Use Gherkin to describe a behavior in terms the team agrees on, Cucumber to connect those steps to code, and Selenium WebDriver when the behavior needs a real browser. BDD is the collaborative process; Gherkin is the language for examples; Cucumber runs those examples; Selenium controls the browser. Cucumber explicitly says it is not itself a browser automation tool.
How Gherkin, Cucumber, Selenium, and BDD fit together
Behavior-driven development starts with people discussing a behavior and agreeing on concrete examples. Those examples help the team clarify what to build and can guide implementation and later maintenance. Browser automation is one way to check an example, not the definition of BDD.
- BDD: a collaborative development process based on shared understanding and examples.
- Gherkin: a structured, readable language for writing those examples in
.featurefiles. - Cucumber: the runner that reads the feature, matches its steps to step definitions, executes them in order, and reports results.
- Selenium WebDriver: the browser automation layer that navigates pages, finds elements, interacts with them, and observes browser-visible results.
Keep the shared scenario focused on the behavior. Put locators, browser commands, setup, and teardown in step-definition or test-support code.
Agree on an example before automating it
Choose one behavior the team owns, then discuss a concrete example: what is true before the action, what the user does, and what an observer should see afterward. Use the vocabulary of the product or problem domain, not a transcript of every interface gesture.

For example, a search behavior might be expressed like this:
Feature: Search
Scenario: A visitor finds matching content
Given I am on the search page
When I search for "Cheese!"
Then the page title starts with "cheese"
This follows the shape of Cucumber’s Selenium guide example. Replace the public search-provider example with an application and test data your team controls; an external site can change independently of your product.
Write concise, readable Gherkin
Use Given, When, and Then for their distinct jobs
Givenestablishes relevant context or starting state.Whendescribes the event or action being tested.Thenstates an expected, observable outcome.
And and But can continue a sequence for readability. They do not create a different matching namespace: step text is what matters when Cucumber matches a step to a definition. Avoid duplicate or ambiguous step wording.

Choose the right Gherkin structure
- Use a
Featureto name the capability andScenario(also calledExample) for an individual example. - Use
Rulewhen multiple examples illustrate one business rule. - Use a
Scenario Outlinewith anExamplestable when a small set of data variations exercises the same behavior. - Use a Data Table for structured tabular input or a Doc String for larger text input passed to a step.
Aim for three to five steps per example as a guideline, not a quota. A scenario that reads like a click-by-click script couples the specification to page layout; one that is too long can hide the rule it is meant to explain. Keep any Background brief and relevant.

Connect Gherkin steps to Selenium with Cucumber
Cucumber finds a step definition matching each scenario step and calls the definitions in sequence. A definition should translate shared domain language into a reusable operation, delegating browser mechanics to support code where appropriate. Put the check for the stated result in the result-oriented Then step.
In the search example, the implementation needs to open the search page, locate its input, submit the term, wait for the page to update, and verify the title. The following Java-shaped outline illustrates the responsibilities; it is not a drop-in project because the exact Cucumber binding, driver lifecycle, imports, and assertion library depend on your setup:

Cucumber’s browser guide gives language examples in Java, Kotlin, JavaScript, and Ruby. Select the binding that fits your project; setup and fixture APIs are not identical across languages. The example above is an implementation sketch, not a claim of execution or a substitute for checking your binding’s current API.
Manage browser state, waits, and cleanup
- Create a WebDriver for the scenario. Initialize it in test support or a scenario-scoped fixture, and make it available to step definitions without sharing mutable browser state across unrelated scenarios.
- Start from known application state. Navigate to a stable test environment and use controlled test data so changes to a third-party page do not look like product regressions.
- Wait for a meaningful condition. Dynamic content may appear after navigation or submission. Use an explicit wait for the expected title, element, or state instead of an arbitrary sleep. The Cucumber Selenium example demonstrates condition-based waiting.
- Close the browser in teardown. Ensure driver shutdown runs even when a scenario fails. For parallel runs, isolate the driver and test data per scenario or worker.
Exact lifecycle hooks vary by language and Cucumber implementation, so use the hook or fixture mechanism documented for your chosen binding. The important behavior is per-scenario isolation and reliable teardown.

Assert an outcome a user or observer can see
A Then should compare actual and expected results. Prefer an observable result such as a visible confirmation, resulting page, report, or emitted message over a deeply buried database detail. The scenario should say what success means; Selenium code should inspect the relevant browser state to verify it.

Not every behavior needs a browser. Use Selenium when browser interaction is part of what you need to validate. Lower-level unit or component examples can provide clearer feedback for internal behavior, while a concise browser acceptance scenario checks that a user-facing path works across the browser boundary.
Run and debug one feature at a time
- Run a single feature or scenario in the project’s configured Cucumber runner.
- Check that every step resolves to exactly one step definition. An undefined step needs a definition; an ambiguous step needs clearer wording or matching patterns.
- Separate failures by layer: a failed assertion means the observed result differed from the expectation; a driver, browser, navigation, or environment error may prevent the scenario from reaching that assertion.
- When a browser scenario fails, capture a screenshot or other diagnostic if your Cucumber binding and reporter support it. Cucumber’s browser guide includes screenshot-on-failure examples.
- Once the scenario is reliable in isolation, run it with the relevant suite and execution settings.
Common problems and practical fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A step is undefined | No step definition matches its text. | Add a definition in the project’s Cucumber binding, or adjust the scenario to use the team’s intended domain wording. |
| A step is ambiguous | More than one definition matches the same step text. | Make the language or matching patterns distinct; changing only Given/When/Then does not make otherwise identical step text distinct. |
| The test passes locally but fails intermittently on a dynamic page | The code proceeds before the expected browser state is ready, or test state is shared. | Wait for a specific expected condition and isolate browser and test data state per scenario or worker. |
| The scenario describes clicks and field positions | Interface mechanics have leaked into a shared behavior specification. | Rewrite the steps around the user’s goal and outcome; keep selectors and click sequences in step-definition/support code. |
| A public-site example fails after the site changes | The test depends on an external page or its data. | Use a stable environment and data controlled by your team for product checks. |
| The browser stays open after a failed scenario | Cleanup is not guaranteed to run on failure. | Move shutdown into the binding’s teardown hook or fixture that runs regardless of scenario outcome. |
| A scenario is difficult to understand or maintain | It contains too many steps, irrelevant background state, or repeated variants. | Focus it on one example; use a short Background only for shared relevant context, and consider a Scenario Outline for a small set of meaningful data variations. |
Choose the test layer and learning path deliberately
Use a browser-level Cucumber scenario for an agreed behavior whose browser-facing path matters; do not force every test into Gherkin. For the implementation language, Cucumber’s Selenium guide includes Java, Kotlin, JavaScript, and Ruby examples. Cucumber’s learning page links to free Cucumber School videos and books including The Cucumber Book, BDD in Action, and The Cucumber Field Guide; the Cucumber School site lists free courses, including Java and JavaScript tracks, as well as live training.
For Java-specific further reading, the publisher listing for The Cucumber for Java Book describes coverage of Cucumber with Java, including Selenium-driven application testing and asynchronous Ajax calls. Its scope is Java-focused, and current availability may vary.

Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a page image rather than validate an interactive behavior, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its clean-shot workflow accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same request in Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
These capture a page; they do not replace a Cucumber scenario that must exercise and assert an interactive application behavior. ScreenshotNeo includes 1,000 shots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for the free plan.
