End-to-end (E2E) testing checks whether a small number of important user journeys work across the running application—from the interface through backend services and relevant integrations. Use it for critical, high-risk workflows, not as a substitute for unit, component, API, or integration tests. A dependable strategy pairs selective browser journeys with isolated test data, user-facing assertions, and waits for conditions rather than guessed delays.
What end-to-end testing verifies
An E2E test exercises an application as a user would, typically in a browser, and checks that its connected parts work together. A journey may cross the rendered interface, application logic, backend, and third-party services. Cypress describes this scope as testing from browser through backend and integrations: Cypress testing types.
The value is broad confidence in a real workflow. The trade-off is that a failure can have several possible causes, and the test needs more infrastructure and setup than a narrow check. E2E tests tell you that a journey failed; they are not always the fastest way to pinpoint which function or contract is responsible.
Which workflows belong in E2E tests?
Start with a Critical User Journey (CUJ): a user’s important goal and the tasks needed to achieve it. Google recommends documenting these journeys and checking them end to end: Google’s testing guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Good candidates
- Authentication: a user can sign in and reach the expected authenticated experience.
- Purchasing: a buyer can complete the important purchase path and see the resulting state.
- State that must persist: information entered or changed on one screen appears correctly on another.
- Release smoke checks: a small set of critical workflows still works before deployment.
These are examples Cypress identifies as common E2E scenarios: Cypress testing types. Adapt them to the product’s actual users and risks. A rarely used screen with low impact may not justify a costly full-stack browser journey; a broken payment or sign-in path may.
Choose by risk, not by screen count
- Write down the user goal and the shortest realistic path to complete it.
- Identify the failures with the greatest user or business impact, including broken integrations and lost or incorrect state.
- Keep only the checks that need the whole application to establish confidence in that journey.
- Test individual rules and edge cases at narrower levels where failures are easier to localize.
Avoid encoding every business rule or possible state in browser journeys. Broad tests often provide less precise failure information and bring more setup and dependency costs than focused checks. This division follows the scope and dependency trade-offs described by Cypress and Google.
How E2E fits with other test levels
The test pyramid is a useful starting point, not a required quota: build a broad base of focused checks, then use a smaller number of full-application journeys for critical flows and high-risk areas. The UK Home Office guidance says teams should adapt the shape to context, including system complexity, prototypes, safety-critical needs, and resource constraints: UK Home Office test pyramid guidance.

| Test level | What it covers | Best use | Typical trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unit or component | Individual logic or a mounted component | Focused behavior, edge cases, and component states | Passing checks do not establish that all application layers work together |
| API or integration | Endpoints or interactions among a smaller group of real units | Contracts, integration seams, and faster test-state preparation | May require a running backend, but generally involves fewer dependencies than full E2E |
| End to end | A user-visible journey through the integrated application | Critical journeys and high-risk behavior across system boundaries | Needs browser and backend infrastructure; failures can be harder to diagnose |
Cypress distinguishes component, API, and E2E testing along these lines: Cypress testing types. Google likewise notes that integration tests can run with fewer dependencies in smaller environments than full E2E tests: Google’s testing guidance.

How to make browser tests more reliable
Assert the rendered experience
Check what a user can see or do, using user-facing selectors and explicit interface contracts rather than internal function names or styling classes. Assertions tied to implementation details can break during refactoring even when the user experience is unchanged. Playwright’s guidance recommends testing user-visible behavior: Playwright best practices.

Give tests independent state
Set up each test so it has its own required data and browser state, including storage and cookies. A test that relies on another test’s login, records, or cleanup can fail unpredictably when run alone, reordered, or in parallel. Independent setup also makes it easier to tell which scenario caused a failure. See Playwright best practices.
Wait for conditions, not elapsed time
Prefer an assertion that retries until the expected UI state appears over a fixed sleep or an immediate check. A hard-coded delay can be unnecessarily slow on a fast run and still too short on a slow one. Playwright’s web-first assertions wait for conditions, such as a newly displayed alert: Playwright best practices.

Plan execution, reliability, and cost
Full-stack browser tests require more coordination than isolated checks. Before adding a journey, account for the application and backend availability, the data it needs, any relevant third-party dependencies, and where the browser run will execute in CI. Keep the suite selective so that broad coverage does not make feedback needlessly slow or failures difficult to investigate. Cypress notes the setup, execution, and maintenance burden of E2E; Google notes the smaller dependency footprint integration checks can have: Cypress and Google.
- When a journey fails: inspect the user-visible failure and the backend or integration state before assuming the browser assertion itself is at fault.
- When failures cascade: look for shared data, cookies, or storage; restore independent setup and cleanup.
- When runs are slow: check whether a lower-level test can cover the rule, and keep browser coverage for the workflow that needs the whole stack.
- When failures are intermittent: replace timing guesses with condition-based assertions and remove hidden dependencies between scenarios.
Capture a page screenshot without turning it into an E2E test
A screenshot can help inspect a rendered page or retain visual evidence, but capturing an image by itself does not verify a complete user journey. Use browser-driven E2E checks for actions and outcomes across the application; use a screenshot capture when an image of the page is the specific output you need.
DIY: capture with a browser
For a manual check, open the target page in a browser, reproduce the relevant state, and use the browser’s screenshot or print-to-PDF controls. For repeatable automated journeys, use a browser-testing framework and assert the resulting user-visible state rather than treating an image alone as proof of functionality.

Common E2E testing problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to change |
|---|---|---|
| A check passes alone but fails in the suite | It depends on state created or left behind by another test | Give it independent data, storage, and cookies, and make setup explicit |
| A test fails intermittently around a page update | It checks too early or relies on a fixed delay | Wait for and assert the expected rendered condition |
| A failure is difficult to localize | The browser journey contains too many rules or system behaviors | Move focused logic and contracts to unit, component, or API/integration checks; retain the critical journey |
| CI runs need substantial setup | The test depends on the browser, backend, data, or external integrations | Make those dependencies and state preparation explicit, and reduce full-stack checks to high-value flows |
These fixes align with the independence and assertion recommendations in Playwright best practices and the scope and infrastructure distinctions in Cypress testing types.
