and weigh its latency benefit against slightly lower coding efficiency and possible frame-rate impact. - YouTube reports low bandwidth: lower the selected resolution and test again; do not assume replacing the Pi will fix an upload limitation.
- YouTube reports an incorrect format, bitrate, frame rate, resolution or keyframe interval: compare the encoder’s actual output with its configured target and YouTube’s requirements, then correct the flagged setting.
- No clear health message explains the drops: repeat a representative test, keep the profile details and timestamps, and change only one variable per test. The available specifications do not identify every possible cause of frame loss.
