Chrome DevTools Recorder lets you record and replay a browser flow, then add a check that confirms the outcome you expect. A recording alone is a repeatable sequence of actions—not a complete test until you verify a meaningful result. This guide walks through creating, replaying, asserting, debugging, and exporting a first flow.
What Chrome DevTools Recorder does
Recorder is a panel in Chrome DevTools for recording, measuring, and editing user flows. You can replay a flow in the panel, refine its steps, and add a condition that checks whether the page reached an expected state. For a broader automated testing workflow, export the flow to JSON or a supported script or integration; recording clicks by itself does not create a comprehensive test suite.
Chrome’s overview describes the panel as a way to “record, measure, and edit user flows.” Chrome DevTools Recorder overview
Open Recorder and make a focused recording
- Open the page you want to test, then open Chrome DevTools. Use Command+Shift+P on macOS or Control+Shift+P on Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS to open the Command menu.
- Type Recorder panel and choose Show Recorder panel. Alternatively, open the DevTools More options menu, then choose More tools > Recorder. Menu wording can vary by Chrome version; the current overview documents these routes: Recorder panel overview.
- Start a new recording and name it for the result a user wants, such as “search returns a product” or “complete checkout.” A clear outcome makes the flow easier to recognize and maintain.
- Interact with the page as a user would: enter the search term, submit the form, or complete the relevant steps. Stop recording when the flow reaches the point you intend to verify.
Keep your first flow short and focused. That is practical advice for making failures easier to isolate, not a guarantee about how Recorder behaves on every page. Chrome’s tutorial demonstrates recording and replaying a user flow: Record, replay, and measure user flows.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Replay the flow and verify an outcome
Select the recording and run it from Recorder. Watch the page and the step progress so you can see where execution stops. Recorder waits for an element to become visible or clickable and may scroll it into view while running the corresponding step. That helps with ordinary interactions, but it does not prove the flow achieved its intended result.
Add a meaningful assertion
Choose an outcome that matters to the flow. For a product search, that might be a result card becoming visible; for checkout, it might be a confirmation message. In Recorder, add a waitForElement step and configure a selector and the condition to check. The feature reference describes conditions based on an HTML attribute, a JavaScript property, or visibility. An assertion failure is reported after a timeout.

- Identify the page element that represents success, such as the confirmation message or result container.
- Use its selector in the
waitForElementstep. Prefer a stable test attribute provided by the site when one is available; a selector strategy is not guaranteed to be robust on every site. - Set the condition that expresses success, such as the element being visible or having an expected attribute or property.
- Replay again and confirm that the check passes only when the expected state appears.
For the configuration choices and step behavior, consult Chrome’s Recorder features reference.
Edit fragile or incomplete steps
A recording is editable. Review the generated steps, remove accidental interactions, correct selectors, and add actions that were missed. Hover-dependent behavior is a notable case: the reference says hover events are not automatically recorded in all situations, so add a hover step manually if the flow depends on it.

When a flow breaks after a page change, inspect whether a selector still identifies the intended element and whether an explicit wait or assertion is needed. Avoid treating a successful replay on one page state as proof that the flow will remain reliable across all data or site changes.
Debug a failed replay
- Slow the replay: reduce playback speed so you can observe the page state and identify the step that stalls or targets the wrong element.
- Use a breakpoint: pause at a suspect step, inspect the page, then continue.
- Run step by step: execute one action at a time to distinguish a bad selector from a missing action or a page that has not reached the required state.
- Compare the step with generated code: use the code view to understand what the recorded action is attempting to do.
- Check the assertion separately: confirm that its selector points to the success element and that its configured condition matches the page’s actual state.
These debugging options and editable flow features are covered in the Recorder features reference.

Export when the flow needs to run beyond Recorder
Recorder can export JSON, @puppeteer/replay, Puppeteer, Puppeteer for Firefox, or Puppeteer with Lighthouse analysis; extensions can add formats. These are documented export paths, not guarantees that a script will run in a particular CI system or browser environment without additional setup.
| Choice | Useful when | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Replay in Recorder | You are building and debugging a flow in DevTools. | Execution remains within the Recorder workflow. |
| JSON export | You want an editable flow or to import it back into Recorder. | JSON can be edited and re-imported. |
@puppeteer/replay |
You want to use the exported flow with the Puppeteer Replay library. | The library and its execution setup are separate from the Recorder panel. |
| Puppeteer script exports | You want script-level customization. | Script exports cannot be imported back into Recorder. |
| Other documented integrations | Your environment already uses an integration such as Cypress Chrome Recorder, Nightwatch Chrome Recorder, CodeceptJS Chrome Recorder, TestCafe, or Sauce Labs. | These are documented possibilities, not endorsements or guarantees of present availability. |
For export formats and integration details, see the features reference. Extensions may add formats or replay options. The extension guide notes that some extensions work only on web pages, may require opening a new tab after installation, or can be blocked by administrator policy: Customize the Recorder with extensions.

If your goal is to capture a page screenshot rather than build a replayable test flow, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF with one GET request. It accepts cookie or consent banners and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
Example cURL request (replace the URL with the page you want to capture):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo includes 1,000 screenshots per month on its free plan with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card.
