For sensitive data, Cypress documents exclusions for values in password fields, certain credit-card fields, and hidden inputs before information is sent to its AI model. That is a field-specific safeguard—not a guarantee that every sensitive value in an application is redacted.
How does Cypress Studio generate selectors?
Studio automatically selects a locator for elements you interact with, target with an assertion, or receive in an AI recommendation. Cypress says its selector strategy aims for uniqueness, readability, and performance. The default preference order is:

This is a preference order, not a promise that Studio will use the first available attribute. Cypress may skip a candidate or combine selectors if that is necessary to make the locator unique. A selector that is unique today can still become brittle if the application changes its markup; review generated selectors rather than treating them as guaranteed stable. Can I change which selectors Cypress Studio prefers?
Yes. Configure selectorPriority with Cypress.ElementSelector.defaults(). For example, a project could put semantic or accessibility attributes first:

Choose attributes that are meaningful and stable in your app. A role or accessible label can make a test reflect user-facing semantics; an automatically generated ID or frequently changing class may be a poor priority. Cypress labels this API as under active development, so check the Element Selector API reference for behavior matching the Cypress version your project uses.
Does Cypress Studio AI send passwords or credit-card values to the AI model?
Cypress says values from these DOM field types are excluded before data is sent to the AI model:

The field structure and surrounding context may still be used to generate recommendations; Cypress says only the values are excluded. This describes Cypress’s product documentation, not an independent security assessment. See the Studio AI guide and Cypress Cloud documentation on AI features.
Does Cypress redact all sensitive data?
No blanket redaction guarantee is established by the documented exclusions. They cover the listed field cases, not arbitrary visible text, custom fields, personal information elsewhere in the page, or every secret-bearing part of application state. Studio AI also does not inspect application source code, business logic, or backend rules; its recommendations are based on observed UI changes.

Keep secrets out of literal cy.prompt text
The DOM-field exclusions do not protect a secret that you write literally into a natural-language cy.prompt step string. Cypress recommends using placeholders for sensitive values and says placeholder values are not sent to the AI model. See the Cypress cy.prompt documentation.
Controls for AI recommendations
A user can disable Studio AI for an individual session. Cypress Cloud organization admins or owners can also disable AI capabilities in Cloud settings. These controls are separate from the field-based exclusions; use the applicable control if AI recommendations should not be active for a session or organization.

What does Studio AI require, and what are its limits?
The Studio AI guide lists Cypress 15.11.0 or later and a linked Cypress Cloud project as requirements for AI recommendations. Studio’s recording and manual assertion features work without Cloud; AI recommendations require Cloud.
- Studio AI is for end-to-end testing. Component testing and Cucumber-style tests are listed as unsupported.
- Multi-origin recording, iFrames, and Shadow DOM are listed as unsupported.
- Animations or transitions can introduce intermediate DOM changes and reduce recommendation quality.
- Large pages can exceed context limits.
- Studio AI does not crawl an application automatically; it observes interactions and resulting UI changes.
These requirements and limitations come from Cypress’s product documentation and may change. Confirm them against the guide for your installed version before adopting the feature.

How should a team review generated selectors and assertions?
- Check uniqueness. Confirm that the locator identifies the intended element and not multiple matches.
- Prefer durable meaning. Use stable test attributes or appropriate semantic attributes rather than relying on positional selectors when practical.
- Inspect the assertion. AI recommendations reflect observed UI changes, not knowledge of the app’s business rules. Verify that the assertion expresses the intended behavior.
- Consider privacy boundaries. Check whether sensitive information appears in ordinary visible text or custom fields not covered by the documented exclusions, and never type secrets into literal prompt text.
- Account for unsupported UI. If the flow uses an iframe, Shadow DOM, multi-origin recording, or unsupported test style, do not assume Studio AI can capture it correctly.
