What does sourceScheme mean in Puppeteer cookies?
The field records the source scheme associated with the cookie’s originating site: in Puppeteer’s words, it “Represents the source scheme of the origin that originally set the cookie.” It is not simply another name for whether the cookie is marked secure. Puppeteer documents sourceScheme and secure as separate properties, and its reference does not specify a complete mapping between every possible pair of values. Is sourceScheme available on CookieParam and CookieData?
Yes. Puppeteer documents sourceScheme as optional on both the page-level CookieParam and browser-level CookieData interfaces, and labels the property “Supported only in Chrome.” Do not assume that another browser supports it just because the field appears in Puppeteer’s types. How can the setting URL affect it?
When supplying a CookieParam, the url field can affect default values for the cookie’s domain, path, and source scheme. If you specify a URL, account for that interaction rather than assuming it only identifies a destination. The reference does not provide a complete rule for every possible combination, so consult the documentation for your installed Puppeteer version when setting explicit values. Should you set sourceScheme to Unset?
Usually, do not choose Unset merely because it sounds like an omitted or neutral value. Puppeteer describes it specifically as temporary protocol-client compatibility behavior for emulating legacy cookie scope, and says it will be removed in the future. The reference does not give a removal date or recommend it as a general default. Use it only when your protocol-client compatibility case requires that behavior; otherwise, follow the documented context and the version-specific guidance for your project.

How is sourceScheme different from secure?
sourceScheme describes the scheme of the origin that originally set the cookie. secure is a separate cookie property. Since Puppeteer’s API reference does not define a complete mapping between them, avoid inferring one from a single value or assuming that setting one automatically determines the other. Which Puppeteer version should you check?
The API pages consulted for this explanation report Puppeteer v25.11.0 for CookieSourceScheme and v25.12.0 for CookieParam and CookieData (documentation observed October 3, 2026). Those page versions are not a guarantee that your installed package exposes identical documentation or behavior.
