Call await page.authenticate({ username, password }) before navigating to a URL protected by HTTP authentication. The method applies to that Puppeteer Page; it is not a browser-wide setting and is not documented as a way to fill in a website’s ordinary login form.
Set HTTP authentication credentials in Puppeteer
Pass an object with string-valued username and password properties to page.authenticate(), and await it before opening the protected page:

Use it before the protected request
Set authentication before page.goto() so the credentials are available when the page makes its HTTP authentication challenge. This configures the Page you call it on, not every tab in the browser.

Disable authentication
Pass null to turn off authentication for that Page:
await page.authenticate(null);HTTP authentication is not an HTML login form
page.authenticate() provides credentials for HTTP authentication challenges. It is not documented as a method for typing into an application’s username and password fields or completing a form-based sign-in. Those flows require interacting with the page’s form and whatever session or authentication process the application uses.

Proxy authentication and separate credentials
Puppeteer’s method can handle HTTP authentication challenges from a website or an HTTP proxy. A supplementary, non-official Puppeteer Guide notes an important limitation: one page.authenticate() call cannot supply one credential pair for a proxy challenge and a different pair for a website challenge at the same time. Its suggested arrangement is to have a local proxy manage the upstream proxy credentials, leaving page.authenticate() available for the website’s credentials. Treat this as practitioner guidance, not an official API guarantee.
Performance considerations
The Puppeteer Page API says request interception is enabled behind the scenes to implement authentication and that this might affect performance. The documentation does not quantify the impact, so there is no supported percentage or timing estimate to apply to your workload.

Troubleshoot authentication failures
- The site still rejects the credentials: Confirm that the endpoint uses HTTP authentication and that the username and password are correct. The API accepts string properties named
usernameandpassword; it does not establish how an application’s separate login form works. - The credentials seem to arrive too late: Await
page.authenticate()before callingpage.goto()for the protected URL. - A proxy works, but the site does not, or vice versa: Check whether the proxy and website demand different credential pairs. A single call cannot express both pairs simultaneously according to the supplementary guide; route proxy authentication through a local proxy if that architecture fits your setup.
- Page behavior slows after enabling authentication: Request interception is part of the documented implementation and may affect performance. Puppeteer publishes no measured impact; compare your own flow with and without authentication where that is safe and relevant.

Does Puppeteer’s authenticate method work with a normal website login form?
It is documented for HTTP authentication challenges, not for filling in an application’s HTML login form.

Can one Page use separate credentials for a proxy and a website?
A supplementary, non-official Puppeteer guide says one call cannot express separate credential pairs for both challenges simultaneously.
