QA engineers rarely need one tool that does everything. A useful testing stack assigns different tools to different jobs: checking components and APIs quickly, exercising critical browser workflows, measuring performance, finding accessibility issues, and coordinating results. Choose tools by the risks you need to test, your application and team, and the setup and maintenance your workflow can support.
Choose a tool by the question you need to answer
Start with the test target. A component test asks whether an isolated UI element behaves as expected; an API check asks whether a service returns the right response; an end-to-end (E2E) test checks whether a user can complete a workflow through the application. Performance and accessibility work ask different questions again, while test-management platforms coordinate cases and results rather than execute tests.
These layers complement one another. Cypress’s documentation describes how component, API, and E2E tests differ in scope: focused checks can give faster, more precise feedback, while E2E tests exercise the application as a whole and need more setup and maintenance, including CI infrastructure. Passing isolated tests does not prove that the complete application works together. Cypress: testing types
- Isolated behavior: component or unit-level checks.
- Service behavior: API requests and assertions.
- Complete user journeys: browser-based E2E or acceptance tests.
- Capacity and response: load or stress testing.
- Inclusive access: automated accessibility checks plus manual evaluation.
- Coordination: test management and reporting.
Browser and end-to-end automation
Browser automation checks behavior through a browser, making it useful for acceptance tests, functional workflows, and regression coverage. Selenium’s testing guide discusses functional, acceptance, integration, system, performance, and regression testing; it also frames functional verification with the question “Are we building the product right?” and acceptance testing with “Are we building the right product?” These are distinct goals, not competing definitions. Selenium
Selenium is a browser automation project that can simulate expected behavior in web applications. It is one option for browser-driven functional and acceptance tests. BDD tools such as Cucumber can map human-readable specifications to executable code and work alongside browser automation when a team wants that style of collaboration.
Cypress
Cypress supports E2E, component, API, and accessibility testing. Its E2E tests use user-like actions in a real browser to assess the application as a cohesive whole. That broader coverage comes with more setup and upkeep than a focused component or API check, so reserve E2E coverage for workflows where cross-layer behavior matters.
Playwright
Playwright’s official installation guide is the place to check its current setup and adoption instructions: Playwright installation. A feature-by-feature verdict comparing Playwright, Selenium, and Cypress is not established here; assess current browser and technology support in the official documentation, then try the framework against your application and team workflow.
Component and API testing
Component tests
A component test mounts an individual component instead of loading the entire application. Cypress describes component tests as specialized, fast, and reliable, but passing them alone does not establish that the surrounding application layers integrate correctly. Use them to pinpoint component behavior, then cover important cross-component paths at a broader level.

API checks and Postman collections
API tests send requests directly to HTTP endpoints and assert details such as status codes, response bodies, headers, and response time. Cypress notes that these checks can be faster and more precise than E2E tests for service-contract failures. They cannot tell you whether the interface renders correctly or whether its controls are usable.
Postman collections organize reusable requests. See Postman’s collections documentation for collection workflows. You can also use API testing features in a framework such as Cypress; select based on the team’s existing tools, coding approach, and reporting needs.
Performance and load testing
Performance testing evaluates behavior under a defined workload; load testing checks behavior at different defined loads, while stress testing examines behavior beyond the maximum supported load. Define the workload before comparing tools, and decide which measures matter. Selenium’s guide names throughput and latency as useful metrics and JMeter as a tool commonly used to retrieve performance metrics. TestRail also lists JMeter for load and performance testing. These sources support JMeter as an example, not a current head-to-head verdict against other tools. Selenium testing guidance · TestRail’s tool overview
Accessibility testing
Automated accessibility scans can flag known-rule issues such as contrast problems, missing labels, and images without alt text. Cypress describes accessibility checks as a layer that can be added to E2E, component, or other tests, with WCAG as a baseline. A scan cannot prove that a site is fully accessible: pair it with manual testing and explicit assertions for the expected interaction and accessible names. Cypress documents Cypress Accessibility as a paid Cypress Cloud solution. Cypress: accessibility testing

Test management and reporting
Test execution and test management are different jobs. A framework such as Selenium, Cypress, or an API tool runs checks; a management platform organizes test cases and results. TestRail describes itself as a test-management platform, not an automation execution tool. Teams can upload JUnit-style automated results through TRCLI to bring manual and automated outcomes into one place. A shared management layer can support coordination, traceability, and reporting across execution tools, but it does not replace those tools. Verify current integrations, service limits, licensing, and ownership requirements before choosing a platform. TestRail’s overview
How to choose tools for your team
- Name the risk and scope. Decide whether you need component behavior, an API contract, a browser journey, performance data, accessibility evaluation, or coordination across tests.
- Check application fit. Confirm current support for your frameworks, environments, browsers or devices, and required integrations in each product’s official documentation.
- Match skills and ownership. Identify who will write, maintain, and troubleshoot tests. A tool the team cannot reliably own can create more maintenance work than useful coverage.
- Test CI/CD fit. Check local and pipeline execution, result reporting, test data needs, and how the suite will behave in your deployment process.
- Estimate setup and upkeep. Account for infrastructure, test data, ongoing maintenance, and the added care required by broad browser tests.
- Compare scale and cost. Confirm needed browser or device coverage, concurrency, reporting, service limits, and current licensing costs directly with vendors; those details can change.
These selection factors align with TestRail’s guidance to evaluate supported technologies, CI/CD integrations, scalability, maintenance effort, licensing, usability, and ownership. TestRail’s QA automation tool overview
Example stacks for common QA needs
Small web product team
Choose one browser automation framework that fits the application and the team’s skills. Add focused component and API checks, and use E2E tests for critical user flows instead of repeating every assertion at the broadest, most maintenance-intensive layer.
API-heavy service
Organize reusable requests and assertions in an API tool such as Postman, or use API testing features in the chosen framework. Keep browser checks for behaviors that depend on the user interface.

Release coordination across multiple tools
Consider a test-management platform when teams need a shared view of cases and results. Confirm its integrations and plan limits; management centralizes reporting but does not run the automated checks.
Performance-sensitive service
Select a load-testing tool only after defining the workload and metrics you need, such as throughput and latency. JMeter is one documented example; the sources here do not establish a current comparative winner.
Accessibility-sensitive interface
Use automated rule checks to find known issues, then manually evaluate the relevant interactions and add explicit assertions where automated scans cannot establish the expected experience.

TestRail’s Fourth Edition Software Testing & Quality Report says 39% of respondents selected Selenium as an automation tool and 19% selected Playwright; it also reports that 56% of surveyed teams automated regression testing and gives a 62-out-of-100 average rating for QA-tool integration. These are figures from a vendor-published survey, not universal adoption rates or proof that a tool is right for a particular team. Capture rendered pages for visual QA
Screenshot capture can provide a visual artifact for reviewing a rendered page or documenting a state during QA. It is not a substitute for assertions that verify behavior, accessibility, or correctness. For an API option, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from a URL; it is an adjunct for capture, not a browser test framework.
Or skip the browser setup
Make one GET request with the URL and your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
