Automated visual UI testing checks whether a rendered screen has changed unexpectedly: a test drives your app to a chosen state, captures a screenshot, and compares it with an approved baseline. A difference is a signal to review, not proof of a defect. Keep the old baseline if the change is a bug; approve and save a new one only when the change is intentional.
What visual UI testing checks—and what it does not
Visual regression testing compares how an interface looks across runs. It can catch changes such as a shifted element or an unexpected rendering difference that a functional test may not detect. Applitools describes visual testing as regression testing that checks whether previously correct screens have changed unexpectedly (Applitools Documentation).
A screenshot diff does not explain why pixels changed or decide whether the change is acceptable. It could reflect a deliberate redesign, a genuine defect, or rendering variation. A person needs to review it in context.
Visual checks also are not accessibility tests. Automated accessibility scans target machine-detectable issues such as contrast problems, missing labels, or duplicate IDs. Playwright notes that some accessibility problems require manual testing and recommends combining automated checks with manual assessment and inclusive user testing (Playwright accessibility testing).

A beginner workflow for visual regression tests
- Choose a meaningful UI state. Pick a screen worth protecting, such as a page after navigation or a form showing validation feedback. Use a repeatable functional test flow to reach it.
- Capture a reference. With Playwright Test, add
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot()at the point where the UI is ready. On its first run, Playwright creates a reference screenshot; later runs compare against it (Playwright visual comparisons). - Keep the environment consistent. Use the same browser and rendering environment for the baseline and subsequent runs where possible. Playwright warns that OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendering. Teams testing different browser or platform combinations may need distinct reference snapshots.
- Inspect differences before acting. Determine whether a diff is an intended design change or a regression. If it is a bug, fix the app and retain the existing reference. If it is intentional, update the reference after review.
- Reduce avoidable instability. Wait until the desired UI state is ready, control dynamic content where feasible, and configure comparison thresholds deliberately. Do not hide or tolerate differences that could represent meaningful defects.
- Run checks in CI and review changes with the code change. Make the visual result part of the normal change-review process so someone can assess and approve intentional updates.
Compare screenshots locally with Playwright Test
If your project already uses Playwright Test and you are comfortable keeping snapshot files with the code, its built-in screenshot assertion is a direct way to start. The following test navigates to a page and asks Playwright to create or compare a page screenshot:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('homepage visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('https://example.com');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();
});
Replace the example URL with your app’s page and add the functional steps needed to reach the state you want to protect. Run the test once to create the reference, then run it again to compare. Review the generated diff when the assertion fails; do not update snapshots simply to silence a failure.

Set a pixel-difference tolerance carefully
Playwright supports maxDiffPixels for a pixel threshold. A tolerance can help manage small rendering variation, but a permissive threshold can also let real changes pass unnoticed. Choose it based on the UI and the variation you have observed, and review representative diffs rather than treating any threshold as a substitute for judgment.
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot({ maxDiffPixels: 100 });
Hide volatile regions only when appropriate
A custom screenshot stylesheet can hide content that changes unpredictably and is not relevant to the test. Playwright supports the stylePath option. Use filtering sparingly: hiding an element that matters to users can conceal a real regression.

await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot({ stylePath: './visual-test.css' });
For example, a stylesheet might hide a timestamp if the test is specifically about a stable page layout, not the timestamp itself. Keep that choice explicit and documented for reviewers.
Approve intentional updates as a reviewed change
Playwright provides --update-snapshots to update reference screenshots. Run it only after confirming that the observed difference is intentional, then inspect the changed image files as part of the code review. Updating references without review can convert an unnoticed bug into the new expected result.

Choose local snapshots or a hosted review workflow
The right workflow depends on how your team works, not on a universally established quality ranking. Playwright’s local comparison is a practical starting point when the project already uses Playwright and the team wants snapshot files managed with the code. Chromatic’s Playwright integration instead captures page archives during tests, uploads them to its cloud, and offers a separate review workflow; its documentation describes commit-linked storage, parallelized tests, and interactive debugging with archived DOM, styling, and assets (Chromatic for Playwright).
| Decision point | Local Playwright snapshots | Chromatic with Playwright |
|---|---|---|
| Where results live | Reference screenshots are managed with the project’s Playwright snapshot workflow. | Page archives and snapshots are uploaded to Chromatic’s cloud. |
| Review approach | Review diffs in the local test and repository workflow. | Use a separate hosted visual review workflow. |
| Useful fit | A team already using Playwright that wants direct screenshot assertions and source-controlled references. | A team wanting cloud-based review and the documented archived-page debugging workflow. |
| Questions to settle before adopting | How will snapshot files be reviewed, updated, and maintained across environments? | How will cloud review fit into commit review, CI, and the team’s existing process? |
For either option, decide which browser and platform combinations matter, how volatile content will be handled, who reviews diffs, and how approved changes are recorded. The cited documentation establishes workflow features, not independent comparative quality or value.

Or skip the browser setup: capture a page with ScreenshotNeo
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It can capture a URL as an image or PDF, but a standalone screenshot is not a replacement for a visual-regression test: you still need a repeatable test state, a baseline, a comparison step, and human review of meaningful differences.
For a quick capture, make one GET request. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month, with no card required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a visual test tell me whether a change is a bug?
No. A difference identifies a screen change to review; it does not determine whether that change was intentional.
Can screenshot comparison replace accessibility testing?
No. Visual comparisons check rendered appearance, while accessibility evaluation covers different issues and also requires human assessment.
