When Puppeteer fails, first identify the stage that failed—browser discovery, launch, navigation, an element wait, an interaction, or deployment. Record your Puppeteer and browser versions, operating system or container image, and exact error before changing settings. Browser launch errors can come from missing libraries, permissions, sandbox configuration, or unwritable paths, not just application code.

Start with the failure stage

Change one thing at a time. A useful first diagnostic record includes:

  • Puppeteer version and browser version.
  • Operating system, container image, or cloud runtime.
  • The exact error and whether it occurs during installation, launch, navigation, waiting, or interaction.
  • The process user and which profile, cache, and configuration paths it can write to.

This narrows the likely cause and makes it easier to distinguish a browser installation problem from a page condition or deployment constraint.

Why can’t Puppeteer find its browser?

Check whether installation downloaded a browser and whether Puppeteer is looking in the same cache location. Since Puppeteer 19.0.0, its default browser download cache is ~/.cache/puppeteer. The PUPPETEER_CACHE_DIR environment variable can move that cache. See the official troubleshooting guide for installation and cache details.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Confirm the browser executable exists at the configured location and is accessible to the process user.
  • If your build reuses node_modules, check that the install step and runtime use compatible browser/cache locations. The official guide describes App Engine and Cloud Functions cases where placing the cache inside node_modules can help browser discovery.
  • If you set executablePath, verify that path on the machine or image where Puppeteer actually runs. The LaunchOptions reference cautions that Puppeteer is guaranteed to work only with its bundled browser.

Why does Chrome fail to launch?

Separate executable discovery from executable startup. If Chrome is found but exits before Puppeteer connects, investigate host libraries, permissions, sandbox setup, and writable paths before changing Puppeteer code.

Linux libraries and executable permissions

On Linux, missing shared libraries can prevent Chrome from starting. The official troubleshooting page suggests checking dependencies with ldd chrome | grep not, then installing the appropriate packages for your distribution. Also check that the executable is present and can run as the same user that starts Puppeteer; a dependency list for one distribution is not universal.

Windows policies and permissions

On Windows, check whether Chrome policies conflict with Puppeteer’s default extension behavior. The troubleshooting guide also describes a downloaded-Chrome permissions workaround for sandbox access errors that can arise with older Puppeteer versions or affected installations. Verify the version and policy context before applying it rather than treating it as a standard fix.

Capture browser output before changing launch timeouts

The current LaunchOptions reference lists a default launch timeout of 30,000 ms. You can configure timeout; its dumpio option forwards browser stdout and stderr, which can expose the underlying startup failure. Gather that output before increasing the timeout: extra time will not fix a missing library, permission denial, or invalid executable path.

How should you handle Linux sandbox errors?

If Chrome reports No usable sandbox!, investigate the host’s sandbox configuration. Chrome uses multiple sandboxing layers, and disabling them removes a security boundary. The Puppeteer troubleshooting documentation states: “Running without a sandbox is strongly discouraged.” Do not treat --no-sandbox as a routine fix; use it only when you understand and accept the security trade-off for the environment.

Ubuntu 23.10 and newer may have an AppArmor profile that blocks user namespaces for Puppeteer-downloaded Chrome for Testing binaries. Consult the environment-specific guidance linked from the Puppeteer troubleshooting page and the Chromium security documentation it references. The right remedy depends on the host’s configuration.

Why does Chrome crash in a read-only container?

Chrome writes profile, configuration, and cache data when it starts. In a container with restricted writable paths, provide writable config and cache directories and a writable user-data directory, or mount writable volumes owned by the browser process user. One possible symptom of paths that cannot be written is chrome_crashpad_handler: --database is required.

Check the permissions from inside the container as the actual runtime user. A directory that is writable during image build may not be writable after deployment or under a different user.

What should you check on Alpine?

The Puppeteer troubleshooting guide says Chrome does not support Alpine out of the box and requires compatible system dependencies. It also describes timeout problems with the Chromium version current for Alpine 3.20 when that guidance was written, along with matching Chromium to a supported Puppeteer version. Treat that as a version-specific warning, not a claim that every Alpine build has the same failure. Check the current image, Chromium version, Puppeteer compatibility, and dependencies together.

How do you fix selector, interaction, or navigation timeouts?

A timeout means the operation did not reach its configured condition before the wait expired. Find out which operation timed out and what condition it was waiting for; raising the duration without checking the condition can hide the real issue.

Element selection and interaction

For a locator or selector timeout, check that the selector is valid in the current page or frame, that asynchronous page updates can produce the element, and that the requested action can become possible—for example, that the element becomes visible and enabled.

Puppeteer’s current interactions guide recommends locators for selecting and interacting with elements because they wait for the element and relevant action preconditions. Use waitForSelector when you need its lower-level behavior. Its timeout is 30,000 ms by default and can be configured for a call or through page defaults. When it returns an element handle, dispose of that handle when appropriate.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Navigation and lifecycle waits

Navigation and other waits use a timeout and a waitUntil lifecycle event; the current WaitForOptions reference lists load as the default. Choosing another lifecycle event changes when the wait resolves; it does not guarantee that the page is fully usable at that point. Match the wait to the page condition your next step actually needs.

Browser launch waits

The current LaunchOptions reference also lists 30,000 ms as the default launch timeout. If startup is genuinely slow, a configured timeout may be appropriate, but first inspect the browser’s output with dumpio and rule out startup failures such as missing dependencies or unwritable paths.

What changes in cloud deployment?

Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide covers App Engine, Cloud Functions, Cloud Run, Heroku, and AWS Lambda. Treat its platform examples as starting points: provider runtimes, settings, and images can change, so verify current requirements for the deployment you use.

  • Cloud Run: The guide says the default Node.js runtime does not include the system packages needed for Headless Chrome; its example uses a Dockerfile and dependencies. It also notes that CPU allocation after an HTTP response can affect work started in the background.
  • App Engine and Cloud Functions: Browser cache placement can matter when build systems reuse node_modules; check the guide’s examples against your install and runtime layout.
  • Docker process management: If zombie Chrome processes persist, the guide suggests checking whether dumb-init is appropriate. It is an operational tip, not a universal Puppeteer requirement.
