Tailwind CSS scans your project’s source for class names and generates a static CSS file containing the utilities it finds. You build interfaces by combining those utilities in markup, then use variants such as hover:, focus:, and responsive prefixes to apply styles conditionally. It is a build-time CSS workflow, not a runtime styling engine.
For a real project, choose the setup that fits its framework and build pipeline, confirm your Tailwind version, and use the documentation for that version. The instructions and browser requirements below distinguish the documented v4 behavior where it matters.
How do I install Tailwind CSS?
Tailwind’s official setup routes include Vite, PostCSS, the Tailwind CLI, and framework-specific guides. Start with the integration that matches the project rather than adding a separate build system by default. The framework guides point to framework-specific instructions; the Vite guide covers the Vite integration.
- Check the project’s Tailwind version. Confirm the installed package version in your package manifest or package manager output. Open documentation for that version before copying commands: setup details can differ between major versions.
- Choose the matching integration. Follow the official guide for Vite, PostCSS, the CLI, or your framework. Avoid layering in another integration unless the project actually uses it.
- Import Tailwind into the build. Use the import or stylesheet setup specified by the version-matched guide.
- Make sure the built stylesheet is loaded. The framework or app entry point must include the generated CSS for the page to receive Tailwind’s styles.
- Start the development build and inspect the result. Add a few utility classes to a page, then verify in the browser that the generated styles are present.
The Play CDN is convenient for experimenting directly in a browser, but Tailwind says it is intended for development, not production.

How do I use Tailwind CSS?
Think of a utility class as a small, named styling instruction. Classes for layout, spacing, typography, color, and other properties can be composed on the same element. Tailwind scans source files for class candidates and generates CSS for detected classes; the result is a static stylesheet rather than styles computed by a runtime engine. See Styling with utility classes and Detecting classes in source files.
For example, a card might combine layout, spacing, border, and text utilities on its elements. The class list describes the element’s styling in place, while a variant scopes a utility to a condition such as hover or focus. Utilities are not a ban on custom CSS: use custom styles where a component or design genuinely calls for them.
Keep class candidates detectable
Because Tailwind generates styles from class candidates it detects in source, ensure the relevant source files are included in the project’s detection setup. If a class is assembled dynamically in a way that never appears as a complete candidate in scanned source, its corresponding CSS may not be generated. Prefer complete class names in source or use the documented mechanism for making needed candidates available.
How do Tailwind variants work?
Variants apply a utility under a condition. State variants such as hover: and focus: respond to interaction; responsive variants scope styles by viewport width; group and other variants express relationships or conditions. Multiple variants can be stacked when a style should apply only when several conditions are true.

Use variants to keep a conditional style close to the utility it affects. For more complex or reusable behavior, consider whether a custom utility, variant, or regular CSS rule better communicates the intent. Tailwind documents state, media, group, and arbitrary variants in its utility-class guide.
How do Tailwind breakpoints work?
Tailwind’s responsive prefixes are mobile-first: unprefixed utilities define the base style, and a prefix such as md: applies from that breakpoint’s minimum width upward. Without an additional range condition, the style continues at larger widths too. The documented default breakpoints are:
| Prefix | Minimum width |
|---|---|
sm: |
40rem (640px) |
md: |
48rem (768px) |
lg: |
64rem (1024px) |
xl: |
80rem (1280px) |
2xl: |
96rem (1536px) |
These are the defaults in Tailwind’s responsive design documentation; a project can customize its theme. If a style should apply only over a bounded width range, use the documented range-limiting variants rather than assuming a minimum-width prefix stops at the next breakpoint.
How do I enable dark mode in Tailwind CSS?
By default, Tailwind’s dark: variant follows the system’s prefers-color-scheme setting. That is a good fit when the application should mirror the user’s operating-system preference without offering its own theme switch.

For an app-controlled theme, redefine the dark variant to use a class or data attribute, then have application code add or remove that selector. This separates the styling rule from the source of the user’s choice. Check the version-matched dark mode documentation for the current syntax; the current documentation surfaced for this guide identifies v4.3 on that page.
How should I customize Tailwind?
Use theme variables for values that belong to the project’s reusable design system, such as a recurring color or spacing choice. Use arbitrary values for genuine one-off exceptions, and add custom CSS, utilities, or variants when they express a pattern better than a long collection of ad hoc classes. Tailwind describes these extension paths in its theme variables and custom styles documentation.
- Repeated design value: give it a reusable theme token.
- One isolated exception: an arbitrary value may be appropriate.
- Repeated behavior or domain-specific pattern: consider a custom utility or variant.
- Styling that is clearer in ordinary CSS: keep it in custom CSS; Tailwind does not eliminate the need for it.
What should I check before using Tailwind v4?
Tailwind’s compatibility page states that the core requirements for v4.0 are Chrome 111, Safari 16.4, and Firefox 128. Those are version-specific browser floors, not a guarantee about every browser or every Tailwind release. Check your product’s supported browsers against the documentation for the exact installed version. The page also says v4 is not designed for Sass, Less, or Stylus. See Tailwind’s compatibility documentation.
If an existing project depends on one of those preprocessors, do not assume the v4 workflow is a drop-in fit. Review the project’s build architecture and the migration path for its exact version before changing integrations.

Troubleshooting common Tailwind problems
Classes appear in markup but have no effect
- Confirm that the generated stylesheet is imported and loaded by the page.
- Check that the source file containing the class is included in Tailwind’s detection setup.
- Ensure the class is present as a complete detectable candidate rather than only being assembled dynamically at runtime.
- Verify that the utility and syntax match the installed Tailwind version.
Responsive styles do not activate when expected
- Remember that a responsive prefix applies from its minimum width upward, not only at that breakpoint.
- Compare the viewport width with the documented threshold and check whether the project customized its theme breakpoints.
- Use a range-limiting variant if the style should stop applying above a particular width.
Dark mode does not follow the app’s toggle
The default dark: behavior follows system preference. If the product has its own toggle, configure the variant for the application’s class or data-attribute selector and ensure application code updates that selector.
The setup conflicts with the existing build
Recheck that you followed the guide for the framework and build integration the project actually uses. For v4, account for the documented lack of design for Sass, Less, and Stylus workflows instead of assuming those preprocessors are supported.
