Install Pabot and run parallel tests

Install or upgrade the parallel runner:
pip install -U robotframework-pabot -
For parallel execution by suite, run Pabot against your test-data directory:
pabot tests -
To run separate test cases from one suite in parallel, enable test-level splitting and choose a worker count:
pabot --testlevelsplit --processes 2 tests
Replace tests with the path to your Robot Framework test data. The --processes value sets the maximum number of workers; set it according to available CPU, memory, and the demands of your tests. Two cases can run concurrently with two workers only if they are independently runnable and the environment has capacity.

Choose the right split level
Suite-level splitting
pabot tests distributes suites to separate processes. This is generally appropriate when your test data contains multiple independent suite files. Tests inside a suite remain sequential under this default.
Test-level splitting
Add --testlevelsplit when you need individual test cases within a suite to be distributed across processes. The trade-off is that suite setup and teardown run for each parallel instance of that suite. Test setup and teardown still run for each test case. Review suite initialization for repeated work, side effects, and assumptions that setup runs only once.
Set worker count without oversubscribing the machine
Use --processes N to set the worker count, for example --processes 4. The Pabot documentation gives a default of the maximum of two and the CPU count. That default is not a guarantee that the same concurrency is suitable for every test workload or constrained machine. Browser-based tests, memory-heavy suites, and tests sharing limited services may need fewer workers.

Start with a modest count, confirm that tests remain isolated, then adjust based on your environment and observed run behavior. More workers can add resource contention rather than reduce elapsed time; the documentation does not specify a universally optimal count.
Handle shared resources and multi-machine execution
Coordinate shared resources with PabotLib
If parallel tests need exclusive access to a shared resource, PabotLib provides locking and resource distribution. The official guide documents --pabotlib to start PabotLib and --resourcefile for resource distribution used with it. Consult the Pabot parallel execution guide for the exact syntax and setup before adding these options to a run.
Divide work across machines with sharding
Use --shard i/n when dividing execution across machines. Sharding distributes the work across separate runs; it is not a substitute for coordinating shared resources or selecting a split level on an individual machine. Follow the guide’s syntax for assigning each machine its shard.

Group work into chunks
--chunk groups tests into a number of Robot runs. It can help when you want suites to share setup and teardown rather than creating a separate execution instance for every split unit. Chunking addresses run grouping and setup/teardown behavior; it is distinct from locking resources or distributing work across machines.
Keep test selection and parallel execution distinct
Robot Framework’s normal command-line runner uses robot [options] data, with options such as --test, --suite, --include, and --exclude to select tests. Those options select what runs; Pabot is the parallel runner that distributes execution into multiple processes. Suite setup or teardown happens more than once: this is expected with test-level splitting, where those suite-level keywords run for each parallel instance. Make initialization safe to repeat, or consider whether suite-level splitting or chunking better fits the test organization.

Tests fail only when run concurrently: check whether they use the same files, accounts, ports, database records, or other mutable resources. Isolate the resources or use PabotLib locking/resource distribution where appropriate.

The machine slows down or runs out of capacity: reduce

You need to divide one test run among machines: use the documented
--shard i/napproach and assign shards across machines; do not confuse this with PabotLib coordination.
