Use WebDriverWait with a condition that describes what your test needs next. Selenium polls that condition until it succeeds or the timeout expires, so you can avoid guessing how long a fixed sleep should be.

Create a wait and define the condition

WebDriverWait is in OpenQA.Selenium.Support.UI and derives from DefaultWait<IWebDriver>. Its standard constructor takes the current IWebDriver and a TimeSpan timeout. Call Until with a function that receives the driver and returns the result you need.

using System;
using OpenQA.Selenium;
using OpenQA.Selenium.Support.UI;

// Assumes driver is an already-created and configured IWebDriver.
var wait = new WebDriverWait(driver, TimeSpan.FromSeconds(10));

IWebElement result = wait.Until(d =>
{
    var element = d.FindElement(By.Id("results"));
    return element.Displayed ? element : null;
});

// The wait has completed; use result in the next test action.

This object-returning condition completes when it returns a non-null value. A boolean condition completes when it returns true. In either case, Until returns the successful result. With nullable reference types enabled, adapt the element-returning lambda’s annotations to your project’s compiler settings.

Choose the state your next action actually needs

An element existing in the DOM does not necessarily mean it is visible, interactable, or ready for an application-specific action. Put the required state in the predicate rather than waiting for a weaker condition and assuming the rest.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Wait for visibility

IWebElement result = wait.Until(d =>
{
    var element = d.FindElement(By.Id("results"));
    return element.Displayed ? element : null;
});

Wait for a boolean condition

This form returns true once the element is displayed:

wait.Until(d => d.FindElement(By.Id("revealed")).Displayed);

Wait for application-specific readiness

Use a predicate that captures the signal your page exposes. For example, if the title indicates that navigation has finished, check that title rather than merely checking that a shared page element exists:

wait.Until(d => d.Title.Contains("Dashboard"));

Choose a signal that is specific enough for the action that follows. If your test needs a particular result row, wait for that row; if it needs a control to become visible, wait for its visibility. A successful wait only establishes what its predicate checks.

Set the timeout and polling behavior

Pass an explicit timeout to the constructor, such as TimeSpan.FromSeconds(10) in the examples. The timeout should reflect the expected behavior of your application and test environment; Selenium’s two-second example is an illustration, not a general recommendation.

DefaultWait<T> documents defaults of 500 milliseconds for both timeout and polling interval. Because WebDriverWait derives from it, those defaults are inherited; specifying the timeout in the constructor makes the intended limit clear. The API also documents a constructor overload that accepts a clock and sleep interval.

Change the polling interval only when there is a concrete reason. For instance, Selenium demonstrates a 300-millisecond interval, but that example is not a universal performance setting:

var wait = new WebDriverWait(driver, TimeSpan.FromSeconds(10))
{
    PollingInterval = TimeSpan.FromMilliseconds(300)
};

Polling and the time each predicate evaluation takes affect wall-clock duration. Do not treat the timeout as a promise that the whole operation will end at an exact instant.

Handle transient exceptions narrowly

A condition may encounter a transient exception while the page changes. Configure only the exception types that are expected for that particular condition. Selenium’s API provides IgnoreExceptionTypes; exceptions outside the configured list propagate rather than being silently retried.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
var wait = new WebDriverWait(driver, TimeSpan.FromSeconds(10))
{
    PollingInterval = TimeSpan.FromMilliseconds(300)
};

wait.IgnoreExceptionTypes(typeof(ElementNotInteractableException));

This illustrates the API and a Selenium example; it is not a recommendation to ignore that exception for every wait. Ignoring broad exception families can mask a real locator or test error. Prefer a predicate whose result represents readiness, and add an ignored exception only when it is a known, temporary part of that specific condition.

Use lambdas instead of Expected Conditions in Selenium 4 for .NET

Selenium’s documentation says .NET stopped supporting Expected Conditions in Selenium 4. Express the condition directly as a C# lambda passed to Until, as in the visibility, title, and boolean examples above. Do not copy Expected Conditions examples written for another Selenium language and assume they are supported in .NET.

Avoid fixed sleeps and mixed-wait surprises

A fixed Thread.Sleep waits for the full chosen duration whether the page becomes ready immediately or remains unready afterward. An explicit wait instead checks a condition repeatedly and stops when it succeeds or times out.

Keep implicit waits modest or disabled when relying on explicit waits. Selenium’s .NET timeout documentation warns that increasing the implicit-wait timeout can adversely affect runtime, particularly with slower element-location strategies. Avoid assuming a universal formula for the combined duration of implicit and explicit waits.

Troubleshoot common wait failures

  • The wait times out although the element exists: The predicate may be checking the wrong state, or the locator may target a different element than the one needed. Check the locator and encode visibility or the relevant application state explicitly.
  • The wait succeeds but the next action still fails: The predicate may establish only presence or visibility, not the condition required by that action. Define the wait around the actual next-step requirement.
  • An exception appears immediately: It may not be in the configured ignore list, or it may indicate a genuine problem such as an invalid locator. Unlisted exceptions propagate; investigate them instead of broadly suppressing them.
  • The test remains slow despite a successful condition: Check whether an unnecessarily long fixed sleep remains in the test, whether the predicate performs slow work on every poll, or whether an implicit wait is also configured.
  • The condition never becomes true: Confirm the page can reach that state, that the selector or signal is correct, and that the timeout suits the test environment. Increasing the timeout does not fix a condition that is impossible or incorrectly specified.

ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for Selenium’s condition waits. If your task is to capture a page image or PDF rather than interact with it in a browser test, a single GET request can return the capture:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before a capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides screenshot and PDF tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
