Run code in a known iframe
When you can identify the iframe element with a selector, use ElementHandle.contentFrame() to get its frame. Wait for the element you need inside that frame, then evaluate code there:

console.log(status);contentFrame() associates the iframe element with its Puppeteer Frame. The documented frame API describes Frame.evaluate() as behaving like Page.evaluate(), except it runs in that frame’s context: Puppeteer Frame API.
Choose and access the right frame
Use an iframe selector when it is distinctive
This is usually the simplest approach if the page has a stable selector such as iframe#app-frame. After obtaining the iframe element, call contentFrame(), check that it returned a frame, and use that frame for waits and evaluation. The mapping is documented by ElementHandle.contentFrame().

Inspect the frame list when a selector is not the best signal
If you know the frame by a URL or another frame-level property, inspect page.frames() and select the matching frame. You can also traverse the structure from page.mainFrame() through each frame’s childFrames() when the target is nested. See the Page.frames() and Frame API references.

console.log(title);Choose by URL only when the URL is a reliable identifier for your page; if several frames can match, refine the condition. For a nested iframe, identify the specific child frame you need rather than assuming evaluation in its parent also reaches it.

Use $eval for one element
When you only need one matching element’s value, frame.$eval(selector, fn) runs the function on the first matching element in that frame:

Pass Node.js values into the frame explicitly
The function passed to evaluate() is serialized and executed in the browser’s frame context. It cannot access variables or helper functions that exist only in Node.js lexical scope. Pass needed values as arguments instead:

console.log(result);The function’s return value is sent back to Node.js. Puppeteer awaits a promise returned by the evaluated function. Primitive results transfer directly, and ordinary objects are serialized; a DOM node does not return as a live DOM object. If you need to keep interacting with a browser-side object, use an evaluation handle rather than expecting a returned node to remain live. See Puppeteer evaluate documentation.

Wait for the iframe’s actual content
Finding an iframe element does not guarantee that the content you need has loaded. After obtaining its frame, wait for a selector that signals the relevant state before evaluating:

Frames can attach, navigate, or detach; after significant navigation, reacquire the frame associated with the current iframe document and wait for the expected content again. A nested iframe is its own child frame, so obtain and evaluate that frame separately.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The selector is missing in
page.evaluate():page.evaluate()uses the main frame context. Obtain the target frame and useframe.evaluate()orframe.$eval(). contentFrame()returns no frame: the iframe’s frame may not be available at that moment. Check the element selector and page state, then wait as appropriate and try to obtain the frame again.waitForSelector()times out: confirm that the selector belongs to the target frame, that you selected the right frame, and that the iframe has reached the state your selector indicates. If the iframe navigated, reacquire its current frame.- Evaluated code cannot find a Node.js variable: pass the value as an
evaluate(fn, value)argument; do not rely on outer-scope variables or helpers. - The result is not a usable DOM element in Node.js: evaluation returns serialized data, not a live DOM node. Return the properties you need, or use an evaluation handle for browser-side interaction.
- A nested iframe’s content is absent: the parent frame’s evaluation does not automatically execute in its child. Identify the nested frame and run the operation there.

Why can’t `page.evaluate()` find an element inside an iframe?
It evaluates in the page’s main frame. Get the iframe’s `Frame` and use `frame.evaluate()` or `frame.$eval()` instead.
Can `frame.evaluate()` return a live element to Node.js?
No. Evaluation returns serialized values, not live DOM nodes. Return the element’s data or use an evaluation handle if you need a browser-side object.
