If the endpoint is a displacement rather than another element, use drag_and_drop_by_offset(). A completed mouse gesture does not by itself prove that the page accepted the drop, so verify the resulting application state.
Drag an element onto another element
This example assumes driver is an active WebDriver session and that the page has elements with the IDs shown. Replace those locators with stable ones from the page under test.

ActionChains(driver).drag_and_drop(source, target).perform()Selenium describes this action as holding the left mouse button on the source, moving to the target, and releasing. The calls are queued until perform() sends them to the browser. The current Selenium Python API documentation is for version 4.50.0 and gives ActionChains a default pointer-move duration of 250 milliseconds; that duration can be overridden when constructing the chain. Choose the right endpoint
Drop on a destination element
Use drag_and_drop(source, target) when the intended destination is a page element you can locate. Both arguments are WebElements.

Move by an X/Y offset
Use drag_and_drop_by_offset(source, xoffset, yoffset) when the destination is best described by a coordinate displacement from the source rather than by a target WebElement. The offsets are integers.
ActionChains(driver).drag_and_drop_by_offset(source, 120, 40).perform()These are two ways to specify the endpoint, not separate guarantees about how a page will handle the gesture. Wait for and verify the page result
After the action, assert an application-level outcome: for example, that an item has a new parent, that a list has changed order, or that a confirmation appears. Do not treat the absence of a WebDriver error as proof that the application accepted the drop.
Use the page’s normal synchronization strategy before asserting the outcome. The expected result and appropriate wait depend on the application; Selenium’s generic drag API does not define a universal success condition.

Troubleshoot a drag that does not take
- The action runs but nothing changes: check that the selected source and destination are the intended elements and that the destination is the actual drop region. Confirm the expected state change in the page rather than relying on the action completing.
- The wrong location receives the drop: prefer a destination WebElement when the page exposes one. If the endpoint is genuinely coordinate-based, adjust the integer offsets and verify the resulting state.
- The test checks too early: wait for an application-specific signal, such as the updated item order or a confirmation, before asserting.
- A custom drag handler still does not respond: inspect how the page implements dragging and what region it accepts. The official documentation does not establish a universal workaround for custom JavaScript or HTML5 drag behavior, nor a browser-by-browser compatibility matrix. Do not assume that injecting JavaScript events will fix it.
