Playwright Test can catch unintended visual changes in CI with expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). The key to dependable results is not merely adding an assertion: generate and compare baselines in a controlled environment, review snapshot changes as code, and choose browser coverage deliberately.
How Playwright visual comparisons work
A screenshot assertion compares the current page image with a reference image. When the test runs for the first time, Playwright creates the reference; later runs compare new captures against it and fail when they differ beyond the configured comparison rules. The snapshots are PNG by default. You can select WebP by using a .webp filename. See the Playwright visual comparisons guide.

});Keep the generated snapshot directory in version control. A baseline is expected test data, not a disposable build output: reviewers need to see whether an image change is explained by the related application change.
Set up a reproducible CI workflow
Rendering can vary with host operating system and version, settings, hardware, power source, browser, and headless mode. Playwright recommends running tests in the same environment used to generate reference screenshots. A deterministic CI image is a practical way to keep that environment consistent; if you create baselines locally, use a matching environment rather than assuming a developer workstation will render identically.

- Choose the baseline environment. Decide which CI operating system and browser project will own the reference images. Keep baseline generation and CI comparison in that same environment.
- Install packages and browser dependencies. In CI, follow Playwright’s sequence: install the project packages, install the required browsers and system dependencies, then run tests. Use the current commands for your package manager and operating system from the Playwright CI guide.
- Start with one worker when repeatability is the priority. Playwright recommends setting workers to
1in CI for stability and reproducibility. Increase parallelism only when the CI environment has the resources and your team has confirmed it remains dependable. - Run the tests and retain useful failure output. Preserve test reports and actual/diff images through your CI system’s normal artifact workflow so a reviewer can inspect a failure before changing a baseline. Artifact retention is useful workflow practice, not a Playwright requirement.
- Review and commit intentional baseline changes. If an application change intentionally changes the appearance, update the snapshots with
npx playwright test --update-snapshotsin the baseline environment. Inspect the image diff and commit the new reference alongside the relevant code change.

Choose browser and platform coverage deliberately
Playwright supports Chromium, WebKit, and Firefox, as well as branded browsers and device emulation. Browser and platform differences can create different expected images, so a snapshot should be associated with the project and environment it represents—not treated as a universal image for every browser.

If your immediate goal is reliable regression detection, begin with the principal browser and CI environment your team supports. Add projects when the product has a defined cross-browser or device-coverage requirement. For every added project, create and review the corresponding baselines. This reduces unnecessary snapshot maintenance while still allowing coverage to grow with product needs.
Microsoft’s Playwright Workspaces visual comparison documentation also cautions that local and remote browser snapshots can differ and notes that the host OS is included in the expected screenshot path. That is another reason a local screenshot may not be an appropriate CI reference.

Control the screenshot state without hiding real regressions
Visual assertions support screenshot options, including a stylesheet path, and document how animations are handled. Use these controls to make the captured state reflect what you actually want to test: for example, apply a test stylesheet where that is part of the intended comparison, or manage animation behavior when motion creates incidental variation. The available options and exact behavior are documented in the PageAssertions API.
Dynamic content should be handled intentionally. Decide which state is meaningful, then stabilize or selectively mask incidental variation only when it does not obscure product behavior. Do not loosen thresholds or mask areas just to turn a red build green: first inspect the capture and diff, then decide whether the change is expected. Keep project-specific styling and masking decisions documented so future reviewers understand what the assertion does and does not cover.

Update snapshots as reviewed test data
When a visual difference is intentional, run npx playwright test --update-snapshots in the same environment used for the reference images. Review the resulting images and diffs, confirm the application change explains the difference, and commit the updated snapshots with the code. If the difference is unexpected, fix the application or test setup instead of accepting the new image as a baseline.
Snapshot updates can affect many files, especially when changing browser projects or rendering environments. Review the scope of the update before committing; a bulk refresh can encode environmental drift just as easily as a genuine UI change.

Why visual tests fail in CI
- The failure appears only in CI: compare the baseline and CI operating system, browser version, settings, headless mode, and other environment details. Generate and compare references in the same environment.
- A baseline created locally differs remotely: local and remote rendering may differ, including because of the host OS. Regenerate the reference in the intended CI environment and review the diff.
- Many snapshots change after a browser or platform change: expected images are environment- and project-dependent. Review affected projects and update their references deliberately rather than assuming one baseline works everywhere.
- Failures vary between runs: investigate dynamic page state and incidental animation, then use screenshot controls that preserve the meaningful visual behavior under test. One CI worker is Playwright’s recommended starting point for stability.
- The team cannot tell whether a change is intentional: retain the test report and image artifacts, and make snapshot changes part of the code review so the code and visual difference can be evaluated together.

Can I use WebP instead of PNG for Playwright snapshots?
Yes. PNG is the default, and using a filename with the .webp extension selects WebP.
