Selenium’s Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) support lets automation code send browser-specific commands—and, through supported APIs, listen for browser events—that ordinary WebDriver commands do not expose. CDP is mainly relevant to Chrome and Chromium-based browsers, and it is version-sensitive: Selenium warns that it was not designed as a stable testing API. For standards-based, cross-browser bidirectional automation, Selenium points users toward WebDriver BiDi.
What is CDP in Selenium?
The Chrome DevTools Protocol is the protocol used by Chrome DevTools to communicate with a browser. Selenium exposes ways to send CDP commands through Chrome and Edge drivers, along with generated APIs for commonly used protocol domains. This gives automation code access to browser capabilities beyond the ordinary WebDriver command set.
CDP is not a browser-independent Selenium standard. Selenium cautions that it was not designed as a stable testing API, and that functionality depends heavily on the browser version. How Selenium uses CDP: commands, events, and sessions
Commands ask the browser to do something
A CDP command names a protocol operation and supplies its parameters. For example, Selenium’s documentation demonstrates sending Network.setCookie, then navigating and reading the cookie through WebDriver. In that pattern, CDP performs a browser-level operation and WebDriver continues the regular page interaction.

Some Selenium bindings provide a direct command method; the precise method name and available generated APIs depend on the binding and driver. Use the binding’s documentation for the command you need rather than assuming that every language exposes the same interface.
Events let automation respond to browser activity
Some workflows need more than a request followed by a response: they need to react when the browser emits an event. Selenium’s Python CDP API documents event listeners and wait-for-event helpers, as well as command execution. It also describes a root connection that can multiplex multiple CDP sessions. A basic command method is not the same as bidirectional support
Selenium’s CDP guide warns that basic executeCdpCommand-style access does not support features that require bidirectional communication. Some protocol work also requires knowing which domain to enable and the exact command and parameter names. If a task depends on ongoing browser events, choose an API documented for that interaction instead of assuming that sending a one-off command is sufficient.
How to choose between CDP and WebDriver BiDi
CDP can be a practical choice when a required Chrome or Chromium browser capability is exposed through CDP and your project can manage browser-version compatibility. WebDriver BiDi is Selenium’s standards-based direction for cross-browser bidirectional automation. Selenium describes BiDi as using a WebSocket connection for two-way communication and event streaming, while its browser implementations and feature coverage continue to evolve. Check the specific browser, Selenium binding, and feature before relying on availability.

Selenium states that CDP support is temporary pending WebDriver BiDi implementation. That does not mean every BiDi feature is already available everywhere; verify support for your actual use case in the WebDriver BiDi documentation.
Keep Selenium CDP support aligned with the browser
Selenium says CDP methods and implementations can change, recommends keeping Chrome and DevTools versions aligned, and documents support for the three most recent Chrome versions at any time. That support window moves as Chrome releases change, so use the applicable Selenium release information rather than treating a version list as permanent.

For a dated example, Selenium 4.40 was released on January 18, 2026, and listed Chrome DevTools support for versions 144, 143, and 142. This is a snapshot for that release, not a statement of the supported range in October 2026 or in another Selenium version. Consult the Selenium 4.40 release announcement and the documentation for the version you install.
- Identify the Selenium binding and version. CDP interfaces and generated domain APIs can vary by binding and release.
- Check the browser version against Selenium’s applicable CDP support. Do not assume that a method supported for an earlier Chrome release remains unchanged.
- Confirm the exact protocol domain, command, parameters, and any required setup. Consult Selenium’s guide and the API documentation for your binding.
- Use a documented event-capable API when the workflow must react to events. A one-off command interface may not provide bidirectional behavior.
- Recheck compatibility when updating Chrome, Edge, or Selenium. Treat CDP-related changes as part of the upgrade check.
CDP edge cases Selenium calls out
- Emulated geolocation: changing browser geolocation may not change a site’s location estimate if it infers location from the visitor’s IP address.
- Mobile emulation: Selenium says Chrome Options’ mobile emulation API is generally superior to overriding device metrics through CDP. Prefer the documented emulation API for that use case.
- Cross-browser requirements: CDP is not a portable way to automate the same behavior across browsers. Evaluate WebDriver BiDi when cross-browser bidirectional behavior is the goal, and confirm feature availability for the relevant browser and binding.

Common CDP problems and fixes
- A command or generated API is missing: confirm your Selenium binding and version, then check whether the relevant domain is available in that release. The generated interfaces are not identical across bindings.
- A command fails after a browser upgrade: compare the browser version with the CDP support for your Selenium release and consult that release’s documentation. CDP changes with browser versions.
- A command succeeds, but no event arrives: verify that the workflow uses an event-capable bidirectional API and that any required domain or listener setup is in place. A basic command method alone does not cover every bidirectional feature.
- Emulated location does not change a site’s result: the site may use IP-based location rather than the browser’s emulated coordinates.
- Mobile metrics do not produce the expected emulation: use Chrome Options’ mobile emulation API where appropriate instead of relying on CDP device-metric overrides.
