Don’t start by widening the diff threshold or masking the whole screenshot. First make the page render the same state on every run: stabilize data and resources, wait for the UI to be ready, and control incidental motion. Then narrowly mask or ignore only content that is genuinely irrelevant to the regression you want to catch.
Why visual regression tests change when your code has not
A flaky visual test produces different screenshots across repeated runs even though the application code is unchanged. The mismatch may come from the capture conditions rather than a real UI regression. Common causes include animations, late or unreliable resources, dynamic data, and layout behavior. Chromatic’s unstable-test guidance describes these sources and recommends stabilizing inputs and resources before suppressing differences.
Start by comparing repeated captures and classifying the changed pixels. Ask whether they show changing content, timing, motion, font or image rendering, or a layout shift. If much of the page moves, investigate the viewport, browser environment, and layout readiness first; masking individual elements will not fix a page-wide capture problem.
How to make screenshot tests deterministic
Use fixed data and predictable assets
Replace values that change on each run—such as live timestamps, random content, or changing API responses—with fixed fixtures or seeded data. Where external assets are unreliable, use local static images or placeholders if those still test the intended UI. Make fonts available consistently, for example by serving or preloading them reliably. These steps preserve meaningful visual coverage while removing avoidable input variation. Chromatic recommends stable data and resources for reducing unstable visual results.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Wait for the state you intend to capture
Capture after the specific UI condition under test is ready: for example, after a result list appears or a loading indicator disappears. Prefer a condition tied to the application state over an arbitrary sleep, which may be too short on a slow run and waste time on a fast one. The right condition depends on the app and test framework; there is no universal wait that makes every page ready.
Keep the capture environment consistent
Use a consistent viewport and browser setup for the comparison, and make sure the layout has settled before taking the screenshot. If the entire image shifts between runs, check those conditions before excluding a region. A mask can hide a symptom while leaving the underlying instability intact.
How to handle animations without hiding regressions
If the test is meant to compare the settled interface, disable incidental motion or wait until it completes before capture. Keep animation behavior visible in a separate test when that behavior itself is what you need to verify.

Animation handling varies by tool. Chromatic documents that it pauses video and animated GIFs at their first frame; its guidance for animations that cannot be disabled is to wait for completion or ignore the animated element. Do not assume another runner uses the same defaults.

Masking is appropriate when a small area is intentionally unpredictable and its content is outside the test’s purpose, such as a live timestamp or third-party media. First ask whether fixing the test data or resource is practical. If it is, that usually preserves more useful coverage than hiding the pixels.
Playwright: mask or filter a narrow region
Playwright’s screenshot comparison documentation describes masking and a stylePath option for applying temporary screenshot styling to filter volatile elements. Use the selector for the smallest region that contains the changing content, and keep the screenshot assertion focused on the stable parts of the page. See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation and the PageAssertions API for the current options and syntax.

A mask covers the element’s bounding box, not just the text or pixels that fluctuate. It can therefore conceal changes to that element’s size or position as well as its changing content. Avoid masking a region whose dimensions or placement are part of the regression contract.
Chromatic: mark an element to ignore
Chromatic supports ignoring an element by adding the .chromatic-ignore class or data-chromatic="ignore" attribute. Its documentation notes that the ignored area includes the element’s bounding box and position. Keep the ignored region narrow, and do not use it where layout changes need to remain visible. See Chromatic’s ignore-elements documentation.

How to tune tolerances and update a baseline safely
A tolerance can absorb small, known rendering noise, but an overly permissive threshold can hide a real visual change. Playwright documents pixel-difference settings such as maxDiffPixels and the --update-snapshots workflow in its visual comparisons documentation.
- Inspect the diff and determine whether the visible change is expected.
- If it is a real, intended UI change, review it and update the committed reference screenshots using the documented snapshot-update workflow.
- If it is unexplained or intermittent, fix the data, loading, motion, or environment issue instead of refreshing the baseline.
- Set a tolerance only for known, acceptable rendering variation, and keep it narrow enough to catch meaningful changes.
Updating a baseline is a review decision, not a way to make an unexplained failure disappear. Do not automatically refresh references after every failed run.

Troubleshooting recurring visual diffs
- The whole page shifts: Check viewport and browser consistency, font availability, late resources, and layout readiness before adding masks.
- A timestamp or live value changes: Prefer fixed test data if possible; otherwise mask only the smallest region that contains the value.
- A screenshot catches a loading state: Wait for a specific application condition that represents the state under test rather than relying on a generic delay.
- An animation appears at different frames: Disable or complete incidental motion, or use the tool’s documented animation behavior. Keep motion observable when it is the feature being tested.
- A mask makes layout regressions disappear: Reduce its scope or remove it. A bounding-box mask may hide position and size changes.
- A diff persists after a baseline update: Treat it as a new mismatch to diagnose; do not keep accepting references without establishing why the rendered output changed.

If you need screenshots outside a test runner, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request captures a URL as an image or PDF. For example, save a WebP screenshot with cURL (replace the URL as needed):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses report the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Should I mask a dynamic element or fix the test data?
Fix or seed the data when practical; masking is better reserved for genuinely unpredictable content that is irrelevant to the test.
When is it safe to update a visual snapshot?
After reviewing the diff and confirming that the change is intended. An unexplained or intermittent mismatch should be diagnosed before the reference image is replaced.
