For failed tests in cypress run, Cypress already captures a screenshot by default and saves it under cypress/screenshots. To make failure evidence more useful, confirm the app is in the state you need, add a named cy.screenshot() after a meaningful assertion, and use retry artifacts, video, or Test Replay when a still image cannot explain the failure. In cypress open, failure screenshots are not automatic.

Check Cypress’s automatic failure screenshots first

The screenshotOnRunFailure configuration option defaults to true. During cypress run, Cypress takes a screenshot when a test fails. The default folder is cypress/screenshots; you can change it with screenshotsFolder. These settings determine whether and where screenshots are saved, not whether they contain enough context to diagnose a bug. Cypress: Capture screenshots and videos · Cypress: Configuration

Failure screenshots are not captured automatically on test failure in cypress open. If you are investigating interactively, add a manual capture where it will help, or use the runner’s other debugging tools.

Make artifact retention intentional

trashAssetsBeforeRuns defaults to clearing the downloads, screenshots, and videos folders before a cypress run. If you need artifacts retained across runs, account for this cleanup behavior in your configuration and CI artifact handling. Avoid assuming an old screenshot will still be present after the next run. Cypress: Configuration

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Add a screenshot at a useful point in the test

A manual screenshot can show the app immediately after a significant transition—for example, once a save confirmation is visible. Assert the state before capturing it so the image is tied to an explicit condition rather than an assumed pause.

cy.contains('Saved').should('be.visible');
cy.screenshot('saved-state');

This example is illustrative. Choose a name that describes the state or step, and place the capture where it answers a debugging question: what did the UI look like after the action or assertion that matters? Cypress documents cy.screenshot() options and callbacks in its Cypress.Screenshot API.

Choose the capture scope deliberately

  • Viewport: captures the application viewport. Use it when the relevant control or error is currently visible.
  • Full page: captures from the top to the bottom of the page. Cypress scrolls and stitches the result; fixed or sticky elements can therefore appear more than once.
  • Runner: includes the browser viewport and Cypress Command Log. Failure screenshots are coerced to runner capture, which can help retain test-run context.

See the Cypress.Screenshot API for capture options and behavior.

Stabilize the app before capturing

A screenshot is only a still image. It can be misleading if the page is still loading data, rendering asynchronously, or animating when the capture happens. Cypress describes screenshot coordination as best-effort: the app state can change before the image is taken, and the Command Log renders asynchronously, so the displayed error may not appear in the still image. • Assert that the relevant UI state is visible or otherwise correct before taking a manual screenshot.
  • Control test data and wait for the specific application state needed; avoid relying on an arbitrary delay when an assertion can express the condition.
  • If the failure depends on timing or sequence, inspect video or Test Replay rather than expecting one image to explain the run.

For visual snapshots, Cypress likewise cautions that captures taken during rendering, animation, or data loading can represent an intermediate state and cause false failures. Cypress: Visual testing

Use retries to understand intermittent failures

When retries are enabled, Cypress can save screenshots for failed attempts; filenames include attempt suffixes such as (attempt 2). Compare the attempt images and inspect the underlying error to see whether the same failure recurs or the outcome varies. Retries are diagnostic evidence, not a correction: a passing later attempt does not explain why an earlier one failed. Cypress allows retry settings for runMode and openMode to be configured separately. Cypress: Test retries · Cypress: Configuration

Find the artifact path without guessing

Cypress mirrors spec paths under its artifact directories, so deeply nested screenshot paths can vary with the spec and configuration. If another step in your workflow needs the exact file location, use the resolved path available through the cy.screenshot() callback or the after:screenshot and after:spec Node events rather than hard-coding a guessed path. Know when you need visual comparison instead

cy.screenshot() captures an image; it does not compare the image with an approved baseline. Cypress states in its Visual testing in Cypress guide: “Cypress does not perform image comparison itself. The built-in cy.screenshot() command captures images but does not compare them.”

If your goal is to detect unintended visual changes, evaluate a visual-testing integration rather than adding more failure screenshots. Compare candidates on Cypress compatibility, browser and viewport coverage, baseline storage, masking dynamic regions, review workflow, and CI fit. Cypress documents integrations including Applitools, Chromatic, Percy, and Sauce Labs Visual; the documentation alone does not establish one as the best choice for every workflow. Cypress: Visual testing

Troubleshoot missing or unhelpful screenshots

  • No automatic screenshot in the interactive runner: failure screenshots do not happen automatically in cypress open. Add a manual cy.screenshot() where useful.
  • No screenshot after cypress run failure: check whether screenshotOnRunFailure is enabled, and confirm the configured screenshotsFolder and artifact-retention behavior.
  • The image shows an intermediate or wrong state: assert the target state first and control data or asynchronous rendering; screenshot timing is best-effort.
  • The Command Log does not show the error: it may not have rendered before the capture. Use video or Test Replay for execution sequence and context.
  • A full-page image repeats a header or other element: Cypress stitches the page while scrolling, so fixed and sticky elements may be repeated.
  • Only one retry image is present or names differ: review the retry configuration and attempt-specific filenames; do not treat retries as a fix for the test.
  • A screenshot file is missing from a later run: check whether the default pre-run cleanup removed it and retain artifacts explicitly if needed.

Or skip the browser setup

For a website screenshot outside Cypress’s test-run artifacts, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. One GET request can return an image or PDF; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with verdict and billing information returned in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
