The right Applitools alternative depends on what you need to test and how you want to review changes. For Storybook-based component review, evaluate Chromatic; for code-first screenshot assertions in an existing Playwright suite, consider Playwright’s built-in snapshots; for CI screenshots reviewed in pull requests, consider Argos; and for a self-managed, open-source web workflow, consider BackstopJS. Percy is another hosted commercial option. These are workflow-based shortlists, not a tested ranking: the available product documentation does not establish a neutral head-to-head winner.

What to compare before choosing an Applitools alternative

Applitools positions Eyes as a visual-testing layer for existing test frameworks across websites, apps, and documents, and Ultrafast Grid as cross-browser and device testing infrastructure. Alternatives differ in what they capture, where screenshots are rendered, how reviewers approve changes, and who operates the system. Start with the dimensions below rather than comparing product names alone.

  • Stack fit: Check support for your existing test framework, language, component setup, and CI workflow. For example, Chromatic documents Storybook, Vitest, Playwright, and Cypress integrations; Argos documents several ways to supply screenshots.
  • Capture and rendering: Establish whether screenshots are created in your CI environment or rendered through a hosted service, and which browsers and viewport sizes matter to your team. Rendering can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, and other conditions.
  • Review workflow: Compare how the tool creates baselines, presents diffs, assigns review, gates pull requests, and records approvals.
  • Test scope: Decide whether you mainly need component states, whole pages, application journeys, or coverage beyond web pages. A component-focused workflow does not automatically cover end-to-end visual checks.
  • Operations and control: Weigh managed service convenience against hosting, data-location and policy needs, maintenance effort, and available support. “Open source” does not necessarily mean a vendor supports self-hosting.
  • Usage cost: Estimate screenshot or checkpoint volume, browser and viewport combinations, concurrent CI work, team size, retention, and support requirements. Verify current plan limits and contract terms with the vendor before comparing costs.

Applitools alternatives by workflow

Chromatic: Storybook-centered component testing

Chromatic describes a UI testing platform for scanning UI states across browsers, with visual tests, interaction tests, accessibility tests, reviewer discussions, and team sign-off. Its documented integrations include Storybook, Vitest, Playwright, and Cypress. That makes it a natural candidate for design systems and teams whose components and states are represented in Storybook. The key evaluation question is whether your stories actually represent the important product states you need to protect; component coverage alone may not cover full application journeys.

Playwright screenshot assertions: code-first checks for Playwright teams

Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() creates reference screenshots on the first run and compares later runs against them. This is a direct fit when Playwright is already part of your test suite and you are comfortable managing reference images alongside code. It is not, by itself, a hosted visual-review platform.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Baseline consistency matters: Playwright documentation advises running tests in the same environment used to generate reference screenshots. Differences in operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other conditions can affect rendered output. Keep baseline generation and comparison runs as consistent as practical, and review intentional UI changes before updating references.

Argos: CI screenshots and pull-request diff review

Argos documents a workflow in which tests capture screenshots in CI, CI uploads them, the service compares them with a baseline, reviewers inspect pull-request diffs, and approved changes update the baseline. It accepts screenshots from Playwright, Storybook, Cypress, Vitest, and other screenshot-producing pipelines. Its platform is MIT-licensed and open source, but Argos states that self-hosting is not officially supported or documented; treat the managed service as the supported route unless you have separately verified what operating the code yourself entails.

BackstopJS: self-managed web visual checks

BackstopJS is an open-source visual-regression workflow for web applications. Its project information describes headless Chrome rendering and optional interaction scripting through Playwright or Puppeteer. Consider it when your team wants to operate its own web checks and can take responsibility for the surrounding setup. The project description does not establish a managed approval workflow, enterprise support offering, or comparative accuracy against hosted platforms.

Percy: hosted commercial visual testing

BrowserStack describes Percy as an automation-integrated visual regression product using DOM snapshots, browser rendering, baselines, dashboards, and CI workflows. It is a candidate to evaluate if you want a commercial hosted workflow. Confirm the exact Percy product, included screenshot allowance, overage terms, annual billing, and contract scope directly with BrowserStack: plan details can change, and a vendor’s product guide is not an independent benchmark.

How to shortlist without mistaking feature fit for a winner

  1. Choose representative cases. Include a few high-value components or pages, important states such as empty and error views, and any critical user journey. The selection should reflect the coverage you need, not just the easiest screens to capture.
  2. Run the same cases through your finalists. Use your real framework and CI context where possible. Record how baselines are created, how a change is reviewed, and what must be maintained by your team.
  3. Check environment control. For screenshot assertions, keep browser and operating-system conditions stable between baseline and comparison runs. Identify whether hosted rendering or your own CI machines provide the browser and viewport coverage you require.
  4. Walk through a real change. Make an intentional UI change and follow it through diff inspection, reviewer approval, pull-request status, and baseline update. This exposes workflow friction that a feature checklist will miss.
  5. Estimate actual operating cost. Use expected screenshot/checkpoint volume and required parallelism, not a headline entry price. Validate current limits and terms with the vendor.

What the available price information can—and cannot—tell you

There is no independent, apples-to-apples cost comparison established for a particular team. Argos’s July 2026 comparison article, written by a vendor that sells one of the alternatives, reports an Argos Pro entry price of $100 per month including 35,000 screenshots, a Chromatic entry price of $179 per month, and an Applitools entry estimate of about $399 per month. These are vendor-reported comparison figures, not quotes for your usage or independently verified market prices; confirm current pricing and plan details with each provider.

BrowserStack publishes Percy-related plan and screenshot allowance information on its pricing page. Check the current product and allowance there alongside overage, billing, and contract details rather than inferring a comparable total from a plan name.

Where ScreenshotNeo fits—and where it does not

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a visual-regression review system like the tools above. It can be useful when the adjacent problem is obtaining a screenshot from a URL—for example, as part of a custom capture pipeline—but the facts available for ScreenshotNeo do not establish baseline management, visual diff review, or pull-request approvals. Keep that distinction clear when evaluating it alongside Applitools alternatives.

For one-call website capture, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of stripe.com:

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Playwright screenshot assertions replace Applitools Eyes?

They can cover code-first screenshot comparisons for a Playwright suite, but Playwright’s built-in assertion is not itself a hosted visual-review platform. Whether that is sufficient depends on your review, coverage, and operations needs.

Is Argos self-hosting officially supported?

Argos says self-hosting is not officially supported or documented. Its managed cloud is the documented supported route.
