Cypress runs tests in a browser. It can test a React web app, mobile websites, and apps rendered in a browser, but shrinking the browser viewport does not test native app behavior. For installed React Native apps, use a native end-to-end (E2E) testing option such as Detox, Appium, or Maestro instead.
What Cypress can—and cannot—test
Cypress’s FAQ draws the key boundary: Cypress cannot run on a native mobile app, though it can test mobile browser behavior and mobile applications developed in a browser, such as Ionic. That distinction is about where the application runs, not whether its interface looks like a phone screen.
- Native React Native app: Cypress does not automate the installed iOS or Android app or its native UI.
- Mobile website: Cypress can test the site in a browser. Its viewport controls can set a narrow screen size, but this remains a browser test.
- Browser-based app: Cypress can test an app that runs in a browser, including a web counterpart or a browser-rendered mobile app.
Cypress is not generally incompatible with React. Its browser-based React support includes end-to-end testing and component testing; the component-testing documentation covers React 18 and 19 with Vite, Webpack, and Next.js. See the Cypress React component testing overview for the documented scope.
Why a mobile viewport is not a native app test
Changing a browser viewport can help check responsive layout and browser behavior at smaller dimensions. It does not install or launch a React Native binary, exercise native controls, or establish how an app behaves on an iOS or Android device. A passing Cypress test at a phone-sized viewport therefore provides evidence about the web surface tested—not the native app.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If your product has both a website and a React Native app, keep Cypress for the browser journeys it can cover and use a native E2E runner for important installed-app flows. Avoid treating the two suites as interchangeable.
Native E2E options for React Native
React Native’s testing overview names Detox, Appium, and Maestro among the E2E options. E2E tests exercise the running app and are useful for checking complete user journeys, but React Native notes that they are slower and more prone to flakiness than lower-level tests, and take effort to run and maintain. Focus them on vital flows such as authentication, core functionality, and payments rather than trying to duplicate every test at the UI level.

| Option | What the cited documentation establishes | Points to verify for your project |
|---|---|---|
| Detox | Detox is built for React Native and exercises the running app on a device or simulator. Its v20.x documentation reports full New Architecture compatibility for React Native 0.77.x–0.84.x. | Check the current Detox compatibility information against your exact React Native version and architecture. Detox describes Expo support as community-driven and directs Expo users to Expo setup guidance. See Detox Getting Started. |
| Appium | React Native’s testing overview lists Appium as a native E2E option. | Confirm the setup, platform coverage, and runner integration that fit your app and CI environment in the current Appium documentation; the cited React Native overview does not establish a universal best choice. |
| Maestro | React Native’s testing overview lists Maestro as an E2E option. Expo documents workflows that run Maestro flows against Android and iOS development builds. | For Expo’s documented EAS Workflows route, note that the Maestro job type is marked alpha. Confirm its current status and suitability before making it a dependency. |
Choosing a test approach
- Identify the target. Use Cypress when the target is a browser-rendered web surface. Use a native E2E option when the flow must run in the installed React Native app.
- Check your project setup. Account for whether you use standard React Native or Expo, your React Native version and architecture, and how your app is built for tests.
- Check the runner and CI path. Confirm that the tool fits the build environment, device or simulator availability, and test runner integration your team uses.
- Choose a small set of high-value journeys. Cover critical flows such as sign-in, core tasks, or payment in E2E tests; use faster, lower-level tests for broader logic and component coverage.
There is no evidence here that one native option is best for every team. Compatibility, build workflow, and the environments you need to cover should drive the decision.
Testing an Expo app with Maestro in EAS Workflows
Expo documents a path using EAS Workflows to build development apps and run Maestro flows against Android and iOS builds. The EAS Workflows introduction describes the hosted workflow service, while Expo’s Maestro E2E workflow guide describes the development-build flow. The Maestro job type is currently marked alpha in that documentation, so treat the integration as subject to change and verify its status when adopting it.

Where ScreenshotNeo fits
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers, not a replacement for Cypress web tests or native React Native E2E automation. It is the alternative to try first when the job is capturing web pages: it accepts a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its clean-shot flow can accept cookie or consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server provides screenshot and page-information tools for AI agents.
For screenshots of a browser surface, a single request can look like this:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details. Learn more at ScreenshotNeo. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free and get 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling a narrow Cypress viewport a device test: it checks a browser at the selected dimensions, not native app behavior.
- Discarding Cypress because the product uses React Native: keep it if you also have a React web app or other browser-based surface.
- Assuming a tool is compatible based on its name alone: verify the current React Native version, architecture, Expo setup, and build integration against that tool’s documentation.
- Putting every test in E2E: reserve slower, higher-maintenance UI journeys for essential user flows and test broader behavior at more suitable levels.
