Protractor reached end of life in August 2023, and its maintainers recommend that existing users migrate rather than adopt it for new projects. Angular CLI currently documents Cypress, Nightwatch, WebdriverIO, Playwright, and Puppeteer as E2E integration options. Cypress and Playwright also publish Protractor-specific migration guides, making them practical starting points for teams that want documented migration help.
Why Angular teams are moving on from Protractor
The Protractor project says it reached end of life in August 2023, discourages new adoption, and recommends that existing users migrate to another end-to-end testing solution. See the Protractor project website.
Angular’s maintainers explained that Protractor was built when WebDriver APIs were less mature and E2E setup was harder. By 2021, JavaScript’s async/await had made promise management easier, while Selenium WebDriver 4 had dropped Control Flow, making an upgrade disruptive. Protractor’s waitForAngular behavior—waiting for Angular application stability—was useful, but tied the runner to Angular. The maintainers favored framework-agnostic alternatives. That rationale does not mean Angular-aware waiting is never useful; it means teams should weigh it against portability and the maintenance burden of a framework-coupled test runner. How to choose a replacement
Start with migration support
If you want a guide written specifically for Protractor users, Cypress and Playwright are the clearest candidates in the cited documentation. Cypress’s guide includes a transition example and notes that Protractor is no longer included in new Angular projects starting with Angular 12. Treat it as a migration aid, not a promise that Cypress is a drop-in replacement: review the APIs and confirm that the new tests preserve the behavior your team needs.

Playwright’s guide also addresses Protractor migration directly. It presents Playwright Test’s auto-waiting as the closest conceptual counterpart to Protractor’s waitForAngular. The behaviors are not guaranteed to be identical in every application, so verify how asynchronous UI updates and retries behave in your own tests.
Decide how much Angular coupling you want
If your tests depend on Angular stability waiting, inspect how the candidate runner handles asynchronous rendering and what changes are needed to make assertions reliable. If you want one E2E layer that can cover non-Angular applications too, framework independence may matter more than preserving Protractor’s Angular-specific behavior. This trade-off reflects the Angular maintainers’ stated deprecation rationale; it is not a claim that one approach is always better.

Check integration and operational fit
Confirm each candidate’s current browser support, CI setup, debugging workflow, and fit with your application directly in that tool’s official documentation. The cited sources establish Angular CLI setup paths and selected migration guides; they do not establish a controlled performance comparison or a universal browser-coverage winner.
What ng e2e does—and does not do
ng e2e is not a built-in testing framework. Angular CLI uses it to run the project’s configured E2E target, which is supplied by the selected integration package. After adding a runner, inspect the project configuration and package documentation to see which target was created and how it invokes tests. This distinction matters during migration: changing the runner also means configuring the target that the CLI will execute.

A practical migration sequence
- Inventory the existing suite. Identify critical user journeys, Angular-specific waits, custom helpers, and tests whose assertions depend on timing. Preserve the behaviors that provide meaningful coverage before translating syntax.
- Select a candidate using the criteria above. If Protractor-specific migration documentation is important, begin with Cypress or Playwright and read its guide before converting tests.
- Add and configure the integration. Use the current Angular CLI setup command for the chosen package or follow that package’s manual instructions. Confirm the configured E2E target and its invocation in the project.
- Convert a representative flow first. Migrate a test that exercises navigation, asynchronous updates, and assertions. Pay special attention to waits that previously relied on
waitForAngular; verify the replacement’s actual behavior rather than mechanically translating every wait. - Run the converted test in the team’s target environments. Check that failures are actionable and that the test still verifies the intended user outcome. Expand migration in small batches so regressions can be traced to a change.
- Retire Protractor only after coverage is accounted for. Keep a record of tests intentionally removed or redesigned so the migration does not silently discard important scenarios.
