To run Cypress tests in CI, install Cypress in your project, start the application, wait until it is reachable, and run npx cypress run. For GitHub Actions, Cypress’s maintained cypress-io/github-action@v7 can install dependencies, build and start your app, and execute tests. Cypress Cloud recording is optional for a basic run but required for Cypress’s documented parallelization across machines.

What a Cypress CI job needs

A reliable job does four things in sequence: checks out the same code being tested, installs project dependencies, starts the application under test, and waits for that application to be ready before invoking Cypress. If the app is still starting when tests begin, visits can fail even though the server eventually comes up.

Cypress’s official guidance says it can run in CI providers including GitHub Actions, CircleCI, GitLab CI, Jenkins, and AWS CodeBuild. Provider syntax varies, but the install, readiness, and test steps are the same. See the Cypress CI overview.

Install Cypress and run it from the command line

Add Cypress as a development dependency using the package manager already used by the project:

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • npm install cypress --save-dev
  • yarn add cypress --dev
  • pnpm add --save-dev cypress
  • bun add --dev cypress

Commit the resulting package manifest and lockfile so CI installs the project’s declared dependencies. The basic headless CI command is:

npx cypress run

Use the corresponding package-manager invocation if preferred, and put the install and run commands in your provider’s workflow. The CLI reference documents available flags, including recording options: Cypress CLI commands and options.

Start the app and wait until it is ready

Tests commonly visit a local server started in the job. Starting it with npm start & and immediately running Cypress creates a race: the next command may start before the server is listening. Prefer an explicit readiness check rather than an arbitrary fixed sleep, which can be too short on a slow runner and waste time on a fast one.

Cypress’s maintained GitHub Action supports start and wait-on inputs to orchestrate this. A general alternative in a custom script is concurrently with wait-on, as described in the Cypress CI overview. Set the URL to the actual local address and port your app serves; ensure the server process remains alive for the test duration.

Run Cypress in GitHub Actions

The following workflow uses the maintained Cypress action on an Ubuntu-hosted runner. Replace the sample build and start commands with the scripts used by your project, and set the readiness URL to the app’s actual address.

name: Cypress tests
on: [push, pull_request]
jobs:
  cypress:
    runs-on: ubuntu-latest
    steps:
      - uses: actions/checkout@v4
      - uses: cypress-io/github-action@v7
        with:
          build: npm run build
          start: npm start
          wait-on: 'http://localhost:3000

In the example, the YAML scalar for wait-on should be quoted as 'http://localhost:3000'; a complete step is:

      - uses: cypress-io/github-action@v7
        with:
          build: npm run build
          start: npm start
          wait-on: 'http://localhost:3000'

The action installs dependencies and, when configured, builds and starts the application before running Cypress. The example uses v7, the major version in Cypress’s guide dated October 3, 2026; action releases and hosted runner images change, so check the current GitHub Actions guide before adopting or pinning a version. Use a specific release tag if your project wants tighter control than a moving major-version tag.

The action’s browser input selects a browser. Cypress documents Chrome, Firefox, and Edge on GitHub-hosted Ubuntu and Windows runners, and Safari on macOS runners; exact runner images and browser versions can change. Consult current runner documentation when browser availability or version is part of your test requirement.

Record runs and protect the record key

For a basic single-machine run, Cypress Cloud is not required. If you want recorded run results and the Cloud debugging context, configure the project for Cypress Cloud and pass --record with a record key (or configure the equivalent action inputs). Supply the key as the operating-system environment variable CYPRESS_RECORD_KEY, stored in your CI provider’s secrets or masked variables. Cypress says this key is not read from cypress.env.json or the configuration file’s env block.

  • Do not commit the key into workflow files or expose it in logs.
  • Grant the secret only to jobs that need to record.
  • Keep recording optional for workflows that only need a pass/fail test result.

See the CI overview and CLI reference for recording setup and command options.

Run specs in parallel across CI machines

Cypress’s documented --parallel mode requires a run recorded to Cypress Cloud. Configure multiple CI workers to join the same recorded run; Cloud distributes spec files among available machines. Merely adding separate jobs without the shared recorded-run configuration does not make those jobs participate in Cypress’s documented parallelization.

For GitHub Actions, Cypress documents splitting installation and build from matrix worker jobs, then preserving and downloading the built artifact so each worker tests the same application output. Keep the Cypress version, browser, and build artifact consistent across workers; otherwise differences in runner images or rebuilt output can make results incomparable. The exact matrix and artifact configuration should follow the GitHub Actions guide and Cypress Cloud parallelization documentation.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Parallelism trades CI capacity and Cloud recording requirements for potentially shorter elapsed time. There is no universal worker count or speedup: compare the wall-clock time and runner cost for your own suite rather than treating illustrative configurations as performance guarantees.

Choose a runner environment

A provider’s native runner is usually the simplest starting point. A Cypress Docker image can make the Linux environment and included browsers more controlled, which helps when changes to the provider’s Node.js or browser images would otherwise affect results. Choose an image tag that matches the project’s Node.js and browser needs, and verify tag availability and versions when implementing.

On GitHub Actions, a job that specifies a container image must use a Linux runner. Cypress also calls out a non-root user setting for Firefox in its container example. Follow the GitHub Actions container guidance when using that combination.

CI-only configuration can be set through CYPRESS_-prefixed environment variables. Cypress’s overview includes examples such as CYPRESS_BASE_URL and CYPRESS_REPORTER, as well as timeout and viewport settings. Prefer environment-specific values in CI rather than hard-coding machine-specific assumptions into the project configuration.

Compare the practical setup choices

Choice Useful when Trade-off
Provider-native runner You want the fewest environment layers and the provider already supplies a suitable browser. Runner and browser images can change; check current image versions.
Cypress Docker image You want a more controlled Linux environment with Cypress dependencies and browsers. You own the image-tag choice and must account for container-specific requirements.
Serial execution The suite fits the available job time and you want a straightforward run. All specs execute without Cypress Cloud’s cross-machine distribution.
Cypress Cloud parallelization You need documented distribution of specs among CI workers. Requires a recorded Cloud run and additional CI worker capacity; measure cost and elapsed time for your suite.
Maintained GitHub Action You want an action to handle install, build/start orchestration, and test execution. Action inputs and versions need to be kept current.
Direct CLI workflow You want to own the individual install, readiness, and CLI steps. You must implement and maintain server orchestration yourself.

These are setup trade-offs, not benchmark results. The options and provider details are covered in the Cypress overview and its GitHub Actions guide.

Troubleshoot common CI failures

  • Tests fail to visit the app immediately after startup: the server may not be ready when Cypress begins. Add a readiness check such as the action’s wait-on, and verify the URL and port match the server.
  • The server exits before tests finish: ensure the start command runs as a managed long-lived process in the action or workflow, not as a short-lived build step.
  • Cloud recording is rejected: verify the project is configured for Cloud and the correct CYPRESS_RECORD_KEY is available as a CI secret. Do not put it in the Cypress config env block or cypress.env.json.
  • Parallel workers do not distribute specs: confirm the run is recorded, workers join the same run, and parallel mode is enabled. Cypress’s documented parallelization depends on Cypress Cloud.
  • Workers behave differently: make sure jobs use the same built artifact and compatible Cypress, browser, and container versions; runner image changes can introduce differences.
  • A container job cannot start on the selected runner: GitHub Actions job containers require Linux runners. For Firefox in Cypress’s container example, follow its non-root-user configuration guidance.
  • The requested browser is unavailable: check the current browser inventory for the selected hosted runner image or choose a compatible Cypress Docker image.

Or skip the browser setup

If the job you need is capturing a website screenshot rather than running application tests, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its one-request API returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; it is not a replacement for Cypress test execution.

For example, request a screenshot of your deployed app from CI with cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Replace the target URL with your application URL and provide an API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie/consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
