PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo accept an invalid or self-signed TLS certificate in Selenium, set the WebDriver session capability acceptInsecureCerts to true in the browser options before creating the driver. It applies for the whole session. Leave it false when the test needs to verify that the browser rejects an invalid certificate.
What acceptInsecureCerts does
“SSL certificate” remains common search wording, but current Selenium documentation describes the setting in terms of TLS certificates. With acceptInsecureCerts set to true, the browser trusts invalid certificates during navigation for that WebDriver session, including self-signed certificates. When it is false, navigation returns an insecure-certificate error if a domain has certificate problems. Selenium WebDriver options
This setting bypasses browser certificate validation; it does not repair an expired certificate, fix a hostname mismatch, or establish that a production site has valid TLS. Use it only when the test intentionally needs to proceed behind a known-invalid test certificate. MDN: acceptInsecureCerts
Set the capability before creating the driver
Configure the browser Options or capabilities object and pass it into the WebDriver constructor. Because the capability applies to the session, it is not a per-navigation switch: changing a setting after the driver has started does not configure that session.

Python with a remote WebDriver
This example follows Selenium’s documented Remote WebDriver pattern. Set grid_url to the URL of your Grid or hosted browser endpoint.
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.chrome.options import Options
options = Options()
options.set_capability("acceptInsecureCerts", True)
driver = webdriver.Remote(command_executor=grid_url, options=options)
try:
driver.get("https://your-test-host.example")
finally:
driver.quit()
The current Selenium Python documentation demonstrates using Options, set_capability, and passing the options to webdriver.Remote. Its displayed version is 4.50.0; check the documentation and installed binding if your project uses a different version. Selenium Remote WebDriver

Local Chrome
Use Chrome Options when creating the local driver; the standard capability is documented by ChromeDriver as well as Selenium.
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.chrome.options import Options
options = Options()
options.set_capability("acceptInsecureCerts", True)
driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
try:
driver.get("https://your-test-host.example")
finally:
driver.quit()

Choose between testing validation and bypassing it
| Test goal | Capability choice | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Verify normal certificate validation or test the browser’s certificate warning | false |
Keep validation enabled; correct the endpoint or trust setup if the test is supposed to reach a valid site. |
| Exercise application behavior behind a known-invalid test certificate | true |
Set the capability when creating the session, and scope the bypass to the test that requires it. |
A successful run with certificate checks suppressed says nothing about whether the endpoint’s certificate is valid. If certificate validation is what you are testing, do not enable the bypass.

Troubleshoot certificate errors
- Identify the browser’s actual certificate problem. Determine whether the certificate is expired, self-signed or issued by an untrusted authority, or has a hostname/domain problem. Avoid suppressing validation until the test’s purpose is clear. MDN: insecure certificate error
- If the test should validate certificates, keep the capability false. Fix the test endpoint, certificate chain, hostname, or trust configuration so the browser receives the certificate the test expects. The precise fix depends on the test environment.
- If the test should proceed despite a known-invalid certificate, set the capability before session creation. Confirm that your code passes the configured options object to the driver rather than constructing the session with different options.
- If a remote session still fails, check what reached the remote end. Inspect the negotiated session capabilities and browser, driver, and Grid/provider logs. Confirm that the remote endpoint accepts and applies the requested capability; behavior can depend on the specific environment.
- Keep the bypass limited to sessions that need it. Use a separate session configuration for tests that must exercise normal browser validation.
Local, Grid, and browser-version considerations
acceptInsecureCerts is the standard WebDriver capability documented in Selenium’s browser options and JavaScript API, and ChromeDriver documents it too. These references do not provide a complete compatibility matrix for every browser, driver, Selenium version, Grid, or hosted-browser provider. Verify the behavior with the precise versions and endpoint used by your project.
For remote sessions, configuring the client options is necessary but does not by itself establish that every provider will honor the capability. Check the session’s returned capabilities and the provider’s documentation or logs if the browser continues to show a certificate error.
