Lost Pixel’s project repository says the product is being sunset, but the notice does not give a shutdown date, support deadline, or promise about retaining baselines. Before choosing a replacement, inventory what you capture and how your team reviews changes. Chromatic is a natural first candidate for Storybook-centered component testing; Applitools is worth evaluating if you need visual checks integrated with browser or mobile automation. ScreenshotNeo is another option to try first when your need is clean website screenshots—not a like-for-like visual regression system.

What Lost Pixel users need to establish first

The Lost Pixel project repository displays the statement, “We are sunsetting the product and building what’s next.” That is a project notice, not a published service-end date. It does not establish how long hosted service or support will continue, or whether existing baselines will remain accessible. Contact Lost Pixel to confirm those details before setting a migration deadline.

Lost Pixel’s documented capture workflows include Storybook, Ladle and Histoire stories, selected application pages, and custom screenshots generated with Cypress or Playwright. Its hosted platform also provides a review interface, approval and rejection, collaboration, and monorepo execution. A replacement that supports only one of these pieces may not preserve your existing workflow.

Make a migration inventory

  • Capture target: List whether each visual check targets a component story, an application page, or a screenshot taken during an end-to-end test.
  • Capture mechanism: Record whether the project uses Storybook, Ladle, Histoire, Cypress, Playwright, or a custom integration.
  • Review process: Note who reviews diffs, how approvals are recorded, and whether reviewers need to see changes in component or page context.
  • Baseline handling: Find out where baselines are stored, how branches and merges affect them, and how you can retrieve old baselines.
  • CI needs: Record your monorepo layout, required concurrency, acceptable runtime, and how CI reports failures.
  • Coverage: Identify the browsers, viewports, and application types you actually need. Confirm exact support with each candidate rather than assuming it from a broad “visual testing” label.

Which Lost Pixel alternative fits your workflow?

These tools do not all solve the same problem. The strongest candidate is the one that preserves your capture method, baseline management, review flow, and CI integration—not simply the one that advertises visual testing.

ScreenshotNeo Teams that need clean website screenshots through an API or an AI-agent workflow, rather than an established visual-regression review system. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF captures, and its stated differentiator is that it removes known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. ScreenshotNeo It is not established here as a replacement for Lost Pixel’s component baselines, visual diffs, or approval workflow. Verify that a screenshot API meets your regression-testing and review needs before migrating those checks.
Chromatic Teams whose main workflow is Storybook and UI component libraries. Chromatic describes itself as built for UI components and component libraries, emphasizes Storybook integration and component baselines across branches and merges, and describes reviewing components individually. These are Chromatic’s own product claims. Confirm your required capture targets, branch behavior, review flow, CI integration, plan limits, current pricing, and service terms directly with Chromatic.
Applitools Teams evaluating SDK-based visual checks across automation frameworks. Applitools’ web-testing overview lists integrations for Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, and Appium, and describes its Visual AI approach. These are vendor-described capabilities. Confirm support for your precise framework version, app type, review process, deployment needs, CI behavior, current pricing, and service terms.
Argos A candidate to add to a broader shortlist. A third-party migration guide published in September 2026 names Argos among possible Lost Pixel alternatives. The available information does not establish specific Argos features or fit. Check its current official documentation and test your workflow.
Percy A candidate to add to a broader shortlist. The September 2026 third-party migration guide names Percy as an option. Check current official documentation for your capture mechanism, integrations, review flow, pricing, and operational needs.
Happo A candidate to add to a broader shortlist. The September 2026 third-party migration guide names Happo as an option. Check current official documentation and prove the required workflow rather than inferring fit from the shortlist.
Meticulous A candidate to add to a broader shortlist. The September 2026 third-party migration guide names Meticulous as an option. Check current official documentation and prove the required workflow rather than inferring fit from the shortlist.

The shortlist beyond Chromatic and Applitools comes from a third-party migration guide; the details available here do not establish how those other candidates compare feature by feature. Treat all vendor descriptions as claims to validate, not independent test results. No normalized, current pricing comparison is established here, so compare plans using your own screenshot volume and required concurrency.

When ScreenshotNeo is—and is not—a fit

Try ScreenshotNeo first if the underlying need is to request clean screenshots of web pages, serve captures to an application, or let an AI agent capture a page. Its API accepts a URL in a GET request and can return a screenshot or PDF. It is not established as a one-for-one replacement for Lost Pixel’s hosted review UI, visual baselines, approvals, or component-story workflow. If those are central to your migration, evaluate a visual-testing product for that part of the job.

ScreenshotNeo says it accepts cookie/consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. It also reports page verdict and billing status in response headers: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. These properties may help when clean page captures are the goal, but do not by themselves provide visual regression review.

How to choose and migrate without losing the workflow

  1. Confirm Lost Pixel’s operational timeline. Ask about service end, support, baseline access, and export options. The sunset notice alone does not answer those questions.
  2. Choose candidates by capture mode. Put Chromatic near the top of a Storybook/component shortlist. Include Applitools if its listed automation integrations align with your stack. Add the other names from the migration guide only after checking their current official documentation.
  3. Recreate representative checks. Include a component story, an application page, and an end-to-end-generated screenshot if those are part of your current usage. Exercise the same branches, viewport sizes, and application states you rely on in production.
  4. Test the review lifecycle. Have the people who approve changes inspect diffs, accept a deliberate visual change, and verify how the tool handles branches, merges, and rejected changes.
  5. Measure operational fit. Compare CI runtime, setup and maintenance work, concurrency, baseline access, and the plan cost at your actual volume. Ask vendors directly about migration assistance and service terms.
  6. Run old and new checks in parallel where practical. Compare outcomes on representative changes before retiring existing checks. Keep a recoverable copy of baselines or other artifacts you are entitled to retain, and confirm export or retention limits with the provider.
  7. Switch in stages. Move one workflow at a time, document how to review failures, then remove the old integration only after the replacement’s results and approval process are understood.

Common migration mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming a sunset notice is a shutdown schedule: Get an explicit date and baseline-access answer from Lost Pixel.
  • Replacing only the capture step: A screenshot generator does not necessarily supply baselines, diffs, approvals, or team collaboration.
  • Choosing from a framework list alone: An integration name does not prove support for your framework version, CI environment, app type, or review workflow.
  • Comparing old price tables: Pricing and plan limits can change, and no current normalized comparison is established here. Request current terms and calculate using your own volume and concurrency.
  • Moving every check at once: A small parallel proof of concept exposes baseline and review differences before they affect the whole team.
