To debug a failed Cypress test in CI, record the run to Cypress Cloud, open the failing test, and inspect its Test Replay. Step through the command log and compare the DOM, network requests, console logs, and JavaScript errors around the failure. Test Replay requires an eligible recorded run, Cypress 13 or later, a supported Chromium-based test browser, replay enabled in project settings, and a successful artifact upload.
What Test Replay shows—and what it does not
Test Replay is a view into captured data from an eligible recorded test run; it is not a new reproduction performed on your local machine. Use it to move through the run and inspect what Cypress captured near the failing command. Cypress documents support for commands, DOM changes and element rendering, network requests, console logs, JavaScript errors, styles, SVG, iframes, shadow DOM, and canvas. Cypress Test Replay documentation
Some information is not captured. Documented exclusions include cookies, local and session storage, WebSockets, server-sent events, traffic from cy.request(), video and audio elements, and some shadow DOM cases. If an event falls into an unsupported category, its absence from the replay is not evidence that it did not happen.
Debug a failed CI test with Test Replay
1. Confirm the run was recorded
Test Replay requires a test run recorded and uploaded to Cypress Cloud. Connect the project to Cloud and make sure the CI workflow records runs using cypress run. The Test Replay workflow does not require changes to test code. Cypress guide to debugging failing tests

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Find the failure and review its history
Open the recorded run in Cypress Cloud and select the failing test. Review its error, retries, artifacts, and previous-run history. Determine whether the failure is new or has appeared before. For Branch Review comparisons, recorded runs must exist on both the branch being reviewed and its base branch.
3. Inspect the replay around the failed command
Open Test Replay from the run overview or test detail view. Step through the command log and line up the failed command with the captured DOM, network, console, and JavaScript error evidence. If the test has retries, compare a failing attempt with a passing attempt on the same code. That comparison can expose differences in timing or state that a single run cannot.

4. Test explanations against the evidence
- Element missing or late: Check the DOM and command order for a render delay, race, or assumption about when an element becomes available.
- State diverged after a request: Inspect the captured request, response, and console timeline. Remember that traffic from
cy.request()is not currently listed as supported replay data. - Failure passed on retry: Compare the attempts and history to investigate flakiness. A retry pass does not prove the original failure was harmless.
- Failure may be a regression: Compare the failing commit and branch history. Cypress positions Branch Review as a way to assess whether a change introduced a failure.

Use the Cypress Cloud CLI for terminal triage
The Cypress Cloud CLI can return replay metadata and a structured timeline of command, network, and log events. For example:

cy-cloud replay info --testId <testId>
cy-cloud replay timeline --testId <testId> --commands --aroundFailure 5 --network --logs
The timeline supports selecting attempts, command events, network types, logs, failed commands, and a window around the failure. Replace <testId> with the test’s ID. Replay data must have been captured and remain within its retention window; a replay may also be unavailable while processing. See the Cypress Cloud CLI reference for command options.
Requirements and limits to check
- Cypress version: The documented recording requirement is Cypress 13 or later. Cypress’s migration guide says Test Replay is enabled by default in v13. Cypress migration guide
- Test browser: Use a supported Chromium-based test browser, such as Chrome or Edge. The feature documentation does not support Firefox or WebKit test replays; troubleshooting also names deprecated Electron.
- Browser used to view Cloud: This is separate from the test browser. Cypress says Safari 16.4 and newer can render Test Replay; older versions may lack required web APIs.
- Project and upload: Replay must be enabled in project settings and artifacts must upload successfully. Network, firewall, proxy, and run-timeout issues can interfere with availability.
- Captured evidence: The documented capture includes DOM and rendering-related evidence but excludes several browser and network data categories. Interpret missing evidence in light of those limits.

Privacy and performance considerations
Cypress documents default redaction of sensitive values in captured network requests and responses before upload, and default masking of password and payment input values before artifact creation. Replays and test data are visible to users with access to the project, so review Cloud terms, security documentation, and project access settings against your team’s requirements.
Capture can consume additional resources. Cypress recommends disabling video recording when Test Replay is enabled. Capturing many or large canvas elements can affect performance; a canvas capture toggle is available in project settings. With Test Replay enabled, the Runner UI does not render during cypress run by default; Cypress documents --runner-ui to turn it on, with a possible runtime cost. Cypress does not provide a universal performance-overhead or upload-size benchmark.

Troubleshoot a disabled or missing replay
- Check the Cypress version. Confirm the test was recorded with Cypress 13 or later, and update Cypress before deeper investigation; Cypress recommends the latest version because replay bugs are fixed over time.
- Check the test browser. Confirm it was a supported Chromium-based browser.
- Check the project setting. Verify Test Replay is enabled in Cypress Cloud project settings.
- Check run output for upload errors. A recorded run is not enough if its replay artifacts failed to upload.
- Check network access. For network or HTTP failures, review connectivity, firewall and proxy rules, and access to Cypress endpoints.
- Investigate invalid or missing upload URL errors. If a spec exceeded the run timeout, Cypress suggests reducing spec runtime or increasing the configured timeout.
- Allow for processing and retention. A replay may still be processing, may never have been captured, or may have passed its retention window.
Or skip the browser setup
Test Replay is the right tool for inspecting a Cypress run. If your separate task is to capture a website screenshot without setting up a browser, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns a screenshot or PDF; its pre-capture steps can accept cookie banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server includes tools for AI agents to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
For a screenshot of a page such as the Cypress Cloud test view, using an authorized URL and credentials where needed:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
