1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFunctional testing checks whether a component or system does what its functional requirements say it should do. A useful test starts with a required behavior, supplies relevant inputs and system state, performs an action, and compares the actual result with a clear expected result.
The test might be run manually, at a lower level, or through a browser. Choose the method that best verifies the behavior in question; a framework cannot compensate for an unclear requirement or a weak expected result.
What functional testing checks
The ISTQB Glossary, Version 3, defines functional testing as testing performed to evaluate whether a component or system satisfies functional requirements. The definition concerns the purpose of the test, not a particular test level, tool, or execution method. ISTQB Glossary
For example, if a requirement says that a customer can reset a password using a valid reset link, a functional test could set up an eligible account, submit a valid link, and verify that the password changes as specified. The expected result should be concrete enough to distinguish success from failure.

A repeatable workflow for functional tests
- Start with a requirement or acceptance criterion. Identify the behavior that must work. Clarify ambiguous rules with the responsible product or business stakeholder before encoding them as expected results. ISTQB’s acceptance-testing material emphasizes collaborative acceptance criteria and test design. ISTQB acceptance-testing certification
- Select representative cases. Include ordinary valid behavior and meaningful alternatives or failure conditions implied by the requirement. Choose cases according to the behavior and risk; there is no universal test count or coverage percentage established by the cited guidance.
- Prepare controlled data and state. Decide what users, records, permissions, or preconditions the test needs. For browser tests, Selenium recommends keeping setup distinct; where suitable, create data through an API or lower-level mechanism so the browser test focuses on the user behavior being checked. Selenium test practices
- Perform a focused action. Make the test small enough to have a clear reason to exist. Selenium cautions that long end-to-end scripts can be slow and harder to diagnose when they fail. Selenium test practices
- Assert the expected outcome. State what should happen and check the relevant result, whether it is a displayed message, saved record, status change, or another observable outcome. Playwright’s examples pair an action such as following a link with an assertion that the expected heading is visible. Playwright documentation
- Record enough detail to reproduce failures. Note the requirement or case, setup and inputs, action, expected and actual results, and relevant execution context. This is a practical reporting approach, not a mandatory template prescribed by the cited sources.
How functional testing differs from related testing
Testing labels can describe different dimensions. A test may be functional by purpose and integration-level or end-to-end by scope; these labels are not necessarily competing categories.
| Term | What it focuses on |
|---|---|
| Functional testing | Whether required functions behave as specified. ISTQB Glossary |
| Acceptance testing | Whether a feature or system meets customer expectations and requirements. ISTQB’s material emphasizes collaboration, acceptance criteria, user acceptance testing (UAT), and business alignment. Selenium’s documentation describes acceptance testing as a subtype of functional testing; terminology and categorization can vary by organization. Selenium, Types of Testing ISTQB acceptance-testing certification |
| Integration testing | Whether components or modules work together as expected. Selenium uses placing an ecommerce order with payment as an example. Selenium, Types of Testing |
| System or end-to-end testing | An integrated product or business flow, often in a production-like environment. Selenium gives a login-to-order flow as an example. Selenium, Types of Testing |
| Regression testing | Rerunning selected tests after a change to check that existing behavior still works. Selenium, Types of Testing |
| Performance testing | Measures system qualities such as behavior under load. It is nonfunctional testing, even if the test exercises a functional operation. Selenium, Types of Testing |
Selenium’s documentation summarizes the distinction with the questions “Are we building the product right?” for functional testing and “Are we building the right product?” for acceptance testing. These are the Selenium Project’s explanatory wording, not universal definitions. Selenium, Types of Testing

Manual checks, lower-level automation, or browser automation?
Manual execution can suit exploratory work, nuanced judgment, or behavior that is changing rapidly. Automation is useful when a team needs to repeat the same check after changes. The cited sources do not establish a quantified return on automation, so the choice should be based on the test’s purpose, repeatability, and cost to maintain.
Before automating through a browser, ask whether browser interaction is necessary to establish the expected behavior. Selenium notes that end-user browser tests are comparatively expensive to run and require infrastructure; a lower-level test may be a better fit when it can verify the behavior. Browser tests are valuable when the user-facing path across frontend and backend components matters. A large browser and operating-system matrix can make cross-browser coverage complex. | Approach | Best fit | Trade-offs to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Manual check | Exploration, changing behavior, or cases requiring human judgment. | Repetition depends on people repeating the steps consistently. |
| Lower-level automated check | Component behavior or module interactions that can be verified without a browser. | May not demonstrate the complete user-visible journey. |
| Browser-based automated check | User-visible behavior that depends on interaction across application components. | Requires browser infrastructure and controlled state; oversized scripts can be slow and difficult to diagnose, and environment combinations add complexity. Selenium test practices |
There is no single correct mix for every application. Weigh the behavior under test, speed and diagnostic clarity, environment requirements, repeatability and state control, and whether a real user perspective is needed.
Example: a browser functional check with Playwright
This minimal Playwright Test example demonstrates an action followed by an observable assertion. Replace the example page, link name, and heading with values from the application under test; it does not imply that any particular application has been tested.

A screenshot can help inspect a visible result during a functional check or retain visual evidence of a failure. It is not a substitute for an assertion: an image alone does not establish that a required operation, saved value, or business rule worked. Use browser assertions or other checks for the outcome, and capture an image when visual context is useful.

For a screenshot of a page as supporting evidence, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers, made by Yorker Media. The request below returns a WebP screenshot for the target URL; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of these steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Learn about ScreenshotNeo.

Quick Recap
Common functional-testing problems and fixes
- The expected result is disputed. The requirement may be ambiguous or express an outcome that is not observable. Clarify the rule with the product or business stakeholder and rewrite it as a concrete result before automating.
- A browser test fails intermittently. Check whether the test shares mutable state or depends on data created by another test. Make setup explicit and isolate cases; Playwright documents isolated browser contexts, while Selenium advises against shared state. Playwright documentation Selenium test practices
- A failure is hard to diagnose. The test may combine too many behaviors. Break it into focused checks with a clear purpose and record setup, action, expected result, and actual result. Selenium test practices
- A browser test is slow or costly to maintain. Reassess whether browser interaction is needed to verify the behavior. Move setup to a lower-level mechanism where appropriate, and reserve browser coverage for behavior that requires the user-facing view. Selenium test practices
- A screenshot looks right but the test still misses a defect. Add an explicit assertion for the functional result; use the screenshot as supporting visual evidence rather than the sole pass condition.
