In Puppeteer 25.3.0, ConsoleMessageType is a union of 19 literal strings, including log, error, warn, table, and trace. To read a page’s message type, listen for its console event and call msg.type(). The exact spelling can vary by Puppeteer version: a Puppeteer Core 21.6.1 declaration uses warning where the 25.3.0 reference uses warn.
What values does Puppeteer ConsoleMessageType include?
The Puppeteer 25.3.0 API reference defines these 19 supported message-type strings:
logdebuginfoerrorwarndirdirxmltabletraceclearstartGroupstartGroupCollapsedendGroupassertprofileprofileEndcounttimeEndverbose
These are literal values in Puppeteer’s type union. They are not all severity levels: table, trace, clear, and the group values describe other console operations.
How do you get a console message type in Puppeteer?
Listen to the page’s console event. Puppeteer dispatches a ConsoleMessage object for the event, and its type() method returns the message type.

page.on('console', msg => {
console.log(msg.type(), msg.text());
});
This example logs both the type and text. The message object also provides args() for argument handles, location() for source location, and stackTrace() for stack locations. The constructor is marked internal; receive these objects through the page event rather than creating them directly.
Is a console message type the same as severity?
No. Treat ConsoleMessage.type() as Puppeteer’s message-type value, not as a universal severity classification. For example, table and startGroup identify console operations, while Chromium protocol declarations represent message source and severity as separate fields. Do not assume Puppeteer’s type union maps one-to-one to a protocol severity enum.

Why does one version say warn and another say warning?
The Puppeteer 25.3.0 reference lists warn. A captured Puppeteer Core 21.6.1 declaration lists warning. The available versioned evidence establishes that spelling difference, but not when or why it changed.
If code compares message types against exact strings, check the declaration for the version actually installed in your project. Avoid copying a literal from documentation for a different release without checking compatibility.

How should you use the returned type?
Use the value to branch on the message category recognized by your installed Puppeteer version. Keep message type, message text, arguments, source location, and stack trace as distinct pieces of information; inspect whichever is needed for logging or debugging rather than treating the type alone as a full diagnosis.
If behavior depends on a particular literal, verify the installed package’s types during upgrades. This is especially important for the warn/warning spelling difference; do not assume that every version accepts both spellings.
