To create an isolated browser session in Puppeteer, call browser.createBrowserContext(), then create pages with context.newPage(). Cookies and local storage are separate from other contexts, and closing the context closes its pages. This is storage isolation within a browser instance—not a promise of anonymity or a separate browser process.
What a Puppeteer BrowserContext isolates
A BrowserContext groups pages and browser-level session state. Puppeteer’s guide says cookies and local storage are not shared between contexts; the API reference also specifies that cookies and cache are not shared. In Chrome, non-default contexts are incognito contexts. See the browser management guide and createBrowserContext() API reference.
Isolation applies between contexts, not between pages in the same context. Pages in one context share its session state, and a popup opened by a page belongs to that page’s context. The documentation does not claim that contexts provide anonymity, prevent fingerprinting, or run in separate browser processes.
Create and use an isolated session
This example launches a browser, creates a non-default context, opens a page in that context, and cleans up both resources even if navigation or automation fails:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
const context = await browser.createBrowserContext();
try {
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
// Run this session's automation in the context.
} finally {
await context.close();
await browser.close();
}
The important detail is creating the page from context. Calling browser.newPage() instead creates a page in the default context, so it would not use the newly created isolated session. The documented workflow and methods are covered in the browser management guide and API reference.
Choose the right context for the task
| Need | Use | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Share session state among related pages or popups | Pages in the same context | They share that context’s session state; a page’s popup remains in its context. |
| Keep cookies and storage separate from another session | Create another context with browser.createBrowserContext() |
The contexts have separate cookies and local storage; the API reference also states that cache is not shared. |
| Return to the default browser context | browser.newPage() |
The page is created in the default context, not in a separately created context. |
| Clean up a group of pages together | Close the non-default context with context.close() |
Its associated pages close with it. The default context cannot be closed. |
Puppeteer documents the default context and context listing through browser.browserContexts(). A newly launched browser has one default context; use a separately created context when you need context-level teardown.

Close contexts and clean up reliably
Call context.close() when the isolated session is finished. It closes the pages associated with that context. You cannot close the default browser context, so create a non-default context for work that needs this cleanup boundary. Use try/finally so cleanup runs after a navigation or automation error; then close the browser if your program owns it. The BrowserContext.close() reference documents the close behavior.
Troubleshoot common context mistakes
- State appears to be shared. Check whether both pages were created in the same context. Create a distinct context for each session that needs separate storage.
- The new page is not isolated. If it was created with
browser.newPage(), it belongs to the default context. Usecontext.newPage()instead. - Closing the default context fails. The default context cannot be closed. Create a non-default context and close that context when its work is done.
- Other pages remain open after cleanup. Confirm that those pages belong to the context you closed. Closing one context closes its associated pages, not pages in other contexts.
- You expect anonymity or process-level separation. The cited Puppeteer documentation establishes storage separation and calls Chrome’s non-default contexts incognito; it does not promise anonymity, fingerprinting protection, or a separate browser process.
Version notes
The official search results for the main context method and class reference reported Puppeteer API documentation version 25.12.0; the close-method page reported version 25.9.0. Documentation versions can differ, so check the live method reference when matching code to a specific Puppeteer release: createBrowserContext() and BrowserContext.close().
