The context separates cookies and cache from other browser contexts; close it when finished to close its pages.
Create an isolated context and page
This example launches Puppeteer, creates a non-default context, opens a page inside it, and cleans up both resources it owns. The current Puppeteer API reference displays version 25.12.0; check your installed version if an API call differs.
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
let context;
try {
// Fresh context with cookies and cache separate from other contexts.
context = await browser.createBrowserContext();
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
// Work with this page and any popups it opens.
} finally {
if (context) {
await context.close();
}
await browser.close();
}
createBrowserContext() returns a promise, so await it. The official method reference says the new context does not share cookies or cache with other browser contexts. Puppeteer’s API reference also describes storage isolation including cookies and localStorage.
What the isolation covers
- Separate browser state: cookies and cache are not shared across browser contexts; Puppeteer also identifies localStorage as isolated storage.
- Pages and popups stay together: a popup opened by a page, for example through
window.open(), belongs to that page’s context. - Not a separate browser process: contexts are separate contexts inside a browser. The documented storage separation is not a claim of OS-level sandboxing or complete security isolation.
Put every page in the intended context
Call context.newPage() for pages that need the isolated state. Calling browser.newPage() instead creates a page in the browser’s default context, so that page will not use the newly created context.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The default context is available through browser.defaultBrowserContext(), but it cannot be closed. Use createBrowserContext() when you need fresh, disposable state. See the default context reference.
Close the context you created
await context.close() closes that context and all pages associated with it, including its popups. The BrowserContext reference documents this cleanup behavior.

If your code receives a Browser instance created elsewhere, close the context your code created, but do not close the browser unless your code owns its lifecycle. browser.close() closes the browser and its pages; browser.disconnect() disconnects Puppeteer while leaving the browser process running. See the Browser API reference.
Optional context settings
createBrowserContext() accepts optional BrowserContextOptions. The current reference lists downloadBehavior, proxyBypassList, and proxyServer. The proxy option can specify a proxy for requests; username and password can be set with Page.authenticate. These settings are unnecessary for basic isolation, and support can vary by Puppeteer version and browser. Consult the BrowserContextOptions reference for details.

Common mistakes and fixes
- Calling
createIncognitoBrowserContext(): the current method iscreateBrowserContext(). Puppeteer records the old name’s breaking rename in version 22.0.0, dated 2024-02-05, in its changelog. - Opening the page on
browser: usecontext.newPage(), notbrowser.newPage(), when the page needs the isolated context. - Closing the wrong object: close the created context to dispose of its pages. Close the browser only if your code owns the launched browser.
- Closing the default context: it cannot be closed. Create a separate context when you need a disposable one.
- Assuming process-level security: context separation is documented as storage isolation, not a separate OS process or complete security boundary.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a webpage rather than automate an isolated browser session, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. Its capture can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status.
For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot. Get an API key and see parameters in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo includes 1,000 screenshots per month on its free plan with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for free and get 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
