Use a unique, predictable ID when one is available. Otherwise, Selenium’s guidance favors a well-written CSS selector for ordinary element matching. Choose XPath when its ability to express a relationship or condition makes the locator clearer. Keep either locator readable and narrowly scoped; neither strategy is universally faster.
What Selenium recommends
Selenium’s locator guidance recommends a unique ID when available and says that, without one, “a well-written CSS selector is the preferred method of locating an element.” It also says XPath works but can be complicated and difficult to debug. Selenium’s locator guidance frames these points as practical recommendations, not a guarantee that CSS is always best for every page.
Both css selector and xpath are supported WebDriver locator strategies. Selenium’s locator reference illustrates CSS with #fname and XPath with //input[@value='f'].
When to choose CSS or XPath

Prefer meaningful, stable targets
Choose a locator based on maintained markup rather than whatever happens to match today. A unique ID is useful when it is predictable and belongs to the intended element. If the page has no suitable ID, start with a compact CSS selector. XPath is not a fallback to avoid; use it when it communicates the target’s relationship or condition more cleanly.

Keep the search narrow
Scope a lookup to the relevant parent or component when that makes the target more specific. Selenium cautions that broad DOM traversal can be expensive. Its finding-elements guide also explains that a nested lookup can often be expressed as one CSS or XPath locator instead of issuing separate browser commands. See Selenium’s finding-elements guide.

Choose singular or plural lookup deliberately
A singular find method returns the first matching element; plural find methods return a collection of matches. If the selector is expected to identify exactly one target, verify that assumption rather than silently accepting the first match. Use a plural lookup when multiple matches are expected.

Readability and debugging
Prefer the selector a teammate can understand and update when the interface changes. Selenium specifically cautions that XPath syntax can be difficult to debug. But a short, clear XPath can be preferable to a complicated CSS selector if it states the required relationship more directly.

Resilience to markup changes
Neither CSS nor XPath is inherently resilient. Stability depends on what the locator relies on: an intentional ID or attribute may outlast a selector tied to incidental nesting, regardless of strategy. The Selenium guidance supports keeping locators well-written and narrowly scoped; it does not establish a universal resilience ranking between CSS and XPath.
Speed
Selenium notes that XPath selectors are typically not performance-tested by browser vendors and may be slow. That is a qualitative caution, not a measured, current comparison across browsers. The sources cited here provide no controlled benchmark or speed ratio that establishes CSS as faster in every environment. If locator time materially affects your workload, measure the actual page, browser, and test flow.

Troubleshooting locator problems
The lookup returns no element
- Check that the page has loaded the target and that the selector matches its current markup.
- Confirm that the intended attribute value, class, or relationship is correct.
- For nested content, narrow the lookup to the correct context or revise the path without adding brittle incidental structure.
The lookup returns the wrong element
- Check whether the selector matches more than one element. A singular find returns the first match, not proof of uniqueness.
- Make the locator more specific with a stable ID, attribute, or appropriate context.
- Use a plural lookup to inspect the number of matches when multiple results are plausible.
The XPath is difficult to maintain
- Shorten it and remove dependence on unnecessary ancestors or DOM positions.
- Consider CSS if the target is an ordinary ID, attribute, class, or descendant match.
- Keep XPath when its relationship or condition makes the intended target clearer.
