Both need Bootstrap’s JavaScript plugin: dropdowns use data-bs-toggle="dropdown" with a .dropdown-menu; collapses use data-bs-toggle="collapse" and a selector pointing to an element with the .collapse class.
Choose the component that fits the interaction

These components are not interchangeable: a dropdown presents a menu, while a collapse reveals content in the page layout.
Load Bootstrap JavaScript
The HTML data attributes do not implement the interactions by themselves. Include Bootstrap’s JavaScript plugin. For dropdowns, Popper handles dynamic menu placement outside navbars; the Bootstrap bundle includes Popper. A dropdown in a navbar does not need Popper for positioning. Even if you initialize a dropdown with JavaScript, its trigger still needs data-bs-toggle="dropdown".
If a trigger appears but does nothing, first check that Bootstrap JavaScript is actually loaded and that the page is using Bootstrap 5.3 markup rather than Bootstrap 4 attributes.

Create a Bootstrap dropdown
Place the trigger and menu in a .dropdown wrapper, or another relatively positioned container. This example uses a semantic button and a list of links:

</div>How the dropdown behaves
Bootstrap dropdowns are toggled by clicking, not by hovering. Bootstrap also provides common keyboard behavior: users can move among .dropdown-item elements with the cursor keys and close the dropdown with Escape.

A dropdown is a general overlay, not automatically an application-menu widget. Choose ARIA roles and attributes for the actual content and interaction rather than adding menu roles by default. The button’s aria-expanded starts as false; Bootstrap updates it as the dropdown opens and closes.
Create a collapsible content region
Give the trigger a data-bs-target selector that matches the target element’s ID. The target needs the collapse class. For a trigger controlling one panel, use aria-controls to identify that panel:

</div>Set the initial state correctly
To start with the panel open, add show to the target and set the trigger’s aria-expanded to true. Bootstrap updates aria-expanded as the panel changes state. The prefers-reduced-motion setting is respected for the collapse animation.
Keep padding off the animated element
Do not put padding directly on the element carrying .collapse. Put it on an inner wrapper instead, as in the example. This avoids interfering with the component’s height animation.

Group collapsible panels like an accordion
For a group where opening one panel should close another, use data-bs-parent to associate a collapsible area with its parent selector. That gives you the collapse grouping behavior, but it does not supply every optional keyboard interaction in the ARIA Authoring Practices accordion pattern. If your interface needs that full interaction model, add and test the required keyboard behavior yourself rather than assuming data-bs-parent provides it.
Troubleshoot dropdown and collapse issues
- The trigger does nothing. Confirm Bootstrap JavaScript is loaded. For a dropdown positioned outside a navbar, also ensure Popper is available; using the Bootstrap bundle is one way to include it.
- The markup uses
data-toggle. That is Bootstrap 4-style syntax. In Bootstrap 5.3, usedata-bs-toggle. - A collapse trigger targets nothing. Check that
data-bs-targetcontains a valid selector, such as#details, and that the page has an element with the matchingid="details". - The panel starts open but accessibility state says closed. Add
showto the initially open target and set its trigger’saria-expandedtotrue. - The collapse animation behaves unexpectedly around spacing. Move padding from the animated
.collapseelement to a child wrapper. - A dropdown only opens on hover or is being treated as a complete ARIA menu. Bootstrap’s documented interaction is click-toggled, with common cursor-key and Escape behavior. Implement the interaction and semantics your specific content requires instead of relying on hover or assuming Bootstrap supplies every application-menu behavior.
