Selenium 4 uses the W3C WebDriver protocol exclusively; Selenium 3 supported both W3C WebDriver and the older JSON Wire Protocol. That protocol change is the central difference, but the practical upgrade work is usually about capability names and structure, Actions usage, and checking driver and runtime compatibility. Code already compliant with W3C WebDriver is expected to carry forward, though a project’s actual tests and infrastructure still need verification.

How Selenium 3 and Selenium 4 differ

Area Selenium 3 Selenium 4
WebDriver protocol Supported the legacy JSON Wire Protocol as well as W3C WebDriver. Later Selenium 3 code became W3C-compliant around version 3.11. Uses W3C WebDriver and removes support for the legacy protocol.
Capabilities Older code commonly used Desired Capabilities classes and names such as version and platform. Uses browser-specific options classes. Standard capability names include browserVersion and platformName; custom capabilities need a vendor prefix.
Locators Traditional locator strategies. Adds Relative Locators, which locate elements by their spatial relationship to another element.
Driver management Browser drivers were commonly managed manually. Selenium Manager was included starting with Selenium 4.6 for driver management. Automated browser management is documented from 4.11.
Upgrade considerations Tests may rely on legacy protocol behavior or older APIs and configuration. W3C-compliant code is expected to continue working; check capabilities, Actions, deprecated or internal APIs, and runtime compatibility.

For the official migration notes, see the Selenium Project’s Selenium 4 upgrade guide, browser options documentation, and locator strategies documentation.

What the W3C protocol change means

Selenium 3’s history spans two protocol approaches: the legacy JSON Wire Protocol and W3C WebDriver. The Selenium Project says code in the latest Selenium 3 became compliant with the W3C level 1 specification around version 3.11. Selenium 4 completes the transition by removing legacy protocol support.

For a test suite, this means configuration or remote-session setup that depends on the old protocol may fail after an upgrade. It does not mean every Selenium 3 test must be rewritten: W3C-compliant code is expected to work, but compliance alone cannot guarantee that a particular application, browser, Grid, or cloud configuration will pass unchanged.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What to update in your code

Use current capability names and browser options

Prefer the browser’s options class when configuring a session, especially for remote sessions. Use W3C-standard capability names such as browserVersion and platformName instead of older names such as version and platform. Give nonstandard capabilities a vendor prefix, as required by the W3C capability model. The Selenium Project’s Browser Options documentation describes the options classes and browser-specific configuration.

Review Actions and older API usage

The Selenium upgrade guide specifically flags Capabilities and Actions as areas to examine. Review action sequences and remove dependencies on deprecated or internal Selenium APIs. The precise code change depends on the language binding and the way the test uses those APIs; consult the upgrade notes for that binding rather than applying a blanket rewrite.

Consider Relative Locators where useful

Relative Locators are an additional locator option in Selenium 4, not a requirement to replace existing locators. They can help when a target is easier to identify by its position relative to another element. Traditional locator strategies remain available. See the project’s locator documentation for supported approaches.

Driver setup: Selenium Manager arrived after Selenium 4.0

Selenium Manager should not be described as a feature of the initial Selenium 4.0 release. It was shipped with Selenium releases starting at 4.6 for driver management; automated browser management is documented from 4.11. It runs as a fallback when the language binding does not find a supplied driver, so teams can continue to manage drivers manually if that suits their environment.

Check the current Selenium Manager documentation for its behavior and requirements. Selenium Manager can reduce routine driver setup, but it does not remove the need to confirm that the browser, driver, Selenium binding, and test infrastructure are compatible.

How to upgrade safely

  1. Check current release and binding requirements. Upgrade the Selenium dependency with your language’s package manager or build tool. Before choosing a version, check the official upgrade guide and current project release information rather than copying a version from an older tutorial.
  2. Modernize session configuration. Replace obsolete capability names with W3C-standard names, use the relevant browser options class, and prefix custom capabilities as required.
  3. Audit Actions and API calls. Search for deprecated or internal Selenium methods and review any complex Actions sequences against the binding’s migration guidance.
  4. Verify your environment. Confirm the language binding’s current runtime minimum and compatibility with your browsers, Grid, and cloud provider. These requirements vary by binding and can change; consult the current documentation for each component.
  5. Run the project’s tests on its real setup. Test against the browsers and infrastructure you use in development or CI. Documentation cannot establish whether a specific application’s tests will pass.

Common upgrade problems and how to investigate them

  • Session creation fails with a capability error: Check for older names such as version or platform, malformed capability structure, and custom capabilities without a vendor prefix. Use the browser options class and consult the options documentation.
  • A remote session rejects configuration that worked before: Confirm the remote endpoint and its Selenium/Grid or cloud-provider version support the W3C capability structure you are sending. The Selenium 4 client no longer uses the legacy protocol.
  • Driver startup fails: Determine whether your setup supplies a driver or expects Selenium Manager to find one. Review the Manager documentation and check browser availability, environment configuration, and network or execution restrictions that could prevent setup.
  • An interaction fails after the dependency upgrade: Inspect the Actions sequence and any deprecated or internal API calls. Reproduce the failure with the project’s actual browser and binding, then compare the relevant code with the upgrade guide.
  • The project does not build or run on its existing runtime: Check the current minimum runtime for the specific Selenium language binding and the compatibility of the project’s other dependencies. There is no single runtime requirement that applies across all bindings.

Release timing and version checks

Selenium 4.0.0 was announced on October 13, 2021, but that launch date does not describe the current release or the availability date of every later feature. Selenium Manager’s milestones came later, and the project continues to update WebDriver BiDi and other components. Confirm current versions and binding-specific requirements in official project documentation before upgrading; avoid treating every Selenium 4 capability as if it existed in 4.0.
