Run JavaScript synchronously with execute_script
Call execute_script() on a Selenium WebDriver instance. The JavaScript runs in the current browsing context, and the value from its return statement is returned to Python.

Use a return statement when you need a result. Without one, the script can still perform an action, but there is no value from that statement to assign in Python.

Pass values safely as script arguments
Provide elements and ordinary Python values after the script string. In JavaScript, access them through arguments[0], arguments[1], and so on. This avoids assembling variable or untrusted values into the JavaScript source itself.

Choose synchronous or asynchronous execution

Use asynchronous execution only when the JavaScript operation itself completes later. A Python-side wait or a page-load timeout is not a substitute for signaling completion from the injected script.
Wait for asynchronous JavaScript to finish
With execute_async_script(), Selenium appends a callback as the script’s last argument. Call it when the browser-side operation is finished. Set a script timeout appropriate to the expected duration; this timeout controls asynchronous script execution, not page loading.

print(result)In this example, Python receives "done" when the callback runs. If the script never calls the callback before the configured timeout, Selenium raises an error. The Selenium API documents both script arguments and set_script_timeout(): Python WebDriver API.
Run the script in the intended window or frame
JavaScript executes in the currently selected window and frame. If the target page is inside an iframe, switch into that frame before executing; switch back to the top-level document when finished. If a script appears to address the wrong document, first confirm which window and frame WebDriver has selected.

Browser same-origin and other cross-domain policies can also restrict access between documents. Selenium’s JavascriptExecutor API describes the execution context and notes cross-domain policies as a possible cause of script failures.

JavaScript can change page state or trigger behavior without following the same interaction path as a person clicking or typing. When the purpose is to verify user-facing behavior, prefer Selenium’s ordinary element interactions where practical; use script execution when the test specifically needs browser-side JavaScript behavior or a value that is otherwise difficult to retrieve.

Troubleshoot common execution problems
- No value reaches Python: Add a JavaScript
returnfor synchronous execution, or call the completion callback for asynchronous execution. - The script targets the wrong page or document: Check the active window and frame, then switch to the intended browsing context.
- An asynchronous call times out: Ensure every completion path calls the injected callback and set
set_script_timeout()to a suitable duration. - The script fails around an iframe or another origin: Confirm the selected frame and consider browser cross-domain restrictions; a script cannot necessarily access another document across origin boundaries.
- A value changes the script’s meaning or causes a syntax error: Pass dynamic data as arguments and reference it through
arguments[n]rather than interpolating it into the JavaScript string. - The JavaScript itself fails: Check the snippet’s syntax and inspect the browser console for page-side errors that clarify the failure.
