Choose tests by the failure you need to catch: use fast logic and component tests for isolated behavior, API or integration tests for backend contracts, and a small set of browser end-to-end (E2E) tests for the user journeys where a failure would block activation, revenue, or essential product use. Run them repeatedly in a controlled environment and CI; add deployed smoke checks where they provide useful coverage. There is no evidence-based universal test ratio for startups.

Choose the least costly test that catches the risk

Different test scopes answer different questions. Start by identifying what could break and what evidence would demonstrate the failure, then choose the narrowest credible test. Cypress’s documentation describes the distinctions and trade-offs among E2E, component, and API testing.

Test scope What it checks Useful when
Logic or unit A focused rule or function’s inputs and outputs, without launching a browser. You need to cover validation, calculations, or other isolated rules across many cases.
Component A UI component’s behavior in isolation. You need quick feedback on a component or interaction that can be tested without the whole application.
API or integration HTTP endpoints and backend behavior, including service contracts. You need to check request/response behavior without simulating a user through rendered pages.
Browser E2E The application through a browser; a journey may span UI, backend, and third-party integrations. You need confidence that important screens and state transitions work together as a user experiences them.

A passing component suite does not establish that the integrated application works. Conversely, using browser tests for every edge case adds setup and maintenance where a more focused test may be sufficient. Combine scopes to answer distinct questions rather than aiming for a prescribed pyramid or percentage.

Choose browser journeys that matter to the business

Use E2E tests for a few paths where a regression has a direct user or business consequence. Cypress lists authentication, purchasing, persistence across screens, smoke tests, and system checks among common E2E scenarios.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Activation: signup or login, including the transition into the product.
  • Core product use: a primary create or edit action and the result a user should see.
  • Revenue: purchasing, if the application sells through the tested flow.
  • Cross-screen state: data that should remain available after navigation or reload.

Cover numerous validation cases and unusual inputs at logic, component, or API level. Keep browser tests focused on demonstrating that the key pieces work together, not on reproducing every possible state through the UI.

Run most tests in an environment you control

A local or dedicated test server, repeatable seed data, and a reliable way to reset state make tests easier to reproduce and failures easier to investigate. Cypress describes the benefits of controlling the app and its data during testing in its guide to testing an app.

A smaller set of smoke tests against a deployed app can complement the controlled suite. External websites and services can change, run experiments, or block automation, making tests against them brittle. Stub or use a controlled test integration when the purpose is to test your own behavior; check a real third-party service when its live behavior is itself the risk you need to cover.

Make tests independent and easy to diagnose

Each test should establish its own preconditions, run alone, and pass regardless of execution order. Cypress identifies test dependencies as a source of flakiness and describes isolation that clears browser context and test state between E2E cases. Its guidance states: “Best Practice: Tests should always be able to be run independently from one another and still pass.” This is a vendor recommendation, not an independent empirical finding; see Cypress’s test organization guidance.

For browser tests, prefer selectors based on accessible, user-visible behavior over selectors coupled to styling or internal implementation. Playwright’s best-practice guidance recommends testing what users see and avoiding implementation details. When failures occur only in CI, retain useful failure artifacts, such as traces, where supported by the chosen setup.

Start CI with a stable baseline

For Playwright, the CI guide organizes setup around browser-capable agents, installing Playwright and browser dependencies, and running tests. It recommends one worker in CI by default for stability and reproducibility; teams can consider parallelization or sharding as their infrastructure permits.

  1. Make a CI agent capable of running the required browsers.
  2. Install the test package and browser dependencies in the job.
  3. Run the suite and make its outcome visible as a routine pull-request check.
  4. Increase concurrency or distribute work across jobs only when available infrastructure and suite duration justify it.

Start with required checks that give developers actionable feedback on pull requests. Keep a small smoke suite close to deployment and run broader or slower tests at a cadence that fits their cost and the risk they cover. This is a practical way to grow coverage, not a published startup benchmark.

Pick a framework against your team’s constraints

There is no universal winner established by the available official documentation. Cypress documents E2E, component, API, and accessibility workflows; Playwright documents CI setup and user-oriented testing practices. These materials help identify evaluation criteria, but they are not a neutral, controlled head-to-head benchmark.

If a workflow needs a captured page image or PDF as part of a check, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; see the API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server includes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card.
