The right Cypress plugin depends on the gap in your end-to-end suite: choose @testing-library/cypress for user-facing DOM queries, cypress-axe for automated accessibility checks, cypress-real-events for native-style interactions, or another focused tool for coverage, filtering, or Gherkin. These packages are not interchangeable, and community plugins are not reviewed by Cypress. Check maintenance and Cypress-version compatibility before installing.
Choose a plugin by the testing gap
| Need | Option | What it adds | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Queries based on roles, labels, or visible text | @testing-library/cypress |
Testing Library’s findBy and findAllBy queries as Cypress commands. |
Import its Cypress commands and confirm current package support and version compatibility. |
| Automated axe-core accessibility checks | cypress-axe |
Accessibility checks using axe-core. | Community-owned; automated results need human review. |
| Managed accessibility reporting | Cypress Accessibility | Reports on unique states reached by E2E and component tests, with results and CI integration. | A paid Cypress Cloud solution, not a community npm plugin. |
| Native-style events such as hover or swipe | cypress-real-events |
Fires native system events for interactions that need them. | Community project; check maintenance and its supported Cypress versions. |
| Gherkin/Cucumber authoring | Community Cucumber preprocessor plugin | Lets a team write tests using Gherkin workflows. | Not officially supported by Cypress and adds workflow complexity. |
| Code coverage | @cypress/code-coverage |
Coverage support for E2E, unit, and full-stack testing. | Typically requires application instrumentation; follow the current guide for your project. |
| Filter specs by title or tags | @cypress/grep |
Filters tests using titles or tags. | The Cypress directory labels it official; confirm current version compatibility. |
There is no evidence here for a universal quality ranking or independently measured plugin performance. Treat the shortlist as a map from testing need to option, then evaluate maintenance, compatibility, setup burden, and how results will be used.
What to check before adding a Cypress plugin
Cypress plugins and integrations are generally independently versioned npm software modules, rather than built-in Cypress features. The Cypress plugin directory distinguishes official entries from community-owned packages and says Cypress does not review community plugins.
- Check the package’s latest release, maintainer activity, issue history, and declared Cypress version range.
- Compare the package’s setup instructions with the version of Cypress in your project; update neither on assumption alone.
- Consider configuration and ongoing maintenance, not just the first test that passes.
- For accessibility tools, plan human review of findings. Automated checks do not establish that an interface works well for people using assistive technology.
The release page listed Cypress 16.1.1, released September 29, 2026, as the latest release checked for this article. Community package compatibility can differ, so verify it against the package metadata and your installed version before upgrading or installing.
#1 Best Overall

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Best fit for user-centered DOM queries: @testing-library/cypress
Testing Library queries help tests locate elements by the way a user encounters them, such as accessible role, label, or text, rather than depending only on implementation-specific selectors. Cypress’s FAQ says you can add @testing-library/cypress and use methods including findByRole, findByLabelText, and findByText.
The integration adds findBy and findAllBy queries to Cypress. Setup requires importing the package’s Cypress commands; consult the Testing Library Cypress integration documentation and confirm the package’s current instructions and compatibility. That documentation was last updated November 26, 2023, so do not assume its setup details have kept pace with every subsequent Cypress release.
Accessibility: distinguish cypress-axe from Cypress Accessibility
Use cypress-axe for community-maintained axe-core checks
cypress-axe is a community option for running axe-core accessibility checks in Cypress tests. The Cypress directory describes it as a community plugin, which means Cypress does not review it. Check the package’s current maintenance and compatibility before adopting it.

Automated accessibility checks can identify some issues, but they are not a substitute for human judgment or assistive-technology testing. Cypress’s guidance specifically recommends complementing automation with human judgment and managing false positives.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Consider Cypress Accessibility for managed reporting
Cypress Accessibility is a distinct hosted solution integrated with Cypress Cloud. Its documentation describes reporting on unique states reached during E2E and component tests, with results and CI integration. It is not the same product as the open-source community plugin cypress-axe; Cypress Accessibility is a paid Cypress Cloud solution.
The Cypress App is free and MIT-licensed, while Cypress Cloud has billing plans and Accessibility and UI Coverage have separate pricing. Check Cypress’s current pricing information for current terms rather than relying on an old price or assuming an included plan feature.

Native-style interactions: cypress-real-events
For a test that needs interactions such as hover or swipe, cypress-real-events is a community-maintained option described in Cypress’s plugin directory as firing native system events. Use it when the behavior under test depends on those events, not simply because the suite can add another dependency. Check its package metadata for compatibility with your Cypress version and review its maintenance status.
Gherkin, coverage, and test filtering
Use a Cucumber preprocessor only when Gherkin helps the team
Cypress confirms that Cucumber-style authoring is possible through a community plugin, but it does not officially support that workflow. Gherkin can be useful when product, QA, and engineering teams share behavior specifications; it also introduces another layer of tooling and workflow complexity. Adopt a preprocessor when that collaboration benefit is real, and verify its current compatibility and setup.

Add code coverage with project-specific instrumentation
@cypress/code-coverage is the plugin identified in Cypress’s FAQ for code coverage across E2E, unit, and full-stack tests. Coverage collection usually requires instrumenting the application, so the exact setup depends on the build and test stack. Use the current Cypress code coverage guide rather than copying configuration from a different project.

Filter runs with @cypress/grep
@cypress/grep is listed as an official plugin for filtering specs by title or tags. It can help target a subset of tests, but check the directory and package metadata for compatibility with the Cypress version you run.
Install and validate a plugin safely
- Define the specific gap: query semantics, accessibility checks, native events, Gherkin, coverage, or filtering.
- Open the relevant package entry in the Cypress plugin directory and establish whether it is official or community-owned.
- Read the package’s current installation instructions, version range, and maintenance signals before changing dependencies.
- Install and configure it in a branch, following the package’s current documented setup; avoid assuming every plugin uses the same import path or configuration.
- Run a small representative test, then the existing suite. Check that the plugin’s output is meaningful and that the added dependency does not make the workflow unnecessarily complex.
Scope: Cypress E2E plugins test web experiences
Cypress supports browser-based E2E testing, including responsive layouts and mobile web views, but it cannot run native mobile apps. A plugin that simulates a mobile-like interaction does not turn Cypress into a native-app testing framework. For native app coverage, choose a tool designed for that target.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a website screenshot rather than extend Cypress E2E tests, ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server, not a Cypress plugin. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; its clean-shot workflow accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes supported consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents.
For example, with cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details. It includes 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Learn about ScreenshotNeo or sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
