Clearing only cached images and files in your browser is generally safe. It removes saved copies of page content, not your cookies or sign-in state—provided you leave the cookies and other site data option unchecked. The main drawback is that sites may load more slowly the next time as images and other content are downloaded again.
What clearing the cache does
A browser cache stores copies of items such as text and images from pages you have visited so they can open faster later. Clearing the cache deletes those saved copies; it does not, by itself, mean deleting cookies, browsing history, or other site data. The browser can fetch the content again when you revisit a page.
Google says clearing cache and cookies can resolve website loading or formatting issues. It may also help when you want the browser to fetch current site content or need to free local storage.
What happens to logins and preferences?
If you select only cached images and files, your cookies remain, so clearing cache alone is less likely to sign you out or remove site preferences. The important part is checking the categories selected before confirming.

Cookies and other site data are separate categories. Deleting them may sign you out of websites and remove saved preferences or other site data. If keeping logins matters, leave that category unchecked.
Clear cache in Chrome without deleting cookies
Chrome’s instructions describe selectable data categories. Menu labels and available options can vary by device and version, so follow the current instructions for your device.

- Open Chrome’s Delete browsing data controls.
- Choose the time range you want to clear.
- Select Cached images and files.
- Make sure Cookies and other site data is unchecked, along with any other category you do not want to remove.
- Confirm the deletion, then reload the affected page and give its images and other content time to download again.
If only one website is causing trouble, look for the browser’s site-specific data controls before deleting data for every site. Exact steps for that approach depend on the browser and device.
What other browsing-data options remove
Cache is only one of the categories a browser may offer. In Chrome, selecting additional categories has separate consequences:

- Browsing history: Removes visited addresses from Chrome’s History page. It can also remove New Tab shortcuts and address-bar predictions.
- Download history: Removes the list of downloaded items; it does not delete the downloaded files themselves.
- Autofill data: Can remove local entries such as addresses and cards. Google says removing local autofill entries does not delete items saved in your Google Account.
- Site settings: Can remove website permissions.
- Cookies and other site data: Can remove sign-in state, preferences, and other data stored by sites.
Google also notes that some data saved to a Google Account may be removed from other signed-in devices. Synced browsing history has its own behavior: when history sync is on, clearing history removes synced history from other devices. Do not assume that clearing only cache removes all browsing data across devices; the effect depends on the selected category and sync configuration.
Choose the scope that fits the problem

Common problems after clearing cache
A page is slower on its first reload
This is an expected trade-off: the browser has to download removed images and other content again. Reload the page and allow those assets to load.

You were signed out
Check whether Cookies and other site data was selected. Clearing that category can remove sign-in state; clearing cached files alone is a different action.
The site still looks wrong or old
Clearing cache is a troubleshooting option, not a guarantee that every display or content problem will be fixed. Confirm that you selected cached files, reload the page, and allow it to fetch assets again. For a problem confined to one site, consider site-specific data controls rather than clearing everything.
