You can run Cypress tests against WebKit by enabling Cypress’s experimental WebKit support, installing playwright-webkit, installing WebKit’s system dependencies on Linux when needed, and running Cypress with --browser webkit. This exercises Safari’s browser engine, not Apple Safari itself, and the integration has documented limitations.

What you need before running WebKit tests

  • An existing Cypress project and its Cypress configuration file.
  • playwright-webkit installed in the project so Cypress can use the WebKit browser package.
  • On Linux, WebKit’s system dependencies and Cypress’s separate Linux prerequisites.
  • WebKit installed in the same environment where the tests run, including CI.

Cypress describes this as experimental support for WebKit, Safari’s browser engine. It is not a run of Apple Safari, and experimental support should not be treated as a guarantee that every Safari behavior or Cypress feature is covered. The browser guide and known issues are documented at Cypress: Launching browsers in Cypress.

How to enable WebKit in Cypress

  1. Enable the experimental option

    In the Cypress configuration file your project uses, add experimentalWebKitSupport: true to the configuration object. The option defaults to false. Preserve your existing configuration rather than replacing it.

    const { defineConfig } = require('cypress')

    module.exports = defineConfig({
      experimentalWebKitSupport: true,
    })
  2. Install the WebKit package

    From the project root, install playwright-webkit as a development dependency:

    • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
    npm install playwright-webkit --save-dev

    Cypress’s WebKit experiment uses the Playwright WebKit browser package. Cypress itself should already be installed in the project.

  3. Install Linux dependencies if applicable

    On Linux, install WebKit’s system dependencies with Playwright’s installer:

    npx playwright install-deps webkit

    This does not replace Cypress’s own Linux system prerequisites. Follow the Cypress installation instructions for your Linux distribution and environment as well: Cypress installation guide.

  4. Run Cypress against WebKit

    Run the suite from the project root:

    npx cypress run --browser webkit

    For interactive testing, open Cypress and choose WebKit from the browser selector once Cypress detects the installation:

    Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
    npx cypress open

    Cypress also documents cypress run --browser webkit --record for recording to Cypress Cloud. Add --record only if your project is configured for that workflow.

Running WebKit tests in CI

The browser must be installed in the environment where Cypress runs. Configure CI to install the project dependencies, install WebKit, and install the required operating-system dependencies when the runner is Linux. Then invoke the same browser selection flag used locally.

npm install
npx playwright install webkit
npx playwright install-deps webkit
npx cypress run --browser webkit

The Playwright dependency command is relevant on Linux; follow your runner’s platform-specific Cypress installation requirements separately. The exact CI configuration varies by provider, but the essential requirement is that WebKit be available to Cypress in the test environment. Cypress’s cross-browser guide explains browser selection: Cross-browser testing.

What WebKit coverage does—and does not—tell you

WebKit is the browser engine associated with Safari, so Cypress’s experimental integration lets teams exercise WebKit behavior in environments such as Windows, Linux, and CI where automating Apple Safari is not available on every platform. It does not establish that a test ran in Apple Safari, nor does a passing run prove identical behavior across Safari versions or devices.

Before relying on WebKit results for a suite, check whether the tests depend on Cypress features the WebKit integration does not support or handles differently. Cypress documents these known limitations:

  • cy.origin() is not supported in WebKit.
  • Test Replay is not supported.
  • cy.intercept()’s forceNetworkError option is disabled.
  • Some cy.type() event properties and arrow-key behavior differ.
  • With experimentalSingleTabRunMode and video recording, only the first spec’s video is recorded.
  • Stack traces may omit function names or location information.

The Cypress configuration reference says injectDocumentDomain must be true when using experimental WebKit because cy.origin() is unavailable. This setting has compatibility caveats; if your tests cross subdomains, review the current Cypress configuration reference and verify your application’s behavior rather than assuming the setting is a transparent substitute.

Choosing WebKit alongside other Cypress browser targets

Choose the browser target based on the engine behavior you need to exercise, the browsers installed in your local or CI environment, and whether the suite relies on WebKit’s unsupported or differing features. Cypress supports selecting an installed browser through its CLI flag; WebKit is the relevant target when you want coverage against Safari’s engine, while other available targets exercise their respective browser engines. A WebKit run complements other browser tests; it should not be treated as a substitute for testing every browser and environment your application supports.

Troubleshooting Cypress WebKit runs

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Cypress does not offer or launch WebKit The experimental option is not enabled, or WebKit is not installed or detected. Confirm experimentalWebKitSupport: true is in the active configuration, install playwright-webkit from the project root, and ensure the browser is installed in the same environment running Cypress.
WebKit fails to start on Linux Required operating-system libraries may be missing. Run npx playwright install-deps webkit and satisfy Cypress’s separate Linux prerequisites for the distribution and runner.
A test fails at cy.origin() cy.origin() is not supported in experimental WebKit. Review whether the test can be structured without that command for this target. Do not assume injectDocumentDomain resolves all cross-subdomain cases; review its documented caveats.
Network error interception behaves differently cy.intercept() with forceNetworkError is disabled in WebKit. Do not use this behavior as a WebKit assertion unless Cypress changes the documented limitation.
Typing assertions or keyboard interactions differ Some cy.type() event properties and arrow-key behavior differ in WebKit. Check whether the assertion assumes another browser’s event behavior, and validate the expected application behavior in the target engine.
Recorded videos or stack traces lack expected detail WebKit has documented limitations for single-tab run-mode video and stack-trace information. For single-tab mode with video, only the first spec’s video is recorded; stack traces may omit names or locations.
