Use functional tests for actions and outcomes, visual tests for layout and appearance, and both for important flows: neither type proves what the other checks.
What functional testing checks
Functional testing asks whether a feature works: can a user submit a valid form, get an invalid entry rejected, complete checkout, reach the right page, or trigger the expected change in application state? Good assertions verify the meaningful outcome, not merely that a click or keystroke occurred.
For example, a checkout test might assert that an order is created and a confirmation is shown. That establishes behavior covered by those assertions, but it does not establish that the confirmation is positioned correctly, legible, or styled as the design intended.
What visual testing checks
Visual testing asks whether the interface rendered as expected at a particular state. A common approach captures screenshots at selected checkpoints and compares them with approved baseline images. A difference can expose layout shifts, styling changes, missing images, altered text, or responsive regressions that behavior assertions may not catch.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Applitools describes visual testing as regression testing for checking whether previously correct screens have changed unexpectedly. A changed screenshot is evidence of a difference, not automatic proof of a defect: the change may be an approved design update or an unintended regression.
How the methods differ
| Question | Functional testing | Visual testing |
|---|---|---|
| What does it evaluate? | Behavior, business rules, and outcomes | Rendered appearance at a selected state |
| Typical evidence | Assertions about results, navigation, validation, or state | A screenshot compared with an approved baseline |
| Can it establish that controls work? | Yes, for the interactions and outcomes actually tested | No; a matching screenshot does not prove interactions work |
| Can it establish that the page looks right? | Not by itself | It can reveal appearance changes, which still need interpretation |
The two methods are complementary. A test can pass because a button still submits correctly while its text or color has regressed; a screenshot can match while the button is broken.
When to use functional tests
Prioritize functional coverage where correctness depends on an action, rule, or state transition:

Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Form submission, validation, and error handling.
- Checkout, account creation, sign-in, and other critical journeys.
- Permissions and role-dependent behavior.
- Calculations, API-backed state changes, and navigation.
Assert what matters to the user or business. A click assertion alone is weak evidence if the required result is a saved record, an accurate total, or a clear error.

When to use visual tests
Use visual checks when appearance itself is part of correctness, particularly for shared design-system components, high-traffic pages, responsive layouts, typography, spacing, colors, and image rendering. They are useful when a CSS or rendering change might leave functional behavior untouched.
Capture stable, meaningful states rather than arbitrary moments. Wait for required data and fonts, keep test data consistent where possible, and consider capturing a component or region instead of an entire page when unrelated page content changes frequently.

When and how to combine them
For a critical journey, drive the application into a known state, assert the functional outcome, and capture selected visual checkpoints. This provides evidence about both behavior and the resulting interface; it does not guarantee that the software is defect-free.
- Choose the journey and states. Identify the key user outcome and the screens where appearance matters.
- Stabilize the setup. Use repeatable data and wait for content, fonts, and other required resources to load.
- Assert the behavior. Verify the result that matters, such as successful submission or a validation message.
- Capture and compare. Use focused screenshots where possible; mask genuinely dynamic regions rather than hiding meaningful content.
- Review each difference. Accept a new baseline only when the changed appearance is approved; otherwise preserve the prior baseline and investigate.
Baselines, noise, and approvals
The initial screenshot becomes the reference baseline. Later captures are compared against it. A difference may be caused by a regression, an intentional change, dynamic content, or rendering variation, so teams need a review policy rather than automatic approval of every update.
- Keep volatile values such as timestamps or changing content out of the comparison where they are irrelevant, using appropriate masks or stable test data.
- Scope screenshots to the component or region under test if unrelated page chrome creates noise.
- Set comparison sensitivity deliberately. Microsoft’s Playwright guidance demonstrates thresholds, including a 1% pixel allowance as a configuration example; that figure is not a universal recommended threshold.
- Define who may approve baseline changes and retain a traceable record of approved updates.
Implementation options
Playwright screenshot assertions
Microsoft’s Power Platform Playwright example uses toHaveScreenshot() to establish and compare screenshot baselines. Teams can keep baselines in source control and use screenshot scope, masks, and comparison thresholds to manage dynamic areas and rendering variation. Pixel-level differences can fail an assertion, depending on configuration.

Applitools Eyes
Applitools’ tutorial describes integrating Eyes with Playwright, reviewing and updating baselines, configuring comparison precision, and using a hosted grid for browser and device variants alongside local execution. These are vendor-described capabilities, not an independent comparison of accuracy or performance.
When assessing an implementation, compare framework and language fit, baseline storage and approval workflow, screenshot scoping and masking, sensitivity controls, browser and viewport coverage, CI integration, privacy requirements, maintenance effort, and current cost. The cited material does not establish current pricing, independent comparative accuracy, or a universally best provider.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Accessibility needs its own assessment
A screen can look correct and still be inaccessible, and a successful functional flow does not establish accessibility. Playwright’s accessibility guidance says automation can catch some common issues, such as poor color contrast, controls without labels, and duplicate IDs, but many issues require manual assessment. Combine automated checks with manual assessment and inclusive user testing.

For capturing a page outside your test runner, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF; it accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Those cleanup steps can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with verdict and billing information in response headers. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents.
