CSS selectors are patterns that match elements in a web page. In a stylesheet, they determine which elements receive a rule; in JavaScript, the same selector syntax lets you retrieve matching elements with querySelector() or querySelectorAll(). Start with the element’s type, class, ID, or attributes, then add conditions or relationships when needed.
Choose a selector for what you need to match
A selector can identify an element by its name or attributes, describe its relationship to other elements, or test a state such as whether an input is focused. The examples below show common patterns.
| Need | Selector type | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Match an element type | Type selector | button |
| Match any element | Universal selector | * |
| Match a class | Class selector | .notice |
| Match an ID | ID selector | #main |
| Match an attribute or value | Attribute selector | input[type="email"] |
| Require several conditions on one element | Compound selector | button.primary[disabled] |
| Match a descendant | Descendant combinator | article p |
| Match a direct child | Child combinator | ul > li |
| Match the next sibling | Adjacent-sibling combinator | h2 + p |
| Match a later sibling | General-sibling combinator | h2 ~ p |
| Match a state or structural condition | Pseudo-class | input:focus, li:first-child |
| Describe a stylable part | Pseudo-element | p::first-line |
| Match either of several patterns | Selector list | h1, h2 |
Combine conditions and relationships
Conditions on the same element
Write simple selectors together, with no combinator between them, to require that one element meet every condition. For example, button.primary[disabled] matches a disabled button that has the primary class. An element with the class but without the disabled attribute does not match.
Relationships between elements
Use a combinator when the target’s position relative to another element matters. A space means “somewhere inside”: article p matches paragraphs nested anywhere within an article. The > combinator narrows that to direct children. The + combinator selects the immediately following sibling, while ~ selects later siblings that share the same parent.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Alternatives in a selector list
A comma separates alternatives: h1, h2 matches either heading type. This differs from a compound selector such as h1.title, which requires one element to match both conditions. Selector lists and these relationships are described in the W3C Selectors Level 4 specification.
Use pseudo-classes and pseudo-elements appropriately
A pseudo-class adds a condition about an element’s state or place in the document, such as :focus or :first-child. A pseudo-element describes a stylable part, such as the first line of a paragraph. Use the double-colon form, as in ::first-line; the W3C specification notes that a small set of legacy pseudo-elements also support historical single-colon syntax.
In stylesheets, specificity can affect which declaration wins when rules conflict. For example, :is() takes the specificity of its most specific argument, while :where() contributes zero specificity. If you are debugging a cascade conflict, consult MDN’s specificity reference.

Find matching elements in JavaScript
Use querySelector() when you need the first match, or querySelectorAll() when you need all matches. An element-scoped query searches that element’s descendants.
const firstButton = document.querySelector("button.primary");
const allButtons = document.querySelectorAll("button");
const nestedLink = panel.querySelector("a[href]");
document.querySelector("button.primary") returns the first matching element or null if none matches. document.querySelectorAll("button") returns all matching elements. Use the latter when your code must process every match rather than just the first. The browser’s querySelector() and querySelectorAll() references document these methods.
Calling panel.querySelector("a[href]") searches inside panel, not across the whole document. The selector string must be valid CSS: an invalid selector causes a SyntaxError. A query cannot return a pseudo-element as an Element; pseudo-elements are styling constructs rather than ordinary DOM elements.

Handle dynamic IDs and class names safely
HTML IDs and class values do not have to be valid CSS identifiers. If a value comes from data and may contain punctuation or other characters that need escaping, escape it before placing it in a selector. CSS.escape() is one option:
const idFromData = "item:42";
const element = document.querySelector(`#${CSS.escape(idFromData)}`);
Keep the selector structure fixed and escape the dynamic identifier; do not treat untrusted input as arbitrary selector syntax. See MDN’s CSS.escape() reference and its guidance for escaping values used with querySelector().

- Using a space when you mean a direct child:
ul lican match nested descendants. Useul > liwhen only direct children should match. - Confusing a comma with a compound selector:
.notice, .warningmatches either class;.notice.warningrequires both classes on the same element. - Expecting one query to return every match:
querySelector()returns only the first match. UsequerySelectorAll()for all matches. - Querying a pseudo-element: a selector such as
p::first-linecan be used for styling, but it does not return a DOM element throughquerySelector(). - Assuming an ID is unique in malformed markup: IDs should be unique, but if duplicates exist,
querySelector()returns the first match in document order. - Building a selector from an unescaped value: punctuation in a dynamic ID or class can make the selector invalid or change what it means. Escape the identifier with
CSS.escape().
Account for browser and tool support
The W3C identifies Selectors Level 4 as a Working Draft dated 22 January 2026, not as a guarantee that every feature described is implemented in every browser or automation environment. MDN describes querySelector() as broadly available across browsers since July 2015, but that does not establish support for every newer selector feature. Check compatibility for the specific selector and the browsers, automation tools, or embedded environments your project targets. See the W3C specification and the MDN API reference.

Can I use a CSS pseudo-element such as ::before with querySelector()?
No. Pseudo-elements describe stylable parts and are not returned as DOM Element objects.
What happens if a selector string is invalid?
The query throws a SyntaxError. Check the CSS syntax and escape dynamic identifiers before inserting them into the selector.
