Short answer: Cypress puts local debugging around its interactive Test Runner and Command Log; Playwright offers UI Mode, Inspector, and Trace Viewer. Both can expose what happened around a failed action. The better fit depends on whether your team wants to inspect a running application through a command log, explore a test timeline, step through code, or diagnose saved CI evidence.
How Cypress debugging works locally
Inspect commands and application state in open mode
Cypress open mode runs specs in an interactive Test Runner. Its Command Log lists test commands and hooks, and selecting or hovering over commands can reveal snapshots and console details for the application or component at that point. Pin a command to keep its snapshot visible while you inspect it. Some actions, such as clicking or changing input, have before-and-after snapshots. Cypress documents open mode and the Command Log.
The log also records page events such as loads, URL changes, form submissions, and XHR/fetch requests. When a test uses cy.intercept(), stubs, or spies, the instrument panel can show routes, stubbed responses, spies, and function calls. That makes the workflow useful when the question is, “What did this command do to the page, and what request or event occurred around it?”
Pause execution and inspect code
Cypress commands are queued and execute later, so a debugger statement placed after queued commands may not behave like ordinary sequential JavaScript. Cypress’s debugging guide describes using .debug() and browser DevTools; its IDE integration guide also covers debugger, cy.pause(), and browser DevTools. Use these when a snapshot alone cannot explain the code path or runtime values.

How Playwright debugging works locally
Explore tests in UI Mode
Launch UI Mode from the project with npx playwright test --ui. It supports exploring, running, watching, and debugging tests, with filters for test name, project, tag, or result. Its timeline lets you step through actions and inspect image snapshots; the Actions tab shows locators and durations, and DOM snapshots can be opened separately. UI Mode also presents source highlighting, errors, browser and test console output, and a Network tab with request and response details. See the Playwright UI Mode documentation. That page is under Playwright’s /docs/next path, so check the documentation matching your installed release if exact version behavior matters.
Step through execution with Inspector
The Playwright Inspector is a GUI for stepping through tests, selecting or editing locators, and reviewing actionability logs. Run npx playwright test --debug to open the Inspector and a headed browser. In this mode, the documented default timeout is zero. You can also target a specific test and line, choose a configured browser project, or insert await page.pause() where you want execution to stop. Playwright also points to its VS Code extension for debugging. The exact command options and workflow are in the Playwright debugging documentation.

Which evidence helps with which failure?
| Debugging question | Cypress route | Playwright route |
|---|---|---|
| What did the page look like when the action ran? | Hover or pin a Command Log entry to inspect its snapshot; some actions have before-and-after snapshots. | Use UI Mode’s timeline and DOM snapshots to inspect the action context. |
| Did a request or response cause the failure? | Inspect recorded XHR/fetch activity and, when configured, cy.intercept() routes, stubs, or spies. |
Use UI Mode’s Network tab for request and response details, or inspect a trace for network requests. |
| Is the issue in the test code or locator? | Use .debug(), cy.pause(), browser DevTools, or the IDE workflow. |
Use Inspector to step, pick or edit locators, review actionability logs, and pause at a chosen line. |
| Did it fail only in CI? | Use Cypress Cloud Test Replay for a recorded run when that workflow is available to your team. | Capture and inspect a Trace Viewer trace, preferably on retry in CI rather than on every test. |
These are different routes to evidence, not proof that one framework is universally faster or easier to debug. Choose based on the evidence your recurring failures need: DOM state, console output, network details, action timing, locator behavior, or source-level stepping.
Diagnosing failures from CI
Playwright traces
Playwright recommends Trace Viewer for CI failures rather than relying only on screenshots or video. A trace provides a timeline, per-action DOM snapshots, network requests, and other run details; it can be opened from the HTML report. The Playwright best-practices guide recommends configuring traces to capture on the first retry in CI and cautions that tracing every test can be performance-heavy. This balances retaining diagnostic evidence against the runtime cost of collecting it.

Cypress Test Replay
Cypress recommends Test Replay in Cypress Cloud for reviewing recorded CI tests. Cypress describes it as an interactive replay with network requests, console output, and DOM snapshots; replay links can be shared without passing around a local trace file. See the Cypress debugging guide and Cypress migration documentation. The workflow involves Cypress Cloud, so check your team’s access and setup before making it the assumed path for every CI failure.
Reduce flaky-test guesswork in either framework
For Cypress, make assertions around required steps and ensure a network request has completed before asserting on a DOM element that depends on it. A failure that appears only in CI may also come from differences between local and CI environments. Those are troubleshooting directions, not guarantees that timing or environment is the cause; inspect the relevant command or recorded run to confirm. Cypress covers these points in its debugging guide.

In Playwright, use actionability logs and the action timeline to determine whether a locator could act when expected, then inspect the surrounding DOM and network evidence. For a CI-only failure, capture a trace on retry so that the run has diagnostic context without tracing every test by default. These workflows help isolate causes; neither feature set establishes a general reduction in debugging time.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose for your team
- Prefer Cypress’s local route if you want the application preview and a command-centered log where snapshots and browser details are tied directly to commands.
- Prefer Playwright’s local route if a test list and timeline, separate DOM snapshots, Network tab, or Inspector-based locator and code stepping better match how your team investigates failures.
- Compare CI workflows before choosing on replay alone. Consider how traces or replays are enabled, retained, opened, shared, and what runtime overhead or service access they require.
- Try a representative failure. Use a real failure from your own CI and check whether the workflow surfaces the evidence your team needs with the least friction. Documentation describes capabilities, not a controlled vendor-neutral comparison of debugging speed.

If the debugging task is to capture a webpage itself rather than diagnose test execution, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. For example, this cURL request saves a screenshot of Stripe as WebP; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options.
