To retry only the unsuccessful work, open the failed run in GitHub Actions and choose Re-run jobs → Re-run failed jobs. You can do the same from GitHub CLI with gh run rerun RUN_ID --failed. A rerun uses the original run’s commit, ref and triggering actor’s privileges—not a newer commit or your own permissions.
Rerun failed jobs in GitHub’s web interface
- In the repository, select Actions.
- Choose the workflow, then open the failed run.
- Select Re-run jobs, then Re-run failed jobs.
- Optionally enable Enable debug logging if you need additional runner or step diagnostics.
- Select Re-run jobs to start the retry.
This option targets failed jobs rather than rerunning successful jobs. GitHub documents reruns of a workflow, all failed jobs, or specific jobs for up to 30 days after the initial run. GitHub’s rerun documentation explains the available scopes and limits.
Rerun failed jobs with GitHub CLI
For an installed and authenticated GitHub CLI, rerun failed jobs in a run by ID:
gh run rerun RUN_ID --failed
Replace RUN_ID with the numeric workflow run ID. To request debug logging, add --debug:

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
gh run rerun RUN_ID --failed --debug
If you omit the run ID, the CLI offers an interactive menu for a recent failed run. See the gh run rerun reference for CLI syntax.
Inspect the failure before retrying
A rerun is useful for transient failures, but it does not explain why a job failed. Open the run summary and failed-step logs first; GitHub’s interface lets you view and search logs. The CLI can show run information with:

gh run view RUN_ID
To display a job’s full log, use its job ID:
gh run view --job JOB_ID --log
Compare the failed step’s output with the workflow’s expected inputs and environment. If the underlying issue remains—such as an invalid configuration or unavailable dependency—rerunning may simply reproduce it. GitHub documents log access in its workflow history guide and run log guide.
Rerun one job or use the REST API
Use the web interface when you want to select a specific job interactively. For automation, GitHub’s REST API provides rerun endpoints for workflow run IDs, including an endpoint to rerun failed jobs. The failed-jobs endpoint reruns failed jobs and their dependent jobs; it does not mean rerunning only an isolated job while ignoring dependencies.

Fine-grained personal access tokens used with these endpoints need Actions repository write permission. Consult GitHub’s workflow runs REST API reference for the endpoint and request details before wiring it into automation.
Limits and context that carry over
- Time window: A workflow run or job can be rerun within 30 days of its initial execution.
- Rerun cap: A workflow run can be rerun at most 50 times total. The count includes both full reruns and reruns of subsets of jobs.
- Same commit and ref: The rerun uses the original
GITHUB_SHAandGITHUB_REF. If you need to test a newer commit, start a new workflow run for that commit instead. - Same triggering actor’s privileges: A rerun uses the privileges of the person who triggered the original run. Rerunning from your account does not replace those permissions with your own.

For website screenshots—not GitHub Actions job reruns—ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It is not a way to retry CI jobs, but can help if the failed workflow’s task is capturing a webpage. The API can return an image or PDF; its MCP server also lets AI agents use screenshot tools.
