To set a cookie in current Puppeteer, call browser.setCookie() or browserContext.setCookie() with an object containing name and value. Add only the optional fields your test requires, such as domain, path, expires, or sameSite. The page-level Page.setCookie() API is marked obsolete in current Puppeteer documentation.
Set a cookie with Puppeteer
Use the browser or the context whose cookie storage you want to modify. The minimal documented shape requires a cookie name and value:

});The BrowserContext.setCookie() reference documents a variadic CookieData argument and a Promise<void> return. Browser methods are shortcuts for the default context; contexts isolate storage such as cookies and local storage. Choose the context associated with the page or test that should receive the cookie.

Choose CookieParam fields for the cookie you need
Puppeteer’s CookieParam reference, displaying version 25.12.0 when accessed on October 3, 2026, lists the following fields. Only name and value are required; the rest are optional and should reflect the target cookie’s scope and purpose.

Scope: domain, path, and URL
Set scope deliberately. Use domain and path when you need to state those attributes directly. Alternatively, url identifies the request URI associated with setting the cookie and can influence default values. A value suitable for one site or test may not suit another; do not copy a localhost scope into production authentication setup without checking the target cookie’s requirements.

Lifetime: expiry or session
Set expires when the test needs a specific expiration date. If you omit it, Puppeteer treats the cookie as a session cookie.
Visibility and security attributes
httpOnly, secure, and sameSite represent cookie attributes, not optional decorations to set identically for every test. Configure them to match the behavior being tested. A cookie’s presence in browser storage alone does not establish that a site will accept it for a particular request or treat the session as authenticated.

Partitioning and browser-specific attributes
Use partitionKey only when your test concerns a partitioned cookie and its site context. The documented browser interpretation differs between Chrome and Firefox. The reference identifies priority and sourceScheme as Chrome-only options; do not assume those fields apply across browser engines.
Documentation example and production caution
Puppeteer’s cookie guide demonstrates two localhost cookies, including settings such as expires: -1, httpOnly: false, secure: false, and sourceScheme: 'NonSecure'. Those values illustrate the guide’s example; they are not universal defaults for production or authentication cookies. Match attributes to the cookie and environment you are testing.

The current Page.setCookie() reference marks that page-level API obsolete and directs users to Browser.setCookie() or BrowserContext.setCookie(). Prefer those browser- or context-level methods in new code.
Troubleshoot cookie setup
- The call rejects or the cookie is not set: check that both
nameandvalueare present, then review the optional fields against the target cookie’s scope and environment. - The page does not appear to receive the cookie: verify that you set it in the same browser context used by the page. Separate contexts isolate cookies and other storage.
- The cookie applies to the wrong URLs: review
domainandpath, or use the relevanturland account for its role in deriving defaults. - A cookie is missing after the browser session: check whether you omitted
expires; omission creates a session cookie. - A browser ignores an option: check its documented support.
priorityandsourceSchemeare Chrome-only, and partition-key interpretation differs between Chrome and Firefox. - The site still treats the visitor as unauthenticated: setting a cookie does not guarantee the site will accept it or that it is sufficient for authentication. Confirm the cookie attributes and the application’s expected session behavior.
