Cypress Studio records interactions in your app and turns them into editable Cypress end-to-end test code. Open a spec or suite in the Cypress App’s Open Mode, choose New Test, enter a test name and app URL, then interact with the app. Review the generated commands and add assertions that check the behavior you actually expect. Basic recording and manual assertions do not require Cypress Cloud; Studio AI’s optional assertion recommendations do.

What Cypress Studio records—and what it does not

Studio captures browser actions such as clicking, typing, checking or unchecking a checkbox, and selecting an option. It writes the corresponding Cypress commands into your spec so you can inspect and edit them. A recording is a starting point, not proof that a test is complete: you still need to decide what outcome matters, add meaningful assertions, and run the test.

Studio’s manual recording and editing are distinct from Studio AI. The AI feature can recommend assertions based on visible DOM changes after an interaction. It does not inspect your application code, business logic, or backend rules, so it cannot determine whether a visible result is the right result for your product.

Before you start

  • Use Cypress Studio in the Cypress App’s Open Mode. Studio is default behavior starting with Cypress 15.4.0; older setup instructions to enable the experimentalStudio flag are obsolete. See Cypress’s experimental features history.
  • Studio requires internet access and sourcemaps so it can load test code accurately. Sourcemaps are enabled by default in most Cypress configurations. If Studio reports that it cannot load the test code, check your sourcemap configuration.
  • Use an end-to-end (E2E) test. Studio does not support component tests or Cucumber-style tests.
  • For Studio AI recommendations, use Cypress 15.11.0 or later and a Cypress Cloud account with the project linked. These requirements do not apply to basic recording or manual assertions.

Cypress’s first end-to-end test guide provides introductory context if you have not yet created a Cypress E2E test.

How to record a new test in Cypress Studio

  1. Open the project in the Cypress App. Work in Open Mode, then locate the spec file or suite where the test belongs.
  2. Choose New Test. Enter a descriptive test name and your application URL. Studio creates the test and adds a cy.visit() command for that URL.
  3. Interact with the app. Click buttons or links, type into fields, change checkbox states, and select options as a user would. Studio writes supported interactions into the test as you go.
  4. Pause when you need to inspect. You can pause recording to examine elements in DevTools, then resume when ready.
  5. Review the generated code and selectors. Confirm that commands target the intended controls and that selectors are stable enough for your app.
  6. Add assertions and save. Add checks for the outcomes that matter, edit the code as needed, and save the changes to the spec file.
  7. Run the test. Verify that it passes and that its assertions would fail if the intended behavior broke.

The interactions Studio currently documents are .click(), .type(), .check(), .uncheck(), and .select(). Do not assume that every browser action or application-specific flow will be captured automatically.

How to extend an existing test

  1. Run the spec in the Cypress App.
  2. In the Command Log, hover over the test you want to extend and choose Edit in Studio.
  3. Studio replays the existing commands and enters recording mode after the last command.
  4. Perform the additional interactions and add assertions. Studio appends them after the existing commands.
  5. Inspect the appended code, save, and run the test again.

Because Studio appends actions at the end of the existing test, make sure the app is in the expected state at that point. A flow that depends on a different starting state may be better expressed as a separate test.

Selectors, assertions, and editing

Review the selectors Studio chooses

Studio looks for a unique element using this documented priority: data-cy, data-test, data-testid, data-qa, name, id, class, tag, other attributes, then nth-child. A generated selector is editable code, not a guarantee that the selector matches your team’s conventions or will remain stable. Projects can customize selector priorities with Cypress.ElementSelector.

Add assertions that express intended behavior

Right-click an element in Studio to choose a manual assertion appropriate to its state, such as checking visibility, text, value, or class. Assertions are appended to the test. Prefer checks that describe an observable outcome the user or product requires rather than merely repeating that an interaction occurred.

Edit and save the generated test

The Studio panel supports inline code editing, undo, redo, and reset. Review the source before saving: simplify or replace fragile selectors, remove unintended actions, and make sure each assertion tests the desired outcome. Saving writes the changes into the spec file, where you can continue editing the test as ordinary Cypress code.

When Studio AI helps—and its limits

Studio AI observes DOM changes after recorded interactions and offers suggested assertions for you to review. It can help identify visible changes worth checking, but it cannot tell whether those changes satisfy business requirements or whether a backend operation succeeded. Treat every suggestion as a proposal: inspect it, keep or edit it deliberately, and run the test.

The current Cypress Studio guide describes an anonymous trial of up to six accepted recommendations before sign-in is requested. It also lists limits of 60 recommendations per hour for a free Cloud account, 300 per hour for a paid account or free trial, and 10 parallel recommendation requests shared across plans. The guide describes AI as included at no additional charge during beta and says limits and pricing may change. These operational figures and terms are volatile; check the current Studio guide before relying on them.

AI suggestions can be affected by animations and transitional UI, which may expose intermediate DOM changes, and large pages may exceed the AI context window. Studio AI does not crawl an application automatically. If a test is failing, recording and AI recommendations are disabled until the failure is addressed.

Limitations to account for

  • End-to-end tests only: Studio does not support component tests or Cucumber-style tests.
  • Single-origin recording: it cannot record interactions across multiple origins.
  • Unsupported page contexts: it does not support recording inside iframes or Shadow DOM.
  • AI is not a business-logic oracle: recommendations are based on visible DOM changes, not application code, backend rules, or product intent.
  • Failure blocks recording: resolve a failing test before expecting Studio recording or AI recommendations to work.

If your flow depends on a second origin, an iframe, or Shadow DOM, plan to author or adapt the relevant test code outside Studio’s recording workflow.

Cypress Studio and Cypress Cloud are different

Studio records interactions to help author a test. Cypress Cloud records test-run results, commonly from CI, and offers run history and analytics. Basic Studio recording and manual assertions work without Cloud; Studio AI recommendations require a Cloud account and linked project. Cypress’s CI overview describes Cloud in the context of test runs.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server, not a Cypress test recorder. If your task is to capture a page image or PDF rather than author an E2E test, one GET request can return a screenshot. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots; and 1,000 screenshots per month are free with no card, with paid plans starting at $5 for 3,000.
