Maintain meaningful test coverage by treating AI-generated tests as drafts: establish a baseline, give the assistant explicit behavioral requirements, review whether each test would catch a realistic regression, and run the same focused and regression checks your team requires for any code change. Coverage is a diagnostic for code tests have executed—not proof that the important behavior is correct.

What coverage can—and cannot—tell you

Code coverage measures which parts of a program ran while tests executed. Depending on the tool, that may mean statements or lines, branches, conditions, or other measured units. It helps locate code that tests did not reach and makes changes in coverage visible. It does not establish that tests checked the right outcomes, tried relevant inputs, or verified every requirement.

Google’s Testing Blog describes high coverage as a necessary but insufficient condition for good testing in its coverage guidance. A test can execute a line without asserting anything useful about its result. Conversely, some important requirements—such as a user journey across services—may need evidence beyond unit-test coverage.

Use more than one view of coverage

  • Overall coverage: a broad view of the repository, useful for seeing long-term direction but potentially obscuring where a new change adds or removes test evidence.
  • Changed-code coverage: coverage for lines or code touched by a change. This can support incremental improvement when a legacy repository has large gaps. Google identifies changelist coverage as one possible approach.
  • Behavior and feature coverage: a record of requirements, features, and user behaviors exercised by tests. This helps expose requirements that a line-based percentage cannot represent.

Track the measures your team can interpret and act on. A percentage should prompt investigation, not substitute for deciding whether the relevant behavior is protected.

Set a baseline and a risk-based goal

Before changing the workflow, record the current overall and changed-code coverage, the test tiers already in use, and the areas where failure would matter most. Identify critical modules, customer journeys, and requirements. Note where the suite is slow, flaky, or difficult to run, since feedback time affects how often developers can use it during implementation.

Choose goals based on business impact, code churn, expected lifetime, complexity, and domain risks—not on a universal threshold. Google’s August 2020 coverage guidance gives 60% as an acceptable, 75% as a commendable, and 90% as an exemplary reference band within that article, while explicitly saying there is no ideal percentage for every product. Those figures are Google’s guidance, not industry-wide requirements or NIST-mandated targets.

If repository-wide coverage is low, avoid making a large legacy cleanup a prerequisite for protecting new work. A changed-code measure can make progress visible while the team adds tests where risk and maintenance value justify them.

Ask the AI assistant for tests with the change

Provide the assistant with the behavior to preserve, not just a request to raise a percentage. Include acceptance criteria, relevant implementation and caller context, existing test examples, framework conventions, and constraints such as time, network, or database use. GitHub’s Copilot rollout documentation recommends setting goals and a baseline and describes prompting for inline tests and edge cases; it is vendor guidance, not controlled evidence that using Copilot raises coverage.

A useful test-generation prompt

Adapt a prompt like this to your project:

Write tests for the changed behavior described below. Treat these acceptance criteria as the source of truth: [criteria]. Follow the conventions in [existing test file]. Cover normal behavior, boundary values, invalid inputs, and relevant failure states, including [specific cases]. Assert externally observable outcomes, not private implementation details. Keep tests deterministic and isolated; do not call live services. For each test, briefly state which requirement or regression it protects. Do not change production code unless you explain why the current interface prevents testing.

Ask for tests for meaningful cases, rather than asking the model to maximize the number of cases. For a collection-handling function, for example, relevant cases might include an empty collection, a typical collection, a boundary size, and invalid or null input if the interface permits it. Which cases apply depends on the actual contract; do not add an invalid-input test merely because a prompt template mentions one.

Keep expected behavior separate from implementation

Tests should express what callers or users are entitled to observe. If a generated assertion simply mirrors the implementation’s current steps or data structure, it may preserve a bug rather than the requirement. Provide the assistant with the contract and ask it to identify assumptions it cannot resolve instead of silently inventing expected behavior.

Review generated tests before trusting their coverage

Review test code as carefully as production code. A passing test suite and a higher percentage are not enough to establish that generated tests are useful. NIST’s GenAI Code Challenge treats coverage of correct tests separately from whether tests detect specified errors, underscoring that these are distinct questions; its bounded elementary-Python challenge should not be generalized to every language or production repository.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Requirement fit: Does each assertion correspond to an acceptance criterion or a credible risk?
  • Failure sensitivity: Would the test fail if the behavior it claims to protect broke? Consider a plausible regression, such as an off-by-one boundary, a dropped validation, or an incorrect error result.
  • Assertion strength: Does the test verify meaningful values, state, or externally visible outcomes rather than merely checking that execution completed?
  • Independence: Does the expected result come from the contract or an independent fixture rather than repeating the same calculation as the implementation?
  • Determinism: Does it avoid uncontrolled clocks, randomness, network calls, shared mutable state, and order dependence—or control those dependencies explicitly?
  • Setup and cleanup: Are resources and state restored reliably, including when an assertion fails?
  • Scope: Does the test belong at the unit, integration, or end-to-end level needed to observe the behavior?

Reject or revise tests that are redundant, brittle, or assert incidental implementation details. If requirements are ambiguous, resolve them with the product owner or responsible engineer before treating a generated expectation as authoritative.

Run a layered test workflow

Use fast feedback while the change is being authored, then preserve the project’s normal automated regression and release gates. NIST’s SSDF Community Profile for AI model development and AI systems recommends considering automated regression testing, documenting test results, and retesting when AI models change. It augments SSDF 1.1 and is scoped to AI model development and AI systems; it is not a prescriptive test standard for every team using a coding assistant.

  1. Run focused tests during iteration. Execute the tests closest to the changed function or module after each meaningful edit. This shortens the feedback loop and makes failures easier to diagnose.
  2. Run the required regression suite. Use the repository’s established local or CI pipeline before merging. A focused pass does not replace broader checks required by the team.
  3. Add cross-component tests where needed. Use integration tests when correctness depends on interactions between components, persistence, or service boundaries.
  4. Protect critical user journeys. Use end-to-end tests for important workflows whose correctness cannot be established by isolated unit tests. Keep these targeted because they typically require more setup and can provide slower feedback.
  5. Document and triage results. Record failures, flaky behavior, and unresolved issues through the team’s ordinary review process; do not silently discard a failing check because the test was AI-generated.
  6. Review changes to the AI system. If a coding assistant or model changes, evaluate generated code and tests under the team’s normal validation process. NIST DevSecOps guidance emphasizes human validation and oversight of AI-generated content and agent actions.

Code coverage does not replace security, accessibility, privacy, localization, performance, or other testing appropriate to the product. Choose these checks from the product’s risks and requirements; a line percentage cannot establish that those properties hold.

Use coverage reports to find the next useful test

After tests run, inspect uncovered changed lines and unexpected patterns. Ask whether the missing code corresponds to an untested behavior or risk, whether the path is reachable, and whether the code should instead be simplified or removed. Add a test when it protects meaningful behavior; refactor code that is unnecessarily difficult to test. Google’s guidance recommends writing comprehensive tests without first optimizing a number, then using coverage to find missed code and iterating while the cost is worthwhile.

When to add mutation and other quality checks

When a team needs evidence that tests detect behavior changes rather than merely execute code, consider mutation testing. It deliberately injects small faults—such as changing a comparison or return value—and checks whether tests detect them. Google’s mutation testing article describes the technique as a way to assess whether tests catch injected faults.

Mutation runs add computation and can produce findings that require human interpretation, so target them to high-risk modules or code-review findings rather than requiring exhaustive runs everywhere. Also use black-box tests for requirements, negative inputs, boundaries, and combinations when they provide evidence that unit coverage cannot. Apply security analysis according to the product’s threat model; NIST’s minimum verification guidance addresses verification of code and security-relevant practices, not a single coverage target.

Make coverage changes visible in code review

Include the same review evidence for AI-assisted changes as for other changes. A useful review note identifies the requirement being changed, the tests added or updated, the relevant focused and regression checks run, and any material coverage change or remaining risk. Reviewers should be able to distinguish generated tests from verified behavior and see how failures were handled. Agentic workflows also need the team’s existing authorization controls, auditability, and human oversight.

Practical review checklist

  • The test baseline and changed-code signal are visible to the team.
  • Tests cover the stated behavior and relevant boundaries or failure cases.
  • Assertions would catch plausible regressions and do not merely echo implementation details.
  • Focused tests and required automated regression checks have run.
  • Integration, user-journey, and domain-specific checks are included where risk calls for them.
  • Coverage gaps, flaky tests, and unresolved failures are documented and triaged.

Or skip the browser setup

For a visual check of a web page, a screenshot can complement functional tests, but it does not establish code coverage or replace assertions. Instead of wiring up a browser capture workflow, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL in one GET request and returns an image or PDF. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture of Stripe:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. Cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Frequently Asked Questions

Should AI-generated tests be treated differently from hand-written tests during release review?

They should go through the same engineering review and release process as other proposed code and tests; generation does not establish correctness.

Does a higher coverage percentage prove that a change is safe to release?

No. Coverage records measured code execution, while release confidence also depends on assertions, requirements, regression results, and the product’s risk-specific checks.
